Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: June 27th-29th

Friday, June 27th - Sunday, June 29th - PUG Fest III: PUG Fest returns to Downtown Ferndale this Friday through Sunday! Put on by the fine folks at The Pleasant Underground, the fest features over 70 bands playing venues like Orchid Theatre, The Loving Touch, Syndicate, New Way Bar, and more. Headliners include Sweet Pill, MACSEAL, Modern Color, and OSO OSO. Plus, there are a bunch of local favorites on the bill too, including Cult Therapy and The Warped Tourists, just to name a couple. Friday, June 27th - Norcos Y Horchata @ Outer Limits Lounge: Detroit's own Norcos Y Horchata are out on tour with Ultraman from St. Louis and this Friday night, the tour is making a stop at home! They will be hitting the stage at Outer Limits Lounge in Hamtramck along with The Lowcocks. Doors open at 9 PM, 18+ are welcome, and $10 will get you in the door. Saturday, June 28th - Starlings @ The Old Miami: You finally have a chance to see one of our favorite Detroit bands live this Saturday night! The Starlings have previously only hosted shows at a top secret location, but this Saturday night you have a chance to see them live on stage at The Old Miami! Joining them for the evening are The Hourlies and Slumlord Radio. It will only cost you $5 to see this amazing lineup, plus you'll get to hang out in one of the best backyards in Detroit! Hip in Detroit's Weekend Picks - October 4-6

Saturday, October 5th - The Hourlies Record Release Show @ The Loving Touch: The Hourlies have a new LP out and they're celebrating the release this Saturday at The Loving Touch! Live with Yourself or Die Trying is the first full-length for the band. Helping them celebrate are Velvet Snakes and Cherry Drop. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance here. Cover will be $15 at the door. All ages are welcome and doors open at 7 p.m. Can't make it to the show? Keep an eye on The Hourlies' Bandcamp to stream the new tunes once they drop. 

Saturday, October 5th & Sunday, October 6th - Detroit Harvestfest Food Truck Rally @ Dequindre Cut: Detroit Harvestfest Food Truck Rally returns to the Dequindre Cut this Saturday and Sunday! This event will feature over 50 food trucks scattered along the over 1.5 mile greenway between Eastern Market and the Riverfront. There will also be live music, trick-or-treating, a dog & cat costume contest, inflatables, and more. Tickets are $5 in advance and can be purchased here. Cover at the gate is $8, but kids under 3, seniors, and active/retired military get in free. The hours for the fest are 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. each day.


Saturday, October 5th - Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival: Art & Music will fill the streets of Hamtramck this Saturday for the 14th Annual Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival! There are over 3 dozen installations on the schedule, with everywhere from homes to businesses hosting artists. Check out the full list and map here. Times for the festival vary for each art installation, with some starting as early as 10 a.m. and some going as late as 9 p.m. Check out the full schedule here


Saturday, October 5th - The Idiot Kids and The Lucid Furs @ Outer Limits Lounge: This Saturday night, Psychotic Reaction from Oklahoma will be hitting the stage at Outer Limits Lounge. But, (in our opinion) even more importantly, The Idiot Kids and The Lucid Furs will be playing too! Cover to see these 3 great bands live is $15. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the music starts at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome.

Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: May 17-19, 2024

We already told you about the Backyard Art Fair. Here are some other fun things happening this weekend! 

Friday, May 17th & Saturday, May 18th - Detroit Women of Comedy Festival @ Planet Ant: This Friday night, women take over Planet Ant in Hamtramck for th annual Detroit Women of Comedy Festival! This event will bring together over 80 performer on two stages, plug will have workshops and more. Day passes are $35 a day or you can pick up a two day pass for $65. If there's only one or two things that you'd like to attend during the fest, individual event tickets are available for most things on the schedule, starting at just $10. Saturday, May 18th - Pink Spit and The Hourlies @ The Old Miami: This Saturday night, The Old Miami is the place to be if you want to hear some great music! The lineup for the night includes The Hourlies, Pink Spit, and Cherry Drop. $5 gets you in the door and 21+ are welcome. 


