Say Goodbye to The Five Piece Problem and Hello to Lagerheads Tonight at The Ghost Light

This Friday night, The Ghost Light in Hamtramck has a great show lined up for you! They are bringing The Footlight District to town from Chicago, along with Detroit's own The Five Piece Problem, Party Days and Jackson & The Poolsharks.

This is actually a very special show for The Five Piece Problem because this will be the last show for the band as you know it. They are switching things up a bit, and with that comes a new band name. The new band is called Lagerheads. They actually already have a single out and they will be passing out sampler CDs at tonight's show. You can give the new song a listen below.

This should be a super fun show from start to finish! As a side note, we're pretty big fans of Jackson & The Poolsharks, so we highly suggest you get to this show early to check out all of the bands on the bill. Doors are set to open at 8 p.m. and admission is free, even more reason to go! The Ghost Light is located at 2314 Caniff in Hamtramck. For more info on this event, click here

This Friday the Scarab Club Celebrates 110 Years

The Scarab Club was formed in 1907 and it was first named the Hopkin Club after its founder, a marine painter named Robert Hopkin. Its purpose was "to promote the mutual acquaintance of art lovers and art workers; to stimulate and guide toward practical expression the artistic sense of the people of Detroit; to advance the knowledge and love of the fine arts in every possible manner; and to maintain a clubhouse for entertainment and social purposes as well as to provide working and exhibit facilities for artist members." It was renamed The Scarab Club in 1913 when a Detroit architect, named Lancelot Sukert, designed the current clubhouse at 217 Farnsworth. The club was featured in Life magazine in 1937 and a lot of important people have signed the building's ceiling beams in the lodge, this includes John Sloan, Diego Rivera, Pablo Davis, Marcel Duchamp, Norman Rockwell, and John Sinclair. The building is not only beautiful, it is full of art and history.

Over the last few years, Detroit has experienced a rebirth of art and a whole new community has formed within the city. The Scarab Club has embraced this change and hired a new director to curate a new art scene inside the club's walls. This Friday, the club will celebrate its 110th birthday by reflecting on where it all started, by celebrating the art of its founder Robert Hopkin. The night will feature music from the in-house band and a photo booth to capture a memory within the historic building walls. There will also be a strolling dinner and an open bar! Tickets to attend the celebration are only $40 a person ($35 for members) and the event takes place from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. this Friday, September 29th.

Eastern Market After Dark 2017

Eastern Market After Dark is returning to the Eastern Market this Thursday, September 28th. The one night only event gives attendees the opportunity to visit over 30 galleries that are within walking distance of each other. It also provides the opportunity to enjoy interactive experiences with a variety of Detroit's up and coming artists. Last year we watched leather couches being live painted and saw a fashion show featuring women walking in dresses that were made of various types of paper. Everywhere we turned there was something new and interesting to look at. It was a truly creative, fun and interactive look at the growing Detroit art scene.

This year's event will feature interactive installments inside Eastern Market sheds 2, 3, 4 and 5. Thirty of the city's local galleries are also open for the event. It is also the perfect chance for you to check out all of the new murals that were revealed during Murals in the Market last week. There will be a variety of food trucks to grab a bite during the event and there are bars to grab drinks. Some of the city's cool restaurants and distilleries are also open if you want to pop in while you're running around.

Eastern Market After Dark runs from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Thursday and it is free for all who are interested to attend, even kids! To learn more about Eastern Market After Dark you can follow this year's event on Facebook here.  Eastern Market After Dark is part of a five-day event put on by the Detroit Design Festival, you can learn more about this week's other events here.

You already know that DIY is in Ferndale this weekend, but did you know that there are two other cool events on the other side of Woodward Ave that you should hit up while you're in town? If you don't, we have two great things to tell you about!

The first event is called The Funky Ferndale Art Fair. The west side of Ferndale is shut down for a variety of vendors that sell an eclectic mix of mix of things, including painting, photography, jewelry and other handmade items and wares. Basically, it is more crafts and more art that you should be looking at while you're in town. Many of the businesses have also teamed up with the fair to run specials throughout the weekend. So if you have the time stop in some of the cool shops that are located in Ferndale and ask them if they are running any specials because a lot of them are! To learn more about this annual art fair click here.
The second event that you should check out is The Ferndale Vintage Fashion Market at The Rust Belt Market. Noir City Detroit brings Film Noir to the Redford Theatre

This weekend the Second Annual Noir City Detroit Film Festival will take place at the historic Redford Theatre in Detroit. The event will feature three nights of double features of classic noir films. For those that don't know, Film Noir is defined as, "a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder."

