Hamtramck Music Fest 2020 - Podcast & Guide

The Hamtramck Music Fest will take over the City of Hamtramck for the 7th year in a row, during the weekend of February 27-29. This year, the fest will showcase 189 acts at 23 venues throughout the city. There are some new venues on the list this time around, like Bar/Ter, The Film Lab, Port, and even St. Florian Church is getting in on the fun. The church will feature keyboard musicians playing music on the pipe organ at St. Florian, with performances by TradeMark Psalm, Yorg Kerasiotis, and Luis Resto. Another thing that is different for this year's fest is that the kick off on Thursday night will take place at 2 different venues. This time around, it will be at The High Dive and Bar/Ter. (Ant Hall will be hosting Hedwig this weekend, so they won't be taking part in the event. But, that's an amazing show too!)

One thing that hasn't changed about HMF is that it is the best deal around. Once again this year, wristbands for the entire weekend are only $15. They can be purchased online here or at the following locations:
Dearborn Music, Detroit Record Club, Detroit Threads, Dr. Disc (Windsor), Cafe 1923, Encore Records, Flipside Records, Found Sound, Hello Records, Melodies & Memories, Nosh Pit, Paramita Sound, Peoples Records, Rat Queen Vintage, Record Graveyard, Rock City Music, Smalls, Solo Records, Stormy Records, Street Corner Music, Third Wave Music, UHF Records, Underground Vinyl, Weirdsville Records
Once again this year, proceeds from the event will go to the Hamtramck Public Schools’ Music and Art programs. In years past, these funds have provided things like instruments for the marching band, and a new state-of-the-art mixing board and stage microphones for the High School auditorium.

To get ready for this year's HMF, we sat down with a few bands playing and chatted about the event. Our guests on this episode include Sean Donnelly - The Doozers, Jack Mullen - Kimball, Chris Jarvis - Ancient Language, Noah De Leon - Leland Blue, and James Linck. Click play below to give that podcast a listen, and then hit play below that to listen to tunes from all of these artists. (Special thanks to Ghost Light for letting us record this podcast in their space!)

If you would like to see any of these acts during this year's HMF, they will be playing at the following times:
Ancient Language - Friday at 11 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
James Linck - Friday at 11:30 PM @ The Painted Lady
Leland Blue - Saturday at 9 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
The Doozers - Saturday at 10 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
Kimball - Saturday at 11 PM @ New Dodge Lounge

Check out all of the other bands that are playing HMF on the schedule below. And make sure to keep that map handy so you can get to all of the venues! Remember, there will be free shuttles running between the venues, so take advantage of that service and make it to as many of these shows as you can!

Win Tickets to Michiganders Album Release Party at The Crofoot

Jason Singer has been performing for live audiences since 2011. In 2014 he took on the name Michigander and in 2016 he released his first EP called Midland. He spent the next two years touring and perfecting his sound and stage show before stepping back to write, record and prepare to release his latest EP, Where Do We Go From Here, on C3 Records on September 13th, 2019. He will be celebrating that release in Pontiac at The Crofoot alongside Bad Bad Hats, Rival Summers, and Kimball. This show will kick off a four-week tour across the US and if the first single is a sign of what's to come, this may be the start of something bigger then ever for the mid-Michigan signer/songwriter.

Tickets to attend the Friday the 13th release party are $13 in advance and all ages are welcome to attend. We also have a pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of Hip in Detroit sponsor The Crofoot. If you would like to enter to win them, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #michigander. We will draw one lucky winner on the morning of the show and they will get to attend the event with a friend for free.

Has it been a while since you saw a solid lineup of good local music? It's easy to get stuck in a rut and stay home, but every once in a while you need to make sure that you are still getting out and seeing what is hip and new on the local music scene. But, we know that your time and your money can be limited. So instead of hitting up a few different shows this week save yourself some time and just come out to see a truly solid lineup at The Loving Touch this Saturday.

Kimball, Handgrenades, Legume, and Chuck will all be performing together this Saturday, August 3rd. All four bands are worth checking out on their own, but thankfully they have come together so that you can see them all at the same time.