Friday, May 17th - Sunday, May 19th - Motor City Comic Con: Pick up some comic books and see some of your favorite celebrities this weekend at Motor City Comic Con! The event will take place at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi Friday through Sunday. Weekend passes for adults are $90, or you can pick up day passes at $35 for Friday, $45 for Saturday, and $40 for Sunday. Some of this year's celebrity guests include William Shatner, Helen Hunt, Dante Basco (AKA Rufio), Ernie Hudson, John Ratzenberger, and George Went. Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: February 16-18, 2024

 

Friday, February 16th & Saturday, February 17th - Shadow Show Release Weekend @ UFO Factory: Shadow Show has a new album out and they're celebrating this release this weekend! The trio will be taking over UFO Factory for two amazing nights of music. First up on Friday, they will be joined by Deadbeat Beat, Secondary Colors, and DJ John Krautner. Then on Saturday, Day Residue and Briggance round out the bill along with DJ Auntie Chanel. Tickets are $12 a night or $20 for both nights and can be purchased in advance here. Cover will be $15 at the door, if it doesn't sell out. 21+ are welcome and doors open at 8 p.m. each night. Listen to the new album Fantasy Now here



Friday, February 16th - The Reefermen Rock & Roll Circus @ The Magic Bag: Head to The Magic Bag this Friday night to see tributes to some of the most legendary bands in rock & roll! The Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, The Who, Jethro Tull, and more are all on the bill, performed by The Reefermen, The Hourlies, Corktown Popes, Tino G &  The Dumpster Machine, and Jill Jack. $20 gets you in, doors open at 7 p.m., and all ages are welcome. 


Saturday, February 17th - RAWR: A Celebration of MySpace @ Spread Art: Celebrate your first favorite social media platform this Saturday night at Spread Art! Carmel Liburdi has curated an awesome night of music and art celebrating MySpace. The lineup includes The Idiot Kids, Nina Sofia, Arianna, and Carmel herself. All of the bands will be doing a throwback song of their choice and there will also be photos and art from the MySpace era. All ages are welcomed to attend this one. Doors open at 7 p.m. and Nina kicks things off at 8. Cover is by donation on a sliding scale of $10-$20. MySpace era clothing is encouraged. 


Saturday, February 17th - Timmy's Organism @ Lager House: Timmy's Organism joins The Sleevens from Tennessee this Saturday night at The Lager House! Get ready for a night of great music as well as some strange and unusual things thrown in the mix. Wild Shape will kick things off. Doors open at 8 p.m., the music starts at 9, and cover is $15.


Friday, February 16th & Saturday, February 17th - Dirty Show: Speaking of strange & unusual, the Dirty Show takes over The Russell Industrial Center this weekend! The annual erotic art exhibition will feature burlesque, visual art, performance art, and everything in between. Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased here. The show goes from 7 p.m. - 2 a.m. each night and 21+ are welcome.

Hip In Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: October 27-29

We already told you about a ton of Halloween festivities happening all over town! Well, if you aren't really in the mood to celebrate Halloween, here are some other fun things going on around town! 

Friday, October 27th - The Hourlies, Jackson & The Poolsharks, The New Old @ The Lager House: Head to The Lager House for a great show this Friday night with Jackson & The Poolsharks, The Hourlies, and The New Old. Doors open at 8 p.m. and Jackson & The Poolsharks kicks things off at 9 p.m. $10 gets you in the door and all ages are welcome (18+ under must be accompanied by a parent).

Friday, October 27th - JMSN + Sam Austins @ Leland City Club: Two amazing Detroit artists will be playing a hometown show together this weekend! JMSN and Sam Austins will be performing live at Leland City Club along with Decliner and Hitech. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased here. Saturday, October 28th - Jerry Seinfield @ The Fox: The legendary Jerry Seinfield will be in Detroit this weekend! He will be performing live at the Fox Theatre this Saturday night. There are two shows, one at 7 p.m. and the other at 10 p.m. Surprisingly, tickets are still available and start at just $55! Get yours here.

Sunday, October 29th - LuchaBoom! @ The Crofoot: Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos this Sunday night at The Crofoot! LucaBoom! will feature lucha libre wrestling, food by Lucha Puerco, tequila, and a ton of fun. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased here. Hip In Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: April 21st - 23rd

We already told you about Detroit X Detroit! Here are some other fun things happening this weekend. 

