Profs & Pints Goes Full Conspiracy this Month

Have you ever wondered how conspiracy theories start and spread? Would you like to learn how to distinguish justified suspicion from paranoid musings? The next Profs & Pints will dive into all these topics and ideas with Mark Huston, an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Schoolcraft College and Conspiracy Theory Scholar.

Professor Huston will "discuss some of the common theories about conspiracy theories and guide you through the debate between those scholars who regard conspiracy theories as fundamentally problematic and those who defend conspiracy theories as playing an important role in public life. You’ll learn about what the philosophy of science terms “the demarcation problem”—the task of distinguishing scientific theories from pseudo-scientific ones—and how drawing a line separating one from the other is more difficult than many realize."

Grab a pint from Ghost Light Bar and then sit back, relax, and learn something in the air-conditioned comfort of Ant Hall (attached). Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and $13 with a student ID. Planet ant Theatre is located at 2320 Caniff St, Hamtramck, MI 48212.

The Suicide Machines are Releasing a New Split with Coquettish!

Today, two ska-punk bands from two different sides of the world have teamed up to drop some new music. Detroit's own The Suicide Machines and Toyko's Coquettish have come together to release a new split titled Gebo Gomi. We had to do a little Googling, but it seems like the translation for that title is either Vomit Garbage or Throw Up Garage, which makes sense once you see the cool artwork for the record. Gebo Gomi is being released by Bad Time Records and is 9 songs total, 4 from TSM and 5 from Coquettish. This split was mixed by Jon Graber (NOFX, Goldfinger, We Are The Union). It goes on sale today and will officially be released on 7/29/2022.

The new tracks are heavy, angry, and somehow still catchy as hell. The Suicide Machines have always been able to capture the perfect amount of anger and joy, something that makes their songs and their energy special. Give The Suicide Machines' new single "Awake" from the split a listen below.

You can purchase your copy of the new split here. You can keep up with everything The Suicide machines are doing here, you can follow Coquettish here and you can follow Bad Times Records here.

Sofa Stories is Dropping a Series of Short Films and Raising Money for the Next Phase of Their Project

Last Summer, Sofa Stories brought a unique storytelling experience to Detroit. They "featured a selection of monologues that were performed by actors sitting on sofas to one audience member (or pair) at a time." The goal was to help attendees learn more about what they can do to help end youth homelessness and to raise money to help amplify these voices and the stories they have to tell.  The event was a huge success and they raised the money they needed to take this project to the next level.

"Now, the Sofa Stories team is launching a short film series featuring six original monologues featured in that project. The hope with these films is to reach new audiences and continue a larger conversation on how to help end youth homelessness in the city of Detroit." Part of continuing that conversation will be taking this project into its next phase." The next phase of the Sofa Stories project focuses on the stories of LGBTQ+ youth who have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity. This phase of the project will create paid opportunities for LGBTQ+ youth who have experienced homelessness, along with various opportunities for local artists committed to using their art form for social change. Young people will be matched with a Detroit-based writer to help craft an original monologue or performance piece, which will then be incorporated into live performances and films that will be presented in late 2022/early 2023.

To see these films and to help Sofa Stories reach its next goal you can come out to their film premiere at Spread Art this Saturday, June 18th. The night will feature a raffle with prizes from the Schvitz, Nora, Floyd, The Congregation, Detroit Opera, Detroit Public Theatre, and more. A $20 suggested donation is being asked, but you can donate more and you can still come if you need to donate less! The goal is to get the word out and to help Sofa Stories keep amplifying the voices that need it most with the thing we all need most...$.

Learn more about this event here.
