Check out Laura Finlay's Latest Gallery in Ferndale

The Ferndale Library is not your average library and Laura Finlay is not your average artist. So we're not surprised that they teamed up for her next show opening this Thursday, August 3rd.

The Ferndale Library hosts all sorts of amazing events throughout the year. They have weekly events for the kids and lots of special pop up events to celebrate the art and culture of Metro Detroit. They also have a really cool plant room in their building that you have to check out sometime. They have even become a music venue during DIY and other big Ferndale sponsored events. A lot of their events are free and they are always interesting. To keep up on what they are up to, you can follow them on Facebook or visit their website here.
Laura Finlay has shown her work all over town, including one of our favorite spots, The Red Bull House of Art. Her collages feature flowers and bright colors that immediately catch the eye. She is also a singer who performs with various musical acts around town, including the uber talented Audra Kubat. Laura oozes creativity and her galleries are always interesting.  You can follow her here to keep up with all of her adventures and you can come by the library this Thursday to check out what she does and congratulate her on another gallery opening.

The Ferndale Library is located on 9 Mile just east of Woodward. The opening party runs from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Pick Up Cheapshow's "The Things You'll Find When You Need Them The Most" from Dropping Bombs HC

Cheapshow is a band that we absolutely love. They make fun punk rock songs with super witty titles and lyrics. You can check out some of their tunes on their bandcamp here. Earlier this spring the band put out their latest release, a three song EP entitled The Things You'll Find When You Need Them The Most. This was the follow up to the band's full length that was released back in 2015, I Hope This Is A Sign That Things Are Going Well. Well, now this new EP will not only be available to you online, but it is also being released as a limited plexiglass lathe cut record on Dropping Bombs HC. Here's what Cheapshow's frontman Vince Troia had to say about this new release.
"I always feel weird when I try to describe anything about Cheapshow. Like, I think everything we do is a little bit better and more exciting than what we did before. But that's just my opinion. I mean, I'm sure when Davey Havoc and Jade Puget finished Blaqk Audio's CexCells they were like "this is the best album we've ever created. It's not like we wrote Black Sails In The Sunset or anything."

The Things You'll Find When You Need Them The Most isn't only our first follow up EP to I Hope This Is A Sign That Things A Going Well, but also a continuation of a story. I Hope's installment tells the story of how a relationship decays and then affect an individual, where this EP tells the story of when you meet the person that pulls you out of that post-breakup slump.

All of us at camp Cheapshow and Dropping Bombs are super stoked on this release, and we hope you are too!"
The new record is available for pre-order starting today and the physical copies will be shipped out in September. You can reserve your copy by heading over to the Dropping Bombs store here. To get a preview of what you will hear on that record once it comes in the mail, stream the EP via bandcamp below.

Win Tickets to the Piebald "You're Part Of It" Tour

Last summer Piebald announced that they would be reuniting, about 8 years after calling it quits. The Massachusetts based band got their start back in the mid '90s and and kept making and playing music together all the way up until they released their last album in 2007 and then broke up in 2008. They got back together to play a some festivals in 2010, but that reunion didn't last long. Well, last August Piebald announced that they were getting the band back together and hitting the road to play their songs that fans love so much. Unfortunately Detroit didn't get a stop on that tour, but now the band is back on the road and they're making a stop in Detroit for their "You're a Part of It" tour.

Piebald will be hitting the stage this Friday night at The Shelter. Joining them for the night are Michigan's own Baggage. Tickets for the show are $22.50 each or if you buy a 4 pack, they come out to $15 a piece. You can purchase your tickets in advance here. Haute to Death Goes on a Summer Tour

For the last ten years Haute to Death has been throwing the best dance parties in town. The only complaint that we ever had about one of their parties was how packed it would get. So, I was glad to hear that they are taking the show on the road and going  on a mystery summer tour this year, leading up to their 10 year anniversary party this October.

