Win Tickets to Thursday's SOLD OUT Shows at El Club

In the late '90s and early '00s, post-hardcore, emo, and pop punk bands dominated the music scene. It was a great time for music. Maybe that's because we were in our teens and early 20s, loving life and feeling all of the feels but, that music helped define us as people, and we're definitely not alone. There's a reason why so many of the bands from that era are still are making music, and why they are continuing to tour and sell out venues. Many of those bands are celebrating 20th anniversaries this year and Thursday is one of those bands.

This Friday and Saturday night, Thursday will hit the stage at El Club as part of their 20 Year Anniversary Tour. The band reunited a couple of years ago and have spent a lot of the last two years touring. They are getting ready to call it quits once again, but this time they are on better terms and are ready to go out right. They are currently out on tour playing their first two (two of their most popular) albums in full at smaller clubs than they would usually play. This Friday night, they will play Full Collapse for Detroit, and then on Saturday they will play War All The Time.

Tickets for both of these shows are unfortunately sold out. But, lucky for you, our friends at El Club have hooked us up with one pair of tickets to give away to each of these shows. To enter to win, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #thursdayfriday or #thursdaysaturday in the subject line, depending on which show you are entering for. We will draw one lucky winner for Friday night and one winner for Saturday night and they will each get in with a friend for free. We will draw our winners for both shows on Friday morning. Good luck!

Detroit Gets a Good Neighbor

Yesterday I had a meeting with a client in downtown proper so I decided to take a walk around the new Shinola Hotel to see the new Lip Bar location. I will be writing about my experience inside that space soon (gotta test that lipstick out for a few days first), but today I wanted to tell you about a shop that I stumbled upon when I was looking for The Lip Bar (it's in an alley if you get lost too), a cool casual boutique that is anything but ordinary.

Good Neighbor is a new clothing store located on the new shopping strip created by the Shinola Hotel. At first glance, it looks like any other upscale boutique that you might find in a modern city, but once you step inside, you instantly realize that you found something special. The first and most impactful thing that I noticed when I started perusing the racks was that this was the first mid to high-end boutique in the city that not only catered to men and women's fashion, they also catered to plus size babes like myself and all of their merchandise was either locally sourced and/or created by a company that practices mindful sourcing and ethical manufacturing. You might not know this but most boutiques don't bother to carry anything over a medium (size 6/8) so I'm used to just hitting up the accessories section, but Good Neighbor had LOTS OF OPTIONS for plus size ladies and gentlemen. Some of our favorite finds were their embroidered #detroit shirts that were created with the help of Not Sorry Apparel and a custom #goodneighbor candle that was created in conjunction with Detroit Wick Candle Company from the Eastern Market. I also am a huge fan of Goldeluxe Jewelry and they had lots of it. Most of their clothing ranges in between $35-$150 and their accessories span an even wider range. There is really a something for everyone in the space.

Good Neighbor has been in the city for just over three months and they are currently open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sundays. You can check out some of the store's merchandise online, but we suggest making the trip out there to see the space for yourself!

Daniel Arsham is Bringing the Beach to Detroit

Detroit's art scene will become a little more interesting this week when two separate art exhibits featuring the work of Daniel Arsham open in two separate galleries across town. The New York-based artist and co-creator of Snarkitecture has created two immersive experiences that will take you inside the mind of the artist.

First, Daniel will invite the public to go swimming with him at The Beach at noon this Friday. Daniel's beach is solid white and made out of over one million recyclable, antimicrobial plastic balls.  You can stand in the center of the island, go swimming through the "water", or relax on one of the beach chairs. This installation is meant to be seen, photographed, and interacted with. Attendees are encouraged to empty their pocket and required to take off their shoes (that means wear socks, freaks). It's FREE to take a look, but strollers, food, and children under 18 aren't welcome unless an adult is present to account for them. The installation will be located at 1001 Woodward Avenue and will run through April 14th. You can get all the information you need to visit here.
The second gallery will open at Cranbrook Art Museum this Friday at 6 pm. It will feature a collection of works that showcase "artifacts from the 20th century". These "artifacts" are handcrafted mineral and earth-based sculptures that imagine what our world will look like to people in the future. This gallery will kick off with a public lecture from the artist at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow at 8 p.m. The lecture and the opening are both FREE, you can find out everything you need to know about this gallery here