Saturday, April 22nd - Record Store Day - This Saturday is Record Store Day and shops all around town will be packed. Most will have special Record Store Day releases and some will have giveaways, but there are two stores whose festivities stuck out to us. First up, Village Vinyl in Warren will be celebrating six years along with RSD. They will have free giveaways to the first 30 customers with purchase, additional giveaways & free snacks throughout the day, 20% OFF select items, 10% OFF everything else (excluding RSD exclusives and dollar bin). Plus head across the street with your receipt after you shop and get $1 off a beer at Kuhnhenn Brewery. Doors open at 8 a.m. Further over on the east side, Ripe Records in Grosse Pointe Park will be celebrating 5 years on this RSD. They will have a free pig roast with hot dogs & hamburgers too, plus live music. The lineup includes Eastside Still Alive, The Hourlies, and more. Saturday, April 22nd - Steve Harvey Oswald and The Lucid Furs @ Small's: This Saturday night, The Lucid Furs will hit the stage at Small's along with Steve Harvey Oswald, The Counter Elites, Angel of Mars, and The Wretched Sights. Cover to see these 5 great bands is only $5 for 21+ or $8 for 18+. All proceeds go to Passenger Recovery & the SIMS Foundation and there will also be an overdose rescue demonstration at 9 p.m. using Narcan. Doors open at 8 p.m. 

Sunday, April 23rd - Meat Wave @ Outer Limits Lounge: Don't spend your Sunday night dreading Monday morning. Instead, spend the night having fun at a show! Outer Limits is bringing Meat Wave to town from Chicago and Kal Marks from Boston, plus Detroit's own Big Life will be there too! Doors open at 8 p.m. and $10 gets you in. Sunday, April 23rd - Earth Day Clean Up @ Palmer Park: This Sunday is Earth Day and if you're looking to show the planet a little love, there are clean up events scheduled all around town. One that stuck out to us is the Earth Day Clean Up at Palmer Park. Join the People of Palmer Park from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. for a park wide cleanup. There will also be a guided walk at noon and a Aziza Fairy Forest Treasure & Trash Hunt for families. To sign up to help, click here

Friday, April 7th - Break Anchor @ The Garden Bowl: If you've seen Break Anchor play the Garden Bowl before, you know this show is going to be crazy! Break Anchor will be joined by Suburban Delinquents, Flamingo Nosebleed, and You Dirty Rat this Friday night. Cover is free and 21+ are welcome. Doors open at 7 p.m.


Saturday, April 8th - The Great Detroit History Easter Egg Hunt @ Historic Fort Wayne: If you think the kids are having all the fun this Easter, here's an event for you! Historic Fort Wayne is hosting an adult Easter Egg Hunt this weekend, with some history sprinkled in there too. Tour Historic Fort Wayne while you and your team search for eggs throughout the afternoon. Then meet up for a snack and find out who collected the most eggs. There are prizes for the first, second, and third place teams. The fun goes from 2-5 p.m. and tickets are $48. Get yours here



Friday, April 7th & Saturday, April 8th - Fixation @ Small's: This weekend, Small's is hosting Fixation, a weekend of dark music. This two day event will feature a dozen bands, with HEALTH headlining on Friday and ADULT. headlining on Saturday. DJs Kat Paled and Jon Noble spin between acts on Friday and DJs Elektrosonik and Aaron Hingst will do the same on Saturday. Tickets start at $37.50 and can be purchased here


Saturday, April 8th - The Hourlies @ Cadieux Cafe: This Saturday night Cadieux Cafe has a great night of music lined up with The Hourlies, Vellows, and Rob Zinck & The Collaborators. Cover is only $5 and the fun starts at 8:30 p.m. It's also Jarrett Koral's Birthday (The Hourlies, Jett Plastic), so make sure to wish him a happy birthday while you're there!

Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend - December 9-11

Friday, December 9th - Battlecross @ Token Lounge: Battlecross is going on hiatus and this Friday night is your last chance to see them play! The 7th Annual Battle Christmas will be taking over Token Lounge with Child Bite, Shit Life, and Nethergate. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. All ages are welcome with a parent or 18+ are welcome. Doors open at 7 p.m.


