Check out The Funky Ferndale Art Fair and The Vintage Market While You're at DIY this Weekend

You already know that DIY is in Ferndale this weekend, but did you know that there are two other cool events on the other side of Woodward Ave that you should hit up while you're in town? If you don't, we have two great things to tell you about!

The first event is called The Funky Ferndale Art Fair. The west side of Ferndale is shut down for a variety of vendors that sell an eclectic mix of mix of things, including painting, photography, jewelry and other handmade items and wares. Basically, it is more crafts and more art that you should be looking at while you're in town. Many of the businesses have also teamed up with the fair to run specials throughout the weekend. So if you have the time stop in some of the cool shops that are located in Ferndale and ask them if they are running any specials because a lot of them are! To learn more about this annual art fair click here.
The second event that you should check out is The Ferndale Vintage Fashion Market at The Rust Belt Market. The pop-up market will feature a wide collection of vintage goods (mostly clothing) from a ton of different vendors, you can see a full list of companies that are in the show here. The market runs from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Don't forget, you can grab a drink at Revel Bar inside the market and say hi to our friends over at Mitten Crate while you're checking out the vintage fashion show.

Noir City Detroit brings Film Noir to the Redford Theatre

This weekend the Second Annual Noir City Detroit Film Festival will take place at the historic Redford Theatre in Detroit. The event will feature three nights of double features of classic noir films. For those that don't know, Film Noir is defined as, "a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder."

During this festival each evening will feature two films, one popular flick and one that you may not have heard of before. The lineup is as follows:
Friday, September 22Out of the Past and Nightfall
Saturday, September 23Gun Crazy and Try and Get Me!
Sunday, September 24The Asphalt Jungle and Cry Danger

Noir City Detroit will be hosted by Turner Classic Movies host Eddie Muller, who will also be doing a Q&A at the event. VIP tickets to attend all three nights of films as well as a meet and greet and the Q&A session with Muller are only $25! Single night tickets to see the double features are $10 a night. You can purchase either type of ticket in advance here.

The films are set to start at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. For VIP ticket holders, the meet and greet with Eddie Muller will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. For more info on Noir City Detroit, head over to the Facebook event page here. For more info on the Redford Theatre and other upcoming events at the theatre, head over to RedfordTheatre.com.

Photo from Murals In The Market - Mural by Hebru Brantley

This Friday the 3rd Annual Murals In The Market kicks off in Detroit. This is the event that has transformed Eastern Market over the past couple of years, bringing artists to town to create amazing works of art that now adorn buildings throughout the market and the city. The event is put on by 1xRun and Inner State Gallery. Over the past years they have brought over 100 artists to the city to create murals. This year they are bringing another 50 to town. The artists come from all around the globe and some are even from right here in the Detroit area. They will reside in the city for 8 days while working on their art, with the event beginning on September 21st and running through September 28th. During that time they will complete giant works of art that Detroiters and visitors will be able to enjoy for years to come. To see a full list of this year's artists, click here.

Throughout the entire week there are several events being held in conjunction with Murals In The Market. Plus you can just head down and watch the artists work throughout the week! For a full list of events, head over to Murals In The Market's Facebook page here. Hip Gets the Right Stuff from The Right Brothers!

This Sunday, September 24th Hip in Detroit will be sitting down for our next M-1 Studios sponsored podcast to talk all things Detroit with Andrew Miller, Al Casinelli and Jamin Townsley, better known as The Right Brothers. This indie video production company has filmed some of our favorite music videos for acts like Flint Eastwood, Passalaqua, Bevlove, James Linck, Jamician Queens, Tunde Olaniran and more. Lately, they have even branched out and started to make commercials for some of Detroit's coolest companies, including Brooklyn Outdoor, Detroit is the New Black and Third Wave Music. They even documented Nick Cave's recent residency in the city and did some work for High Times! If you know these guys you know that they are fun, friendly, and behind the rebirth of Detroit in so many ways. Plus, these dudes are at every show and event in town. It's easy to spot Andrew shooting stills at all of the shows and there is a good chance that Al might have brought the lights that you see on stage for the night to make it a real party.