Street Beet is Stopping in the Burbs this Wednesday

Street Beet's vegan pop-ups are the hippest new thing to hit the food and beverage scene in Detroit. They are one night only experiences that are special in every way. Co-creators Megan and Nina have a unique approach to vegan "junk food" that makes plant-based eating not only seem easy, but accessible to everyone. Plus, they keep it local and support small businesses like PJ's Lager House and Nancy Whiskey's by packing the space from wall to wall every time they are in the kitchen.

This week they are taking things a little north for their latest pop-up called Street Beet Mac & Fake Cheese taking place at Urbanrest Brewery in Ferndale, Michigan this Wednesday, February 20th. The menu for this event is small, but mighty. It includes a buffalo burrito featuring Kentucky fake chicken and cashew mac and cheese, nacho mac that's made with sweet chili Doritos, and chicken and waffles inside an actual waffle cone. They even have a plant-based dessert S'more shake that features a mixture from the Ice Cream Plant, a local nut free, dairy free, gluten free ice cream maker.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. or until the food runs out, which frequently happens at their gatherings. To keep up with all things Street Beet click here. To learn more about the pop-up including a review click here.

Watch Bird Box with the Man Behind the Movie - Josh Malerman

When Bird Box was released this past December, it was an overnight sensation. The film, starring Sandra Bullock, was released on Netflix on December 21st. Within the first week of streaming, over 45 million accounts had watched the movie, setting a record for viewing of Netflix original films. It seemed like everyone was talking about it everywhere, your co-workers, your friends, radio DJs, TV show hosts, everyone. The craze was so big that people even began doing "the Bird Box challenge", where they would try to do things while blindfolded.

Well, if you haven't seen the movie yet, or you're a big fan and you'd like to see it again, this weekend is your chance! The Senate Theater will be holding a screening of Bird Box this Saturday, February 16th. To sweeten the deal, the author of Bird Box, Josh Malerman, will be at the this special engagement. That's right, that Josh Malerman. The guy that you have seen on stage with The High Strung is also an amazing author, who happened to be the genius that wrote the book Bird Box, that the movie was then based off of. Pretty impressive, right?

If you would like to watch Bird Box with Josh Malerman this weekend, tickets start at $10 and can be purchased here. With a $10 ticket, you will get into the screening and the signing with Malerman. For $25 you will also get a copy of the novel.

Doors for this event open at 1 p.m. with the organ overture beginning at 1:30. The movie will start at 2 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A session with Malerman and then a book signing. For more information on this event, visit the Facebook event page here. To check out Josh Malerman's other books, visit JoshMalerman.com.

24 Hour Giveaway: See Space Jesus at The Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre has been a part of Detroit for over 100 years now. It was first a movie theatre, and then had its down time just as many buildings in Detroit have, but for years, it has been one of the best places to see a show in Detroit. Over the last few years, the owners of The Majestic Complex have been making repairs and doing renovations to the complex. This past year, it was the theatre's turn to get a face lift. We first had a look at the renovations during this year's Black Christmas and it looks like a completely different place. The cafe is gone and instead is now part of the theatre, with a large bar area welcoming you to the space. Once you're inside the actual theatre, it's still the same place you know and love, only spruced up. If you haven't seen it yet, you have a chance to check it out for yourself at some of the great shows that they have coming up at the theatre.

One of those great shows is happening this Friday, February 15th when The Majestic brings Space Jesus to the stage with BUKU, Toadface, and Huxley Anne. Tickets to attend the show are $25 in advance. We also have a pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of AEG Detroit. If you would like to start your weekend off with a few live sets, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #space. We will draw one lucky person on Friday morning and they will get to attend this one for free!

It's Time to Re-Visit Punch Bowl Social!

It seems like every time we visit Punch Bowl Social, we ask ourselves , "Why don't we come here more often?" The downtown Detroit business offers great food, awesome drinks, and a variety of fun attractions, making it the perfect place for a night out. Punch Bowl Social recently invited us out to check out some new menu items and we couldn't say no.

