Spend Valentines Day with Patti Smith

Let's be honest, most of us hate Valentine's Day. Some of us hate it because we are spending it alone and others hate it because there are so many expectations and it's so easy to disappoint. Usually, we would encourage you to avoid the night all together but this year there is something fun to do that doesn't require you to be part of a couple or even care about love!

The legendary Patti Smith is releasing her latest book Devotion on Wednesday, February 14th at the DIA's Detroit Film Theatre. This book promises readers an inside look at Smith's creative process and the Valentine's Day event offers fans a chance to get up close and personal with the author while picking up a copy of the book to take home and read. Patti will be speaking, but she will not be signing copies of the book after the chat.
Tickets to attend the event are $20 in advance and each ticket purchased includes a copy of the new book. Seating at the event is general admission and groups will be seated on a first come first serve basis. The event starts at 7 p.m. on the 14th and tickets will sell out in advance, so make sure that you scoop yours up soon.

Screw candy hearts and overbooked restaurants! Spend the "holiday" with Patti and live a life of no
regrets.

See "Generation Startup" this Weekend at the DIA

Have you ever had an amazing idea, but you were just too afraid to take a chance and make that idea a reality? We are lucky enough to live in a city that is coming back to life. It is full of opportunities and people taking chances. Generation Startup is a film about some of these people.

Created by Cynthia Wade and Cheryl Miller, this film tells the story of six recent college graduates that "put everything on the line to build startups in Detroit". Those six people are Brian Rudolph and Avery Hairston of Banza, Dextina Booker of Rock Ventures and Shinola, Labib Rahman from Mason, Kate Catlin at Detroit Labs, and Max Nussenbaum of Castle. You can learn more about them and their stories before you see the film by clicking here. The filmmakers followed these individuals for 17 months to show you their struggles, defeats and successes during their entrepreneurial endeavors.

This Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th you can see Generation Startup at the DIA. The film will be shown at 9:30 p.m. both nights in the Detroit Film Theatre. Tickets are $11 and can be purchased in advance here. Check out the trailer of the film for yourself below. Then head to the DIA this weekend and get ready to be inspired!

See Ten Oscar Nominated Films at the DIA

The Oscars are just over a week away and, if you're anything like me, you probably haven't seen half of the films that are nominated. Some of them you may not have seen yet because you have no interest, others because you simply can't justify dishing out $10-$15 per movie. Well, there are also some films that are nominated for Oscars that you can't just head to your neighborhood theater to see. One of the categories that you probably haven't seen one film from is the Short Films, but don't worry, the DIA has you covered.

All this weekend as well as on Wednesday and Thursday, February 18th and 19th, the DIA is showing all of the Academy Award Nominated Short Films. Within the Short Film category there are animated and live action films. The DIA will be showing the films from both categories, with a short intermission between the two subcategories. This year's Animated Short Film Nominees are The Bigger Picture, The Dam Keeper, Feast, Me & My Moulton, and A Single Life. The list of Live Action Short Film Nominees includes Aya, Boogaloo and Graham, Butter Lamp (La Lampe Au Beurre De Yak), Parvaneh, and The Phone Call. To read a description of each of these films, click here.

Admission to see all 10 films is only $8.50 or $6.50 for students, seniors and DIA members. You can purchase your tickets at the box office or online here. The entire run time for the evening (including intermission) is 3 and 1/2 hours. Showtimes for this week are Friday, Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sunday there are two showings, one at 1 p.m. and the other at 6 p.m.

The DIA Film Theatre is located at 5200 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. For more information on this event, click here.

Check Out the First Ever Freep Film Festival & Win Tickets to See "Packard: The Last Shift"

This Thursday kicks off the first ever Freep Film Festival in Detroit. This inaugural event is taking place at The Fillmore and the Detroit Film Theatre inside the DIA and runs from Thursday the 20th thru Sunday the 23rd. The festival will feature film talks, a tour of some of Detroit's theatres,  premieres and screenings of several documentaries about Detroit and Michigan. You can check out the full schedule of events below.

The first film being shown at the festival is Packard:The Last ShiftThe Packard plant in Detroit went up in
1903 and has been used for everything from making cars, to hosting some of the most legendary raves in the 90s. In 2008, director Brian Kaufman decided he needed to tell its story and in 2010 he began filming a documentary about its past. The film uses pictures and videos, past and present, to give viewers an inside look at the history of this space. Packard: The Last Shift will premiere this Thursday, March 20th at The Fillmore. This film takes an interesting look at the Packards decline over the last century and features narration by NPR’s Celeste Headlee

Tickets to this screening are $10 for general admission and $25 for VIP seating. They can be purchased through Ticketmaster here. We also have one set of tickets to give away to one of our lucky readers. To win these passes, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line "Packard". We will draw a winner the morning of the show and give them more information on how to claim their prize. This film promises to offer us an inside look at the downfall of a once great facility that was ahead of its time.