Friday, December 9th - Metal vs. Punk @ The Sanctuary: Friday night, check out 10 bands for just 10 bucks at The Sanctuary for Metal vs. Punk. The night will feature 2 stages, with 5 punk bands on one and 5 metal bands on the other. Check out the lineup here. All ages are welcome and doors open at 6 p.m.


Saturday, December 10th - Citizen Smile @ New Dodge Lounge: New Dodge Lounge has reopened under new ownership and they are having shows again! This Saturday night, they have a stellar lineup for you with Citizen Smile, The Hourlies, and Three Spoke Wheel. Cover is $7 at the door, doors open at 8 p.m. and the music starts at 9 p.m. Rumor has it that New Dodge also serves ice cream now too, so that's even more reason to go! 


Saturday, December 10th - Wreck the Halls @ Lager House: The fourth annual Wreck the Halls will be taking over the Lager House this Saturday night! Throw on your favorite holiday themed outfit and head out for a night of music with Pet Psychic, Sros Lords, Tigra, Dear Darkness, 3 The Hard Way, Fen Fen, and Brenda. You can also get some Christmas shopping done while you're there because Stumbleweed and Punx for Paws will be on site. Cover is $10 and the music starts at 7:15 p.m.


Sunday, December 11th - Holiday FRAMEmarket: Head to the big top outside Frame in Hazel Park this Sunday for a day of shopping local! Frame will be hosting their Second Sundays Under the Frame Big Top Hoilday FRAMEmarket this Sunday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. This week's lineup of vendors includes: Magnolia Mercantile, Valentine Vintage, Folk Detroit, Bon Bon Bon, Melanie Making, Niché Hitch, Twistful Thinking, Kat & Crew, Nobby Doll Draws, Janeys, Gentle Vibes Vintage, Kaivi Jewelry, Tarot Readings with AJ Williams, and Ice On Mars. Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: November 19 - 21

Friday, November 19th - Detroit Tree Lighting @ Campus Martius: The holiday season officially kicks off in Detroit Friday night with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event will take place from 5 p.m. - midnight and will feature live music, Olympic ice skaters, horse drawn carriage rides, Santa, and more. Admission is free and masks are encouraged. If you can't make it out, you can tune into WXYZ's coverage of the event on Channel 7 starting at 7 p.m.

Friday, November 19th - Light Up Beacon Park: Down the street, Beacon Park will also be getting in the holiday spirit with the Children's Tree Lighting. There will also be interactive lighting installations, food trucks, live entertainment and more. This event also kicks off at 5 p.m. and goes until 11 p.m. Admission is free. 

The Hourlies @ The Old Miami w/ Vazum and Rob Zinck & the Collaborators: The Old Miami is hosting a great show Saturday night with a mixture of genres. The lineup for the night includes The Hourlies, Vazum, and Rob Zink & the Collaborators. Cover is only $5 and 21+ are welcome. The music starts at 9 p.m.

Sunday, November 21st - Holiday Markets @ Eastern Market: Eastern Market is also kicking off the holiday season this weekend! Sunday, they will be hosting their first Holiday Market of the season. The Holiday Markets will be open every Sunday throughout the season and will feature makers and vendors selling great gifts, as well as décor and even some goodies to add to your spread. The Sunday Holiday Markets are open weekly from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. through December 19th.

Sunday, November 21st - HABIBI @ UFO Factory w/ Rough Patch and Dropper: We saw Detroit's new power duo Rough Patch for the first time a few weeks ago when they opened for The Suicide Machines at the Hallowhiskey Masquerade and we were instantly hooked! Their lyrics are honest, catchy, and whitty, and their music is angry while still fun. See them for yourself this Sunday when they open for Habibi at UFO Factory. 18+ are welcome and you must have proof of vaccination or a recent negative test. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here

Win Tickets to See Radkey at Small's

This Wednesday night, Small's will welcome Radkey back to their stage! The St. Joseph base trio is just kicked off their tour in Omaha, Nebraska over the weekend. For the Detroit date, they will be joined by The Hourlies and Electric Sand. To get a feel for Radkey and their live show, hit play on their music video for "Dark Black Makeup" below.