During this festival each evening will feature two films, one popular flick and one that you may not have heard of before. The lineup is as follows:
Friday, September 22Out of the Past and Nightfall
Saturday, September 23Gun Crazy and Try and Get Me!
Sunday, September 24The Asphalt Jungle and Cry Danger

Noir City Detroit will be hosted by Turner Classic Movies host Eddie Muller, who will also be doing a Q&A at the event. VIP tickets to attend all three nights of films as well as a meet and greet and the Q&A session with Muller are only $25! Single night tickets to see the double features are $10 a night. You can purchase either type of ticket in advance here.

The films are set to start at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. For VIP ticket holders, the meet and greet with Eddie Muller will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Hip Gets the Right Stuff from The Right Brothers!

This Sunday, September 24th Hip in Detroit will be sitting down for our next M-1 Studios sponsored podcast to talk all things Detroit with Andrew Miller, Al Casinelli and Jamin Townsley, better known as The Right Brothers. This indie video production company has filmed some of our favorite music videos for acts like Flint Eastwood, Passalaqua, Bevlove, James Linck, Jamician Queens, Tunde Olaniran and more. Lately, they have even branched out and started to make commercials for some of Detroit's coolest companies, including Brooklyn Outdoor, Detroit is the New Black and Third Wave Music. They even documented Nick Cave's recent residency in the city and did some work for High Times! If you know these guys you know that they are fun, friendly, and behind the rebirth of Detroit in so many ways. Plus, these dudes are at every show and event in town. It's easy to spot Andrew shooting stills at all of the shows and there is a good chance that Al might have brought the lights that you see on stage for the night to make it a real party.

These movers and shakers have been making magic happen all over Detroit and it's time to sit them down to talk about it. So, tune in live this Sunday at 6 p.m. to hear the Hip in Detroit,  M-1 Studios sponsored broadcast live on podcastdetroit.com. Make sure you follow us on Facebook or Instagram so you can see what studio we are in that night (it changes almost every month!). You can also listen to all of our past shows here

Win Tickets to See Big Boi at The Majestic Theatre

Outkast is one of the best hip-hop duos of all time. Their double album Speaker Boxxx and The Love Below is still one of my favorites. The duo has only performed together a handful of times since 2007, but they are still creating music out on their own. In fact, Big Boi just released his third solo album Boomiverse and is currently on tour in support of it.

This Friday night the New Dodge has a fun show lined up for you! They're bringing Electric Honey to the stage along with Eleanora and Hans Christopher.

Electric Honey is a Detroit based indie rock band featuring John Labut on bass and vocals, Patrick Minjeur on guitar and vocals, Matt Doppel on drums, Chris Righi on violin, and Evan Gatny on guitar. That's right, there's a violin in the band. You don't see that very often, but it's becoming more and more common to see instruments like this in rock bands again, and we kind of like it! To get a feel for Electric Honey's sound, listen to their latest single "The Science" below. The track is off of their upcoming new album Primetime Garbage.

If you like what you hear, make sure you make it down to New Dodge Friday night. Cover to see Electric Honey with Eleanora and Hans Christopher is $10. However, lucky for you, we're getting some people into this show for free. That means that $10 stays in your pocket and you can put it towards merch or drinks! INVSN Comes to El Club this Thursday Night

If you're a fan of Refused or The (International) Noise Conspiracy, you're probably familiar with the name Dennis Lyxzen. He's the amazing front man for both of those projects, and also for a band called INVSN. The five piece from Sweden also includes Sara Almgren of The (International) Noise Conspiracy, and members from another one of Lyxzen's projects, The Lost Patrol Band. INVSN's sound is somewhere between T(I)NC and Refused's latest album, with a bit of an eerie '80s vibe mixed in there. Check out the band's latest EP The Beautiful Stories to hear them for yourself.

INVSN is currently on tour and they're making their way to Detroit this week. They will be playing at El Club this Thursday night, September 14th. Joining them for the evening is Detroit's own Rogue Satellites. We're sure this will be an amazing show that you won't want to miss! Lyxzen is one of the most entertaining live performers we've ever seen. So, although we haven't seen INVSN yet, we're sure it will be one hell of a show! Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased in advance here.

