Celebrate Small's 20 Year Anniversary this Weekend

A lot of bars have come and gone in Hamtramck over the years, but through it all, there has always been one staple. Small's has sit at the corner of Caniff and Conant since 1999. A few years after opening its doors, the bar was taken over by Mike & Natalie Mouyianis along with Melody & Dave Malosh. That's when Small's became the bar that we all love and know today. Over the years, this bar has become the home to the Detroit music scene. There's a reason that bands hold their release shows here, their tour kickoffs, and their homecomings. It doesn't matter what the genre is, metal, punk, indie. If you're in a band, you know that if you have a show at Small's it's going to be awesome.

This weekend Small's is celebrating their 20th Anniversary! To commemorate this monumental event, the bar will be hosting two nights of fun, with something appealing for all of their customers. First up, on Friday night they will be hosting an awesome rock show featuring the reunion of Grande Nationals. This is the first time that this band has played since 2013, and we are super excited to see them back on the stage. Joining them for the night are The Strains, The Black List, and The Detroit Dives. Tickets for the show are $15 and 21+ are welcome.

Then, on Saturday night, Small's will be hosting a special 20th Anniversary edition of Thirst Wave and Industrial Is Not Dead. For those that don't know, these two events are dance parties that rotate at Small's weekly. On some special occasions, the two team up for the ultimate night of dancing. This time around, Resident DJs Pleasure Kitten, Elektrosonik and Aaron Hingst will be joined by special guests DJ Jon Noble, DJ Raev and DJ Greg Gnyp. You can expect to hear Dark '80s and '90s Retro Alternative, Post-Punk, Industrial, Goth, Coldwave tunes throughout the night. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free for 21+ until 10 p.m. and $5 after. 18-20 cost $5 all night. There will also be giveaways, drink specials, and free snacks throughout the night!

So whether you make it to Small's on Friday, Saturday, or both, make sure you stop by and wish the crew a happy 20th! Thanks for giving all of us in the Detroit music scene a home for so many years!

Vans Gives Back To Detroit

When I was younger, people used to argue about which brand made the coolest kicks. Some kids wore Chucks, some wore Docs, but if you were really hip, you wore Vans. From the second The Suicide Machines started singing about them, they were all that I wanted to wear and somehow a million years later they are still my go-to brand. I usually wear a leopard print pair, but have a few limited edition gems that I like to bust out when I get the chance because my love for Vans goes even deeper than shoes or music.

Over the last year, Vans has been sinking some serious money into Detroit's art, music, skate culture, and youth. They started by popping up and giving out gear at least year's Murals in the Market and took it to the next level with the House of Vans takeover of an old high school that celebrated art, music, and skateboarding. This week, Vans stepped it up and made an even deeper commitment to the arts and music of Detroit. They visited 5 different schools and donated $10,000 to their music and arts programs. They also gave out shoes, backpacks, reusable bottles, and other gear to keep the kids looking fresh. Music and Arts programs are the first things to be cut when schools are struggling, but for many of us, they are the only place where we get to be creative and express ourselves. Vans want to make sure that Detroit's kids get the chance to experience how meaningful creativity can be.  To support Vans community efforts and to learn more about why they give back click here.

Tunde Olaniran and The Mosaic Youth Theatre is Bringing The Concept of The Third Paradise to Life

Have you ever heard of the Third Paradise? This concept was created by an Italian artist named
Michelangelo Pistoletto to symbolize the reconciliation of the world that we have created with the natural world that was here long before technology tainted it. To represent this, the artist revised the infinity symbol and gave us a new way to look at the idea of infinity and continuation. He wants to convey the idea that “together we make the world a paradise”. His art and his theories are thought-provoking and inspiring. Two words that I would also use to describe Tunde Olaniran.

Flint-based artist Tunde is teaming up with the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit to bring a performance of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Il Terzo Paradiso (The Third Paradise) to life this Friday, September 27 at 7 p.m. They will be activating Detroit's historic Fisher Building's atrium for a one-hour recreation that will bring this work to life. The details of this event are very limited, but we know that if Tunde is involved it will not only be magical, but most likely it will be unlike anything else we have ever seen before.

This performance is being sponsored by The Cranbrook Museum and Art Gallery and it is free to attend. This is a one time only chance to see art come to life while seeing some of Michigan's best performers in a whole new light.

Eastern Market Comes Alive After Dark this Thursday - 2019 Murals in the Market

Murals in the Market has been in full swing ever since last Saturday, but things are just getting started. Thirty One artists have been working extra hard all week long to get their pieces done before Thursday'nights Eastern Market After Dark mural unveiling party. This annual celebration in the streets has become an end of Summer staple that has helped put Detroit and its artists back on the national radar. Each creator is given a space and the materials to make a piece of the market come alive. Then, we get the chance to walk through the streets to see all the new art while music, food, booze, and life happens all around us.