They announced the first of three dance parties that they will host over the summer at different venues. The first stop on their summer tour will take place this Saturday, July 29th at El Club. This venue features an indoor and outdoor space and one of the best sounds systems in town as well as a great full bar and a kitchen that cooks up some unique pizzas and snacks. It is the perfect place for Haute to Death to take over for the night!

Tickets to get into the event are $3 before midnight and $5 after the clock strikes twelve. Twenty one and over are welcome  to come out to play and the fun starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m.

Hip in Detroit Talks to Assemble Live at 6 PM this Sunday!

Poster Created by Monsterfree Design

Every month hipindetroit.com goes live on podcastdetroit.com for almost two hours to talk about all the hip things that are going on in and around the City of Detroit. The podcast, which is sponsored by M-1 Studios, is a chance for us to feature some of Detroit's biggest movers and shakers. We can go in depth with these guests and learn more about who they are and what they do. If you would like to check out some of our previous podcasts you can re-listen to any of our past shows anytime from any device here. Or, you can tune in live this Sunday, July 30th to hear us talk about one of the city's coolest collectives, Assemble Sound.

Assemble Sound is a music collective that was established inside the old black church next to the train station. It has been helping some of the best artists in Detroit come together to create new music and, if they're lucky, make a little money and maybe a career out of their passion. They recently received a grant that will keep them in business for the foreseeable future, which is a good thing for all of us because their roster includes artists like Flint Eastwood, Syblyng, Tunde Olaniran, James Linck, Passalacqua, Nigel, and many many more names that you have heard us mention over the years. Join us as we go in depth with the minds behind this creative force that has been pushing the Detroit musical community forward by bringing people together in a whole new way.

We have also invited our friends and sponsors The Messenger Birds in the studio to talk about their upcoming single release party at The Loving Touch on August 5th. They will be giving us all the details about the new single "Around the Sun" and will chat with us about some of the fun things they plan to do before the end of the summer.

You can tune in live on Sunday, July 30th at 6 p.m. by visiting podcastdetroit.com and clicking the link for studio 2. If you miss that live broadcast, we will be replaying that podcast and all of our other podcasts here!

Hip in Detroit Chats with The Ladies of Harlow

Two weeks ago Hip in Detroit had a chance to catch up with the ladies of Harlow in Ferndale right before they performed at The Loving Touch. The four piece hard rock band has recently had some lineup changes and is in the process of recording their first EP together with this lineup. They have a few shows coming up, including August 12 in Akron, Ohio, September 8th at The Loving Touch and September 14th at a Michno's Cafe in Redford.

Check out our afternoon chat at Port with Lauren (vocals) and Katelynn (drums) and mark your calendars to come out and see them live. We stuck around and watched them the night of this interview and were impressed with what they had to offer. Lauren can belt it out like no other, Joe slays on guitar and Kelly holds down the beat alongside Katelynn who owns the drums. If you like hard rock, keep your eyes and ears out for Harlow!

"12th and Clairmount" Makes its Television Debut on the 50th Anniversary of the '67 Riots

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 riots in Detroit. This monumental event shaped and changed the City of Detroit. Still, as important as the riots were to our history, many Detroiters and Metro Detroiters that didn't live through that time, don't know much about the events that took place.

This Sunday, July 23rd is exactly 50 years since the beginning of the '67 riots. They would then continue for five days, filled with fights, fires, and overall civil unrest. This Sunday you can recognize this important day in history and learn from it by sitting in front of your TV screen. WXYZ, Channel 7 will be hosting the television premiere of a documentary entitled 12th and Clairmount. The film debuted at this year's Freep Film Festival and tells the story of the events that happened back in the summer of '67 through the people that lived it. It features accounts from a variety of people mixed with photos and home movies from the time. The film has been shown several times at local theatres and film festivals throughout the year, with most of those screenings completely selling out. This is the first time that you can watch the film from the comfort of your own home and we encourage you to do so. This was a very important time in Detroit's history and we all should take the time to learn more about it and reflect on where we were as a City and where we are now.