Tickets to attend Saturday's show are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. You can purchase fee-free tickets at The WAB (located next door to the Loving Touch) or you can enter to win a pair of tickets to the show.  To enter, please email your full name with the subject line #ineedlivemusic to hipindetroit@gmail.com. Nice Place Presents: An Evening In Bloom

Poster made by Benjamin Astro
It's no secret that there a ton of great venues in Detroit. But, despite the number of awesome places to hold a show, there is always something special about a house show. The setting is more intimate, it's more of a party, and it feels more like a secret that only select people are in on. Well, this weekend there is a house show coming up that in fact only a certain number of special people will get into.

The house is called the Nice Place and it's in the Boston Edison District, so you can bet on the fact that it is indeed a nice place. This Friday, April 5th they will host a great list of bands and there will also be art on display from local artists. The lineup for the evening includes KimballPrimerOdmiana and Seaholm. Art will be on display from PlanetSkullZoe LaskBenjamin AstroEthan Sublett-Quevedo and Juliaak. Cover for this show is only $5, but only a limited number of people will be admitted into the show. To save your spot at the Nice Place, contact them on Instagram here. Only those that are confirmed through Instagram will be allowed in to the show. You can also guarantee a spot at the show if you win a pair of guest list spots from us.  If you would like to secure your spot and get into this show with a friend for free, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #nice in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and will send them details on how to claim their prize.

Doors for this show are set to open at 7 p.m. on Friday. Cover is cash only, so make sure you bring that $5! The Nice Place is located at 70 Glynn Court in Detroit. For more info on this show, click here.

Hip in Detroit's 2019 Hamtramck Music Fest Preview

This weekend, the City of Hamtramck will be taken over by some of the best bands in the area for Hamtramck Music Fest. The three day festival will feature 209 acts at 24 different bars and venues throughout the city. It all kicks off on Thursday night, at Ant Hall and Ghost Light where Sextez & the Vybe, DUDE, Cosmic Light Shapes, Sold Only as Curio, Kind of Animal, Valid, Ladyship Warship, After Dark Amusement Park, and Panda House will play. Then, on Friday and Saturday night, the fest spreads throughout the city to pretty much every bar in the area.

We had a chance to meet up with some of the bands playing this year's HMF this past week at Small's. Hit play below to hear some music from HMF artists and to hear us chat with Melody from Betty Cooper as well as co-owner of Small's, Andrew from Handgrenades, Adam from Tart and Patrick Davy & The Ghosts, Jack from Kimball, and Ricky from Citizen Smile and Patrick Davy & The Ghosts, as well as cohort of James Linck and Ben Keeler. Plus our good friend Lee chimes in from time to time too! Make sure you listen to the second segment of the podcast, where Melody not only gave us details on HMF, but also details on Small's Paczki Day Celebration, with music all day and their famous Paczki Bombs!

Wristbands for Hamtramck Music Fest are only $15, which grants you access to all of the participating venues, all 3 days. Wristbands can be purchased with cash at Ant Hall on Thursday night, the HMF Headquarters on Friday & Saturday night, or at most record stores in the Metro Detroit area. For a full list of where you can purchase your wristband, click here.

With so many bands and so many venues, the best way to make the most of Hamtramck Music Fest is to come up with a plan, but make sure you check out some bands that you haven't seen yet. Don't forget, there are free shuttles throughout the night taking you between all 24 venues too! So don't worry about driving from place to place. If you want to get from one side of town to the other, just hop on the shuttle! (Check out the map of all of the venues and the shuttle here.) We've been hearing a lot about this band over the past couple of years, and after seeing them play at Fusion Shows' Birthday party last month, we had to learn more about them. Give the podcast a listen below, then head over and give Kimball's latest EP North Wilson a listen here.

Huge shout out to The WAB for letting us use their new ALEchemy Room to record the podcast! Learn more about this new space at the WAB here.