This year's artists lineup includes local and national names like Ijania Cortez, Kevin Lyons, Ron English, Tiff Massey, Jason Abraham Smith, and Efe Bes. You can check out all of the artists and read their bios here. You can see a map of where all of their pieces are located here. There will also be tons of food trucks and places to eat during EMAD, this includes great local spots like Cairo Coffee, Mitten Crate, Supino Pizzeria and Gather. You can see a full list of all of the places you can eat here. There will also be a lot of local retailers that will be staying open late for the event. This includes DetroitWick, SMPLFDWell Done Goods and more. You can see the full list of local shops here. Finally, all of the local galleries will also be open during the event, so make sure that you pop in to see what they have. You can see the full list of their locations here.
There will be a few follow up events in the market after the party this Thursday. You can keep up with those here. You can also head down to the Market anytime you want to take a walk and see the art. We suggest making a nice little Saturday out of it and visiting the oldest market in the US while you are at it!

It's Time to Check Out Coup D'état

Fast fashion is over and big-name massed produced items are a dime a dozen. It's time for all of us to start seeking out well made, long-lasting quality pieces that will make us look good season after season and there is a new store coming to Detroit where you can do just that.

Coup D'état is a new curated collection of clothing, makeup, and lifestyle items that Angela Wisniewski, a.k.a. Hello Angela, has brought together. Her goal is to create a collection of responsibly made products that you cannot get anywhere else in Michigan. This includes NOTO, MAKE Beauty, Year of Ours, Apparis, Hassbeens, and more. You can see some of the things that she carries and purchase some of her stock online here. You can also check out Coup at their next pop-up in November, but the big announcement from Coup is still to come. She has hinted that she will be opening a space in the city before the end of the year, but the details haven't been released. If you would like to stay hip and find out when the grand opening is going to happen you can sign up for their newsletter here.

We attended the last pop-up that she hosted at Lost and Found Vintage and left with the best pair of faux leather leggings we have ever felt from a brand called Commando. They weren't cheap but they are one of the most quality pieces of clothing that we have ever purchased. We look forward to seeing more of what Coup has to offer but we cant wait to wear these leggings over and over again!

The SheTown Film Festival Returns to Detroit this Weekend

A lot of people complain that the world isn't the way that they want it to be, other's find ways to create the spaces that they want to exist. Mike Madigan and Amanda Looney are two veteran filmmakers that didn't like the way that women were being represented and celebrated in the film industry, so they created their own film festival to make sure that women got their chance to shine. The Detroit SheTown Film Festival was born in 2018 to celebrate female filmmakers and it was well-received, even selling out a few of its inaugural events. This inspired the co-creators to bring the festival back to Detroit for the second year, but being the innovators that they are, they have added even more to make the second year bigger and better in every way.

The 2019 SheTown Film Festival received entries from hundreds of filmmakers from 25 different countries. The panel watched every film and curated a weekend of movie watching that they think everyone will enjoy. They have separated the films into a few different categories and curated a few parties and events to make the weekend extra special. This includes a free mixer this Thursday, September 12 and a comedy block on Saturday, September 14th that Mandy says you will not want to miss. You can see a full lineup of events and purchase tickets here. Each showing is only $10 and a weekend pass to get into everything is only $70, which means that this festival is VERY affordable. If you like films, want to make films, already make films, or just want to do something different this weekend, check out the Detroit SheTown Film Festival and celebrate all of the cool things that women have done with film.

Win Tickets to Michiganders Album Release Party at The Crofoot

Jason Singer has been performing for live audiences since 2011. In 2014 he took on the name Michigander and in 2016 he released his first EP called Midland. He spent the next two years touring and perfecting his sound and stage show before stepping back to write, record and prepare to release his latest EP, Where Do We Go From Here, on C3 Records on September 13th, 2019. He will be celebrating that release in Pontiac at The Crofoot alongside Bad Bad Hats, Rival Summers, and Kimball. This show will kick off a four-week tour across the US and if the first single is a sign of what's to come, this may be the start of something bigger then ever for the mid-Michigan signer/songwriter.

Tickets to attend the Friday the 13th release party are $13 in advance and all ages are welcome to attend. We also have a pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of Hip in Detroit sponsor The Crofoot. If you would like to enter to win them, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #michigander. We will draw one lucky winner on the morning of the show and they will get to attend the event with a friend for free.

Win Tickets to See Big Business at Deluxx Fluxx

This Friday night, Party Store Productions will bring Big Business to the stage at Deluxx Fluxx. The duo just released a new full length earlier this year, called The Beast You Are. After releasing the album, they hit the road with Sleep, but sadly that tour didn't make its way to Detroit. But now you have a chance to see them this Friday night along with MEAT WAVE from Chicago and Detroit's own Teener.

Tickets to see these three great bands live are $13 in advance or $15 at the door. You can purchase your tickets in advance here. Thanks to our friends at Party Store Productions and Deluxx Fluxx, you can also enter to win a pair of tickets to this show. To enter to win, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #bigbusiness in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and will send them details on how to claim their prize.

Doors are set to open at 7 p.m. on Friday and 21+ are welcome.