12th and Clairmount will air this Sunday, July 23rd at 7 p.m. on WXYZ Channel 7. After the film, the news station will broadcast live from a town hall meeting where current Detroiters will talk about their city. For more information on the town hall or the television premiere of 12th and Clairmount, click here. For more information on the film itself, visit the Facebook page here.

Warped Tour Brings Some of Your Old Favorites to Town

Growing up, Warped Tour was always one of the highlights of the summer. It was your chance to see a bunch of your favorite bands in one place, discover some new bands, and get sun burnt with all of your friends. One of our favorite memories is going to Warped Tour at the Phoenix Center and swimming through the flooded parking lot after there was a downpour in the middle of the day. It’s something we would never do now-a-days, but we also don’t really go to Warped Tour now-a-days. Well, if you’re like us and you seem to think that you’ve outgrown going to Warped Tour, this year’s lineup might change your mind.

Vans Warped Tour 2017 is bringing out some of your favorite bands and making it feel like you’re a teenager again. This year’s lineup includes bands like Anti Flag, Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, The Ataris, Save Ferris, Silverstein, Big D & The Kids Table and even GWAR and The Suicide Machines. Some of the other highlights on this year’s lineup include Valient Thorr, BadCop/Bad Cop and Municipal Waste. You can check out the full lineup here. We guarantee there will be at least one band that takes you back to the good old days and one or two bands that you dig now too.

This year Warped Tour will once again take over the parking lot of The Palace for their Detroit date on Friday, July 21st. Tickets for the show are $40.50 plus fees and can be purchased in advance here. Gates are set to open early at 11 a.m. To stay in the loop the day of the show, make sure you head over and RSVP to the Facebook event here. There you will find out everything you need to know and you can even check out the Warped Tour app. It's all listed right on the Facebook event page.

Calling All Crafters! It's Time to Apply for the Detroit Urban Craft Fair!

The Detroit Urban Craft Fair is one of our favorite annual events. This yearly gathering of approximately 100 vendors is a finely curated event that features an array of different products in different price points and unlike other shows, you have to make something to be part of it. This craft fair does not allow anyone who sells vintage goods or chain items to participate. The ladies of Handmade Detroit work very hard to put together a truly unique experience and aren't afraid to switch up the booths from year to year. So if you have applied in the past and gotten turned down, there is no reason to believe that you won't make it into the show in the future.

The key to getting into this fair is showcasing your goods in the best possible light, using clear photos and descriptive explanations when you are filling out the paperwork. The more you can tell them about what are you planning to sell, the better! It is also important to remember that the designer must be at their booth throughout the weekend. The Detroit Urban Craft Fair is meant to be an interactive experience for the shoppers. So if you don't plan to be at your booth, don't bother to apply!

To apply for the show you must fill out this online application and send it in before September, 26th. It is smart to get it in as early as possible because there server gets overloaded on the last day and they do not under any circumstances accept late applications. So if you miss the deadline, you will have to wait for next years show! To learn more about Handmade Detroit and the Detroit Urban Craft fair visit their website here.

Get Hot to Death at The Haute to Death Pool Party Saturday (Ticket Giveaway)

Haute to Death hosts the best dance parties in Detroit. Their all inclusive parties are by far our favorite place to dance the night away once a month. During the summer months, they also throw a few old fashioned pool parties where you can dance your day away with a few beers in a bathing suit surrounded by a few hundred Detroiters. If you're lucky, you might even get your picture captured by the famous Haute to Death party camera.

The next pool party is scheduled for this Saturday, July 22ndTickets to attend the event are $15 in advance and they can be purchased here. There is also a summer pass that will get you into the next three parties, guaranteed. That can be purchased here for $40, which saves you a few bucks. Either way, you probably want to purchase your tickets in advance because space is super limited and once it is sold out, it is sold out. Every summer each party sells out faster than the last one, so don't get disappointed if you show up on Saturday and can't get your fabulous butt in the door!