Celebrate 11 Years of Solid Shows with Fusion Shows this Saturday

In 2008, a new president named Barack Obama was elected to office, Britney Spears had a full out meltdown and shaved her head, the writers strike had Hollywood by the balls, and a few people who loved music launched a new company called Fusion Shows. 11 years later, those same people are gathering together to celebrate over a decade of good times and growth with a killer lineup at The Crofoot in Pontiac this Saturday, January 12th.

Fusion Shows will celebrate their steel anniversary with a lineup of bands that includes Foxing, Shortly, Japanese Breakfast, Olivia Millerschin, Kimball, and many more. Bands will begin performing inside the Ballroom, The Pike Room and The Vernors Room at 6:30 p.m. sharp this Saturday. Doors are at 6 p.m. and some of the night's do not miss acts will be off the stage before 8 p.m. So this is the kind of event that you get to early! Tickets to attend are $23 in advance, $25 at the door.

If you want to know about the history of Fusion Shows check out a podcast that we did a year ago with Nate from Fusion Shows.

Don't Miss Three Days of Great Music and Fun at the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival

Every Labor Day Weekend, Joseph Campau is taken over by vendors, beer stands, a carnival, and some of the best music that Detroit has to offer. The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival always hosts some of the best bands around, playing two different stages, but this year, the fest may have outdone itself. This weekend if you head to Hamtramck, you have a chance to see acts like Stef Chura, The Muggs, Craig Brown Band, and Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. Those are just some of the headlining acts playing this year's fest. Some other highlights include The Octopus, Ancient Language, Mugen Hoso (from Japan), Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor, and Kimball. Actually, the whole lineup is pretty awesome from start to finish, you can check it out below.
In addition to great music, there will also be a carnival daily, great food for sale, the Polish Day Parade, and of course, the Hamtramck Yacht Club Canoe Races. For those that aren't familiar with the yacht races, representatives of different bars throughout Hamtramck will compete against each other in a race, with pushcarts that look like canoes. The race is always a blast and takes place on Monday at Noon.

Cover to the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival is free. There is also free street parking available throughout town, and if you ride your bike to the festival, Wheelhouse Detroit will have a free bike valet. We promise you, this festival is always a great time! Make sure you stop by one day or even all three days this weekend!

Kimball Releases New Music and Plays The Loving Touch

It's no secret that there are a lot of great bands in Detroit, but every once and a while we cross paths with a band that we are absolutely wowed by. Kimball is one of those bands. They just released their debut EP North Wilson last week, and we've listened to it straight through quite a few times now. Probably more times than we should admit. Kimball classifies themselves as Indie Rock, but we would definitely include Alternative Rock in that description. Although the band has only been playing together for about two years now, their sound far exceeds what you would expect to hear based on that time period. They have a sound that you would hear on airwaves on college campuses across the country, and we're sure it won't be too long before that's a reality. They were already featured on WDET's Modern Music with John Moshier recently. You can give that a listen here. You can also give Kimball's new EP a listen below.

North Wilson has already been released digitally, but this Friday night Kimball will also be releasing the EP on CD as well as a new 7" at their release show at The Loving Touch. The record is being released by none other than Detroit's own Jett Plastic Recordings and will be available on limited edition colored vinyl. Check Out Kimball with The Doozers and Patty Hype

We've been hearing a lot about Kimball over the last couple of months. They are five piece band from the Royal Oak area that our friends have been raving about. The band describes their sound as a "laid back feel similar to Bon Iver and Alt-J with the upbeat energy of Hippo Campus". Give their debut release Guns a listen below to decide for yourself. Keep an eye out for new music from Kimball this spring too!

If you want to check Kimball out live, head to The Loving Touch this Friday night! They will be opening up for The Doozers and Patty Hype. Cover for this show is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. You can also enter to win a pair of tickets to the show by sending your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #LT in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get in the door with a friend for free that night.

This is a great chance to see some bands you may not have heard of yet! Check out songs from The Doozers and Patty Hype, then make your way to The Loving Touch this Friday night!
