Coup D'état Reopens: Detroit's Hub for Curated Style and Unique Finds

All Photos from Coup Coup D'état

Exciting news for Detroit shoppers and art enthusiasts: Coup D'état has officially reopened! Known for its finely curated selection of fashion, accessories, and unique finds, this Detroit gem is back and better than ever. We recently had the pleasure of stopping by during a special pop-up event hosted by artist Kelly Golden. Golden was on-site creating custom ornaments for the holiday season, adding an extra layer of magic to an already delightful shopping experience.

The pop-up was a perfect opportunity to explore the beautifully designed space and get a taste of what Coup D'état has to offer. Of course, we couldn’t resist picking up a custom ornament (or two) to add a personal touch to our holiday decor. While we were there, we also fell in love with a stunning necklace—and had our eyes on a gorgeous coat and dress that we’ll definitely be coming back for. Sometimes, you just have to space out your treasures!

This reopening feels like the start of something special, as Coup D'état plans to host more cool pop-ups and events in the future. Whether you're looking for a one-of-a-kind piece to elevate your wardrobe or a unique gift for someone special, this is the place to be. The space itself is a work of art, providing an inspiring backdrop for discovering hidden treasures.

If you’re planning your holiday shopping or simply want to treat yourself, make sure to stop by Coup D'état. With its expertly curated selection and the promise of future events, it’s a destination you won’t want to miss. Who knows what kind of treasure you’ll find next?

Explore The Shepherd: Detroit’s New Cultural Hub in East Village

Detroit’s East Village is being revitalized in a big way, thanks to Library Street Collective co-founders Anthony & JJ Curis. At the center of this transformation is The Shepherd, a 110-year-old Romanesque-style church that’s now an exciting cultural arts center. Once known as Good Shepherd, the church closed in 2016, but it has been beautifully reimagined to host art exhibitions, public projects, performances, and more.

Architectural design firm Peterson Rich Office (PRO) has preserved the church’s original beauty while creating new spaces like galleries, classrooms, and a public library. The church’s main gallery also includes a mezzanine for programming, and the former altar has been converted into a unique space for performances. Outside, over 3.5 acres of new public green space, designed by OSD, are now open for everyone to enjoy.

But The Shepherd is more than just a beautiful building—it’s part of a larger plan to make Little Village a cultural hotspot in Detroit. The Curises have teamed up with local artists, neighbors, and the City of Detroit to turn this area into a vibrant arts district.

One of the highlights inside The Shepherd is the Little Village Library, curated by Asmaa Walton, founder of the Black Art Library. The library is a public space dedicated to artists of color, focusing on those with deep ties to Michigan. For an extra cozy touch, the church’s old confessionals have even been transformed into reading nooks!

The first major exhibition at The Shepherd was "Charles McGee: Time is Now", a collaboration with MOCAD. Running from May 18 to July 20, 2024, the exhibition showcases the incredible work of the late Charles McGee, an artist who celebrated the beauty and resilience of Detroit and its people. Right next door, the Charles McGee Legacy Park features large sculptures and space for visitors to relax and explore.

There’s more to check out nearby, too! BridgeHouse will be a culinary destination, with a new pâtisserie from James Beard Award-winning chef Warda Bouguettaya. Plus, you can stay at ALEO, a boutique bed & breakfast that highlights work from 30 Detroit-based artists, making it a perfect retreat for art lovers.

For something totally unique, don’t miss the skatepark at The Shepherd, created in partnership with Tony Hawk and McArthur Binion. It’s a blend of art and action, giving skateboarders a one-of-a-kind space to ride.

Plan Your Visit:

Address: 1265 Parkview Street, Detroit, MI 48214

Hours: Wednesday-Saturday, 11 AM - 5 PM

Whether you’re coming for the art, the park, the skatepark, or the food, The Shepherd is a must-visit destination in Detroit’s East Village. Make sure to stop by and experience this new cultural hub for yourself!

It's Time to Check Out Coup D'état

Fast fashion is over and big-name massed produced items are a dime a dozen. It's time for all of us to start seeking out well made, long-lasting quality pieces that will make us look good season after season and there is a new store coming to Detroit where you can do just that.

Coup D'état is a new curated collection of clothing, makeup, and lifestyle items that Angela Wisniewski, a.k.a. Hello Angela, has brought together. Her goal is to create a collection of responsibly made products that you cannot get anywhere else in Michigan. This includes NOTO, MAKE Beauty, Year of Ours, Apparis, Hassbeens, and more. You can see some of the things that she carries and purchase some of her stock online here. You can also check out Coup at their next pop-up in November, but the big announcement from Coup is still to come. She has hinted that she will be opening a space in the city before the end of the year, but the details haven't been released. If you would like to stay hip and find out when the grand opening is going to happen you can sign up for their newsletter here.

We attended the last pop-up that she hosted at Lost and Found Vintage and left with the best pair of faux leather leggings we have ever felt from a brand called Commando. They weren't cheap but they are one of the most quality pieces of clothing that we have ever purchased. We look forward to seeing more of what Coup has to offer but we cant wait to wear these leggings over and over again!