These movers and shakers have been making magic happen all over Detroit and it's time to sit them down to talk about it. So, tune in live this Sunday at 6 p.m. to hear the Hip in Detroit,  M-1 Studios sponsored broadcast live on podcastdetroit.com. Make sure you follow us on Facebook or Instagram so you can see what studio we are in that night (it changes almost every month!). You can also listen to all of our past shows here

Win Tickets to See Big Boi at The Majestic Theatre

Outkast is one of the best hip-hop duos of all time. Their double album Speaker Boxxx and The Love Below is still one of my favorites. The duo has only performed together a handful of times since 2007, but they are still creating music out on their own. In fact, Big Boi just released his third solo album Boomiverse and is currently on tour in support of it.

He will be making a stop at The Majestic Theatre to play this Wednesday, September 20th. He will be performing tracks from the new album as well as stuff from his earlier days. INVSN Comes to El Club this Thursday Night

If you're a fan of Refused or The (International) Noise Conspiracy, you're probably familiar with the name Dennis Lyxzen. He's the amazing front man for both of those projects, and also for a band called INVSN. The five piece from Sweden also includes Sara Almgren of The (International) Noise Conspiracy, and members from another one of Lyxzen's projects, The Lost Patrol Band. INVSN's sound is somewhere between T(I)NC and Refused's latest album, with a bit of an eerie '80s vibe mixed in there. Check out the band's latest EP The Beautiful Stories to hear them for yourself.

INVSN is currently on tour and they're making their way to Detroit this week. They will be playing at El Club this Thursday night, September 14th. Joining them for the evening is Detroit's own Rogue Satellites. We're sure this will be an amazing show that you won't want to miss! Lyxzen is one of the most entertaining live performers we've ever seen. So, although we haven't seen INVSN yet, we're sure it will be one hell of a show! Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased in advance here.

Thanks to our friends at Party Store Productions and El Club, we are giving away a pair of tickets to this show! Proving the Future is Female

Last fall three new businesses opened at the corner of Bagley and Trumbull in Corktown. The first was The Bearded Lady, a hair salon and barber shop that specializes in good quality haircuts and beauty services at affordable prices in the heart of Corktown. The second shop was Mama Coo's, an upscale resale and vintage boutique that also carries one of a kind handmade pieces. The final shop to open was The Farmer's Hand, a locally focused artisanal grocery store, and cafe. All three businesses are independently owned, but they share a storefront and one really cool feature, they are all female owned!

These three groups of women are separately set out to do something on their own, but came together to turn a dirty old corner into a beautiful storefront in Corktown. This Sunday they are coming together to celebrate their 1st anniversary by hosting a birthday party that is open to the public. The event will feature free kids' haircuts, chair massages, a pinata, games and a DJ. They will also be celebrating Meta Physica massage, a fourth female-owned business that will be opening in the complex soon! Hatch Detroit winners Lady of the House will also be opening their location in the building across the street formerly known as St. Cece's, which means that this is becoming quite a little corner!

Sunday's party runs from 3-6 p.m, come out and have some fun and show your support for the ladies who make this city move!

Heat Up Your Life At The New Rouge Sauna

I have been trying lots of new ways to relax and recuperate. I work hard, I train hard, and I find myself needing a good way to center and relax more often than ever. We are all so plugged into the internet that sometimes finding an excuse to unplug, even for only an hour seems impossible. But, I have found that when I do my entire attitude changes and I finally get a restful night of sleep.

My latest stop in my quest to find new ways to chill out was a visit to the new Rouge Sauna room in Ferndale. The organic, vegan nail and makeup studio has been expanding its services over the last few years and they have added lots of great organic services like waxing, facials, and brow and lash tinting. They have also recently installed two saunas and created a one of a kind experience that you can't get anywhere else in the area.

If you have been to Rouge and purchased a service, you already know that you can expect the best. Their pedicures are out of this world, in fact, they are more of experience than a beauty service. They are long luxurious and involve lots of special extras like a hot stone massage when you splurge on the deluxe version of the service. Their intent is to help you truly relax and take care of yourself using animal-friendly organic products that are good for your outsides and your insides. So, I was not surprised that they embraced the practice of hot saunas and brought it to their beauty parlor.