Thanks to our friends at Party Store Productions and El Club, we are giving away a pair of tickets to this show! Proving the Future is Female

Last fall three new businesses opened at the corner of Bagley and Trumbull in Corktown. The first was The Bearded Lady, a hair salon and barber shop that specializes in good quality haircuts and beauty services at affordable prices in the heart of Corktown. The second shop was Mama Coo's, an upscale resale and vintage boutique that also carries one of a kind handmade pieces. The final shop to open was The Farmer's Hand, a locally focused artisanal grocery store, and cafe. All three businesses are independently owned, but they share a storefront and one really cool feature, they are all female owned!

These three groups of women are separately set out to do something on their own, but came together to turn a dirty old corner into a beautiful storefront in Corktown. This Sunday they are coming together to celebrate their 1st anniversary by hosting a birthday party that is open to the public. The event will feature free kids' haircuts, chair massages, a pinata, games and a DJ. They will also be celebrating Meta Physica massage, a fourth female-owned business that will be opening in the complex soon! Hatch Detroit winners Lady of the House will also be opening their location in the building across the street formerly known as St. Cece's, which means that this is becoming quite a little corner!

Sunday's party runs from 3-6 p.m, come out and have some fun and show your support for the ladies who make this city move!

Heat Up Your Life At The New Rouge Sauna

I have been trying lots of new ways to relax and recuperate. I work hard, I train hard, and I find myself needing a good way to center and relax more often than ever. We are all so plugged into the internet that sometimes finding an excuse to unplug, even for only an hour seems impossible. But, I have found that when I do my entire attitude changes and I finally get a restful night of sleep.

My latest stop in my quest to find new ways to chill out was a visit to the new Rouge Sauna room in Ferndale. The organic, vegan nail and makeup studio has been expanding its services over the last few years and they have added lots of great organic services like waxing, facials, and brow and lash tinting. They have also recently installed two saunas and created a one of a kind experience that you can't get anywhere else in the area.

If you have been to Rouge and purchased a service, you already know that you can expect the best. Their pedicures are out of this world, in fact, they are more of experience than a beauty service. They are long luxurious and involve lots of special extras like a hot stone massage when you splurge on the deluxe version of the service. Their intent is to help you truly relax and take care of yourself using animal-friendly organic products that are good for your outsides and your insides. So, I was not surprised that they embraced the practice of hot saunas and brought it to their beauty parlor.

Saunas have been used all over the world since the middle ages. They are a part of daily life in countries like Finland and Germany and have all sorts of proved health benefits, including flushing toxins, strengthening your immune system, aiding in a workout and muscle recovery, improving hair and skin, and strengthening your cardiovascular system. They are also mega relaxing and can help you melt away a day stress really quickly.
I walked into the salon a ball of stress and frustration and left just a little over an hour later glowing and smiling. The Rouge Sauna was of course over the top luxurious and exactly what my tired body needed last week. The private sauna that I used was preheated to 135 degrees. When I arrived I was given a ton of clean towels of varying sizes, a nice robe and a place to change and get comfortable. There was relaxing music playing throughout the space and the room smelled amazing form whatever candles or incense they were burning inside. I changed into my robe, poured myself a glass of water and learned how to control the light and the heat once I got into the sauna.  Then, I was left alone to pop in and out of the heat for the next hour. When I would get out to cool down I had a nice lounging chair to relax in and a few cold towels to put on my forehead. By going in and out of the heat and focusing on my breathing I was able to forget about all my troubles and open up my pores to give my skin a chance to really breathe. After my session, it took me a few minutes to come down from the high I got from being so warm and relaxed and calm for an hour.  I felt the benefits for the rest of the day and well into the next one.

The effects of one sauna session were immediate and lasting. I have been dreaming about booking my next visit and I cannot wait to book a session or two with a friend so we can relax and enjoy the sauna together. This would definitely be a great place to kick back with a small group of friends. Plus, its really affordable which means that there is no reason to not give this one a try to see if it works as well for you. A one-hour session is only $35 and a quick half hour "power" session is $20.  You can also add this service onto a facial for FREE through the end of September so there is even more of a reason to get in there and give it a try. My biggest fear for this place is that it is going to get so popular that I'm not going to be able to get in as much as I would like, but I guess that is a risk worth taking. This was one of the most beneficial self-care practices I have tried so far, especially when you consider the price. So, go ahead, treat yourself and book you session in the sauna at Rouge, you won't regret it!