If you want to "risk it" you can also take your chances and enter to win a pair of passes to attend the party courtesy of Hip in Detroit and Haute to Death. To enter to win please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject live #skinnydip. We will draw one lucky person this Friday and they will get to attend Saturday's party with a friend for free.

The pool opens at Noon so get your bikinis ready to go!

In 2016 a Columbian spoken word collective called Caldodecultivo was invited to Detroit by Idea City to participate in a residency at Pops Packing. The film will premiere at The DIA this Saturday, June 22nd and it will be followed up by a question and answer session with the artists to discuss their work. The Detroit Film Theatre is located at 5200 Woodward Ave.Detroit, Michigan 48202. This premiere is free to attend if you can get a ticket. The 1st Annual Detroit Festival of Books Comes to the Eastern Market this Sunday

A few years ago I received a Kindle over the holidays, I have always been a big reader and I was really excited about the gift. Downloading books was a lot cheaper and easier than buying paper copies and I loved the fact that you could carry around as many books as you wanted at any given time. But, despite all the perks that come along with reading an E-book, I found myself missing real books. I missed the weight of the book in my hands, the smell of the paper, the ability to bend the pages and the chance to take a book in the bathtub with me without the threat of electrocuting myself in the tub. I use my Kindle if I'm traveling, but other than that, if I want to read a book I make the drive to the store and I buy a hard copy.

Oddly enough, there are lots of people who feel the same way that I do, which is why The Detroit Book Club has come together to organize the 1st ever Festival of Books at the Eastern Market this Sunday, July 16th. The fest will feature food trucks, beer from Black Lotus Brewery, music from DJ Zig-Zag and tons of vendors selling new, rare and used books. There will also be a few vendors selling unique gifts, records, and more. The festival is free to attend and it runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Sunday. Jeff Milo did a great interview about the festival, you should check that out here and head out to the Eastern Market for the festival this Sunday!

Win Tickets to See The Thurston Moore Group at MOCAD

This weekend Party Store Productions, El Club, and The MOCAD have teamed up to bring Thurston Moore to the stage at The MOCAD.  After Sonic Youth called it quits in 2011 Moore began writing and recording his own music with an ever-changing group of musicians.  He has decided to hit the road and take his act on tour and he will be performing live in Detroit this Saturday, July 15th.  If you grew up loving alt rock as much as I did this is a rare chance to watch one of the greats.  It may not be as cool as seeing a Sonic Youth show (sorry, not sorry) but it's still an honor to watch Thurston in his element.

Tickets to attend the show are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show. We also have one pair of tickets to giveaway to the show courtesy of Party Store Productions. If you would like to enter to win a pair of tickets to the show please email hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #moore.  We will draw one lucky person this Saturday and they will get to attend the show to see this alt rock icon live and in person and one of Detroit coolest spaces.

Local Musicians Come Together to End Corruption

Lately it seems like there is very little that we can all agree on, especially when it comes to politics. After this last election it seems like we are more divided than ever, a lot of us have chosen teams and are having a hard time seeing eye to eye with the other side. But, even in today's heightened political climate there are some things that we can all come together and agree on.

One of those issues is political corruption. We can all agree that we want politicians that fight fare and represent the voices of the voters that put them into office, instead of the people who are willing to "donate" the most money to their political party. We can all agree that we want government officials that aren't included by big business, but instead are included by the needs of the people who live and work within their communities.

To show our solidarity with each other and their disgust with this system an amazing collection of Detroit artists will come together to play a FREE show this Saturday, July 8th and talk about what we can all do to make a difference. DUDE, The Dropout, Five Pound Snap and Citizen Smile will all be performing loud music at The Loving Touch this Saturday and Represent Us will be in house to talk about what you can do to make a change. This is one of those rare lineups where every band is solid and worth a watch, plus it's free to come out and show your solidarity! Doors open at 8 p.m. and The Dropout hits the stage at 8:45!