Saunas have been used all over the world since the middle ages. They are a part of daily life in countries like Finland and Germany and have all sorts of proved health benefits, including flushing toxins, strengthening your immune system, aiding in a workout and muscle recovery, improving hair and skin, and strengthening your cardiovascular system. They are also mega relaxing and can help you melt away a day stress really quickly.
I walked into the salon a ball of stress and frustration and left just a little over an hour later glowing and smiling. The Rouge Sauna was of course over the top luxurious and exactly what my tired body needed last week. The private sauna that I used was preheated to 135 degrees. When I arrived I was given a ton of clean towels of varying sizes, a nice robe and a place to change and get comfortable. There was relaxing music playing throughout the space and the room smelled amazing form whatever candles or incense they were burning inside. I changed into my robe, poured myself a glass of water and learned how to control the light and the heat once I got into the sauna.  Then, I was left alone to pop in and out of the heat for the next hour. When I would get out to cool down I had a nice lounging chair to relax in and a few cold towels to put on my forehead. By going in and out of the heat and focusing on my breathing I was able to forget about all my troubles and open up my pores to give my skin a chance to really breathe. After my session, it took me a few minutes to come down from the high I got from being so warm and relaxed and calm for an hour.  I felt the benefits for the rest of the day and well into the next one.

The effects of one sauna session were immediate and lasting. I have been dreaming about booking my next visit and I cannot wait to book a session or two with a friend so we can relax and enjoy the sauna together. This would definitely be a great place to kick back with a small group of friends. Plus, its really affordable which means that there is no reason to not give this one a try to see if it works as well for you. A one-hour session is only $35 and a quick half hour "power" session is $20.  You can also add this service onto a facial for FREE through the end of September so there is even more of a reason to get in there and give it a try. My biggest fear for this place is that it is going to get so popular that I'm not going to be able to get in as much as I would like, but I guess that is a risk worth taking. This was one of the most beneficial self-care practices I have tried so far, especially when you consider the price. So, go ahead, treat yourself and book you session in the sauna at Rouge, you won't regret it!

ZMC Pharmacy: The Coolest Little Store You Don't Know About Yet

Have you ever stopped into ZMC Pharmacy in Royal Oak Michigan? A friend recommended that I stop in around two years ago and I didn't listen. I wish I would have because when I finally stopped by last week I was pleasantly surprised.

ZMC pharmacy is located on main street just south of downtown Royal Oak. The old fashioned drug store is anything but old school. Yes, you can get your prescriptions filled there, but they also carry a full line of health and beauty products that range from basic staples to boutique organic lines of facial creams and makeup. They also carry an amazing selection of greeting cards and tons of unique gifts for the home. This includes baby gifts like blankets and stuffed animals, home decor like vases, plants, candle holders, wall hangings and a variety of candles, mugs, and other small gifts. They also have a huge line of male facial, skin care, and shaving products.

I spent over an hour walking through the store and I felt like I barely saw half of what they had to offer. I also found myself trying to purchase every item in the store, but I decided to keep it reasonable and bought myself a coffee mug and a charcoal facial scrub sponge during my first visit. I cannot wait to go back and get some new facial products to try. I also can't wait to take advantage of their unique gift selection the next time that I need to pick up something for one of my hard to shop for friends or family members. They literally have something for everyone and their prices were shockingly reasonable. To top it all off, they are a family owned pharmacy, which I didn't realize even existed anymore. I can't wait o get my prescriptions transferred over so I can experience what it's like to "know" your pharmacist.

You HAVE TO STOP BY the next time you are in the area or when you need your next prescription filled, you will not be disappointed. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 till 5 Saturday and they are closed on Sundays! ZMC pharmacy is located at 1041 S. Main St. Fl 1 in Royal Oak, Michigan.

POP + Offworld Bring and Arcade to Downtown Detroit

We found your new favorite bar in Detroit! We know, that's a pretty bold statement, but we mean it. POP and Offworld Arcade have joined forces to open up shop above Checker Bar downtown. The bar features pizza, drinks, and Offworld Arcade's specialty, old school arcade games.
We had a chance to get a sneak peak of the new space before it officially opens up to the public this Friday. When you first go up the stairs, you notice the amazing decor, featuring a mural and bar top painted by the amazingly talented Michelle Tanguay. There are lights strung across the ceiling, huge open windows overlooking the city, and some booths and community tables, in addition to bar seating. There's also a small stage, and on this particular night we were entertained by a DJ from Hello Records. In addition to the great ambiance is the feature that makes this place stand out above others, the arcade. The game area hosts some of your favorite games from when you were a kid, ranging from Ms. Pacman to Mortal Kombat and even Paperboy. There are even some pinball machines on site too!

