Here's the Scoop on the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival is one of our favorite annual events! This three-day celebration brings out a really eclectic group of people, has a unique if not odd musical mix of bands, and has reasonable prices on food and drinks. It's also easy to park for free (you might have to walk a block or two, but still) and it's free to get in so you don't have to spend any money to hang out and hear the music if you are tight on cash.

This year's festival will feature food from local businesses and trucks, carnival rides for all ages, beer and alcohol booths, 2 stages for music and wrestling, and some cool local makers and non-profits will have tables at the event. The city of Hamtramck will also be hosting canoe races and a parade. Musical highlights include ADULT, Zilched, Double Winter, John Salvage and the New Twenty Saints, Shadow Show, Craig Brown Band, Dude, Norcos Y Horchata, and the LEGENDARY POLISH MUSLIMS.

The HLDF kicks off Saturday, September 3rd, and runs through Labor Day on September 5th, 2022. Music starts around 2 p.m. and ends around 10 p.m. each day.

For the full list of events visit their website here.

Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: August 26-28

Friday, August 26th - S.U.B. Release Show @ Outer Limits Lounge: It has been quite a while since we've heard from Some Uncoordinated Bastards, but they're back and they have some new tunes! They are celebrating the release of their new CD this Friday night at Outer Limits Lounge. Joining them are
Blank Tape Tax, the Lowcocks, and Lilly Livers. Cover is $10 and the music starts at 8 p.m.

Friday, August 26th - PJ's End of an Era Party #1: In case you haven't heard, PJ officially has sold the Lager House and it truly is an end of an era. Before he officially leaves the building, he's throwing a few parties (that we are sure will be epic) and the first one is this Friday night! The lineup for the End of an Era Party #1 includes The Zotz, The Firewalkers, The Chris Casello Trio, The Cheetahs, and Timmy's Organism. Cover is FREE and the fun starts at 7 p.m. Don't miss it!

Saturday, August 27th SW Fest: SW Fest returns to Southwest Detroit this Saturday! The fest will start out in the streets during the day, then moves inside The Senate Theater at night. The event will feature over 40 performers and 70 vendors. Admission is free. Head to 6424 Michigan Ave. between 2 p.m. - 11 p.m. to get in on the fun!

Saturday, August 27th - Clawson Fest: Sean Nasrey, Sean Dunlop, and their team have been hard at work planning the second annual Clawson Fest! This free, family fun event will feature live music, craft food, local artisans, and a kids zone. The bill includes The Bob Mervak Trio, Strange Heart, and Oak City Roots! It's all happening in the parking lot located at 43 S. Main St. in Downtown Clawson from 3-9 p.m. this Saturday.

Saturday, August 27th - Break Anchor @ Cadieux Cafe: Summer may be winding down, but there's still time to get in a few more outdoor shows! This Saturday night, Cadieux Cafe will be bringing Break Anchor to their outdoor stage along with The Mushmen and Killer Diller. Cover is $10 and the fun starts at 7 p.m.

Saturday, August 27th & Sunday, August 28th - Hazel Park Art Fair: Spend the afternoon in Green Acres Park in Hazel Park either Saturday or Sunday this weekend and shop with local artists while you listen to some live music. The Hazel Park Art Fair is one of the best art shows in town in our opinion, with a similar feel to DIY or DUCF, but on a smaller scale. The fair is free to attend and is from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday. For a full list of artists that will be in attendance and musicians that will be performing, click here

Learning is Fun, Especially When You Can Have a Pint While You Take in Some Knowledge

Over the last few weeks, the James Webb telescope has given all of us a whole new look at the universe. We have new insight into the creation of our universe,  black holes, and how galaxies merge. This has sparked a whole new interest in what or who is out there. Humans have been looking to the skies to answer some of our most pressing questions for centuries. But, to truly understand where we are today we need to understand the origins of the study of astronomy, starting with Galileo and the “The Dawn of Modern Astronomy”.

Profs and Pints has invited speaker Prof. Eric H. Ash, a historian of science from Wayne State University, to talk about the origins of astronomy during their latest lecture at Planet Ant on September 18, 2022. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Student tickets are only $13 a piece. Click here to learn  more about the event and to purchase tickets.

PJ is Officially Leaving his Lager House

PJ is officially stepping down as the patron saint of his Lager House in Corktown. After 15 years of live music, food, and fun he is saying goodbye to the special space that he helped curate and build during some of Detroit's hardest times. In honor of the end of an era, PJ is hosting some end-of-the-road shows to say thank you to the people who spent their nights with him in Corktown.

The first farewell show will take place on August 26, 2022. The night will feature free performances by The Vibrations, The Firewalkers, The Chris Casselo Trio, The Cheetahs, and Timmy's Organism. The music starts at 7 p.m.

The second farewell show will take place on August 28, 2022, and it will feature free performances by Melvin Davis: Detroit Soul Ambassador, and The Gabriel Brass Band

We are sad to see PJ go but so happy to have had so many amazing nights with him and in his space.