In addition to being a great place to hang out and play some games, this POP + Offworld combo also makes some great pizza! They offer a wide variety of choices either by the slice or as a whole pie. There are a lot of vegetarian and vegan options in addition to their own twist on classics like pepperoni and meat lovers. We tried The Gringo and the Caper Crusader and both were awesome! Neither of us are vegetarians, but these meatless options were super tasty and out of the ordinary.

If you want to check POP + Offworld out for yourself, their grand opening celebration is this Friday, September 8th from 5 p.m. 'til 2 a.m. The night will feature music from Hello Records DJs and Phaserland, a Bell's tap takeover and a classic console raffle. If you can't make it out this Friday, don't worry. They will be open 7 days a week from here on out. You can find POP + Offworld on the second level of 124 Cadillac Square, above Checker Bar.

We Tried Floating and You Should Too!

Isolation tanks, or float therapy as it is now called, is the latest trend in self-care. It involves being placed inside a silent dark pod that is warmed to body temperature and filled with water that has a high concentration of Epsom Salt. "Floaters" go into a small pod like chamber that blocks light, smell, and sound. The one-hour treatment boasts such benefits as relieving stress, boosting mood, normalizing metabolism, reducing anxiety and depression, reducing insomnia and stimulating creativity. Some people even claim that it can help with addiction. There has been a lot of debate over the benefits or this new therapy, so I decided to reach out to a local float therapy company to give this a try for myself.

I visited True REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique) Float Spa in Farmington Hills and talked to Jeff, the owner of the business. He explained the benefits of floating and encouraged me to come by and try it a few times before I decided how I felt about it. Then, he played a video for me to explain how this was going to work. The short film explained some tips and tricks for floating and then an employee took me back to my room.

The small room was warm and dimly lit. In the middle of the room was a large white pod filled with salt water. Next to the pod was a small shower, a little bench with towels, ear plugs, Vaseline and some instructions. I took a shower to rinse myself off, put in the ear plugs and used the Vaseline to protect a cut that I had on my knee. Then, I got into the pod.

It was warm and welcoming. There was music playing in the background and a dim light to help me find my way around. I laid into the water, relaxed and instantly felt myself floating. Once I knew I was safe, I closed the top, turned off the light and waited for the music to stop so I could relax.

Unfortunately, I did everything but relax. I obsessed over where I was going to put my hands and if I was doing it right. Before I knew it the music was back on and I had completely missed my chance to kick back and enjoy. I was disappointed, but noted that my muscles and normal aches and pains felt a little bit better and I slept like a baby when I went to sleep that night. I chalked the first time up to beginners folly and promised I would do "better" the next time.

The second time I floated I came prepared. I found out that I could ask for a swim cap to protect my blonde mop and went in with no expectations. I tried  to clear my mind as I showered and I got right in to the pod, got into a comfortable position and began focusing on my breathing. Before I knew it, an hour had gone by, I had zoned out and I "woke up" from my float feeling relaxed and invigorated at the same time. Once I stopped worrying about doing it right, I found out that I was able to do it right!

The third time was a repeat of the second time, I relxed myself even faster and felt even better after my float. I have a lot of aches and pains from working out hard 5 to 6 days a week and this helped relieve the pain from those ailments for a few days after the float. I would honestly say that floating is worth trying for this benefit alone. I was super skeptical of this whole thing before I got in the pod, but the second I felt the tension leave my ankles for the first time in months, I was more than intrigued. I am not sure if you can "trip out" in the chamber like some people claim and I don't know if it will really help with depression or insomnia, but I definitely felt like I got some physical pain relief and some mental relaxation from being in the pod.

If you decide to try floating, I would encourage you to wear a swim cap to keep the salt off your hair, bring flip flops so your feet are safe, and make sure to bring a spray bottle and a small towl into the pod with you in case you get some salt on your face because it burns! And, if you don't enjoy it the first time, it's worth giving it a second try to see if you can make it work for you!