During our recent visit, we took over a private bowling area for the night, where we could relax on couches, snack, sip, and bowl a few rounds. This bowling alley is not like the one your mom and dad bowled at on a league when you were a kid. It's classy, fun, and way more intimate. The alley features 8 lanes that are all rented by the hour on a first come first serve basis. Hourly rates range from $10-$12, which also includes shoe rental. If bowling isn't really your thing, there's still lots of fun to be had, with private karaoke rooms (our personal favorite), an arcade, giant Scrabble, foosball, billiards, and more.

In addition to all of the fun activities, Punch Bowl's food is arguably some of the best that we have had in the city! The portions are large, the prices are pretty low, and the food is delicious. On this occasion, we shared several menu items, including the Lil' Street Tacos, It's Nacho Mama, Peanut Sriracha Fries, and the Superfood Grain Bowl (made as a vegan variation). The three of us came very hungry, and left stuffed, with food leftover. The Lil' Street Tacos featured Cocoa Dusted Pork Carnitas with Salsa Adobo, Crema, Radish, Queso Cotija, Yellow Onion, Cilantro and Lime and they were some of the best tacos we've ever had. It's Nacho Mama is one of our favorite menu items and worth the trip alone, with Roasted Cauliflower, Fresh Jalapeño, Pickled Red Onion, and plenty of Queso. We know, cauliflower on nachos sounds a little weird, but trust us, it's awesome! The Sriracha Fries had just the right amount of spice paired with garlic mayo and peanuts, for a different take on fries than anything you've ever had before. Finally, the Superfood Grain Bowl was healthy, but still one of the best things that Sadie has ever eaten. To keep it short, we will definitely be going back for more very soon!
Punch Bowl Social's menu features a variety of great choices, with lots of vegetarian and gluten free options, so there is something for pretty much everyone. They also offer brunch daily, with a 9 a.m. start time on the weekends! Both of these things are HUGE for all of those brunch lovers out there. So the next time you're looking to get food early on the weekends, this is your place. And all of you service industry workers, this is your place if you're looking to get brunch through the week, with service beginning at 11 a.m.

Whether you make it out to Punch Bowl Social for the food, the fun, or both, make sure you also get some drinks to go along with it. One of the best drink options at Punch Bowl Social is, of course, the punch bowls. They serve up to 8 people and the price is very reasonable too! (unlike some other bars that serve up punch bowls in the city) Currently, the featured punch bowl is the Shot Through The Heart Punch, with Teakoe Pear Tea, Old Forester Bourbon and Strawberry Cinnamon Shrub. They also offer great craft cocktails and adult milkshakes. While we were there, we tried the Milk-Xologist #2, that was minty, milky, and had a hint of coffee. We weren't too sure if we would like booze in a milkshake, but it was super tasty. They also had a great bourbon selection, so we had to have an Old Fashioned with Journeyman Bourbon, which you aren't going to find at most places around town. So that was a special treat!

We cannot rave enough about Punch Bowl Social. It is seriously a hidden gem in the city and whether you've never been there before, of it has been a while since you've been there, you need to pay Punch Bowl a visit soon. The Shot Through The Heart Punch is only available for a limited time though! So don't wait too long!

Punch Bowl Social is located at 1331 Broadway in Downtown Detroit. For more info and to check out a menu, click here.

Detroit's Most Talented Come Together to Raise Money for Planned Parenthood this Valentine's Day

From 2017 to 2018 Planned Parenthood provided care to around 2.5 million patients, which added up to 9.7 million services, including over 4 million STI test and treatments, half a million breast exams, and 2 million birth control prescriptions. They also provided abortions to women who chose to end their pregnancies, which only accounts for around 3% of the program's services, but contributes to 100% of the program's problems. Many people get so worked up over the fact that SOME Planned Parenthood providers offer abortion services that they forget all the great things that this place does for women. Thankfully, Detroit's strongest women haven't forgotten how important Planned Parenthood is for our futures and they are doing something special to make sure that Planned Parenthood has all the money they need to keep providing their services to those in need.

Bevlove, Britney Stoney, Stef Chura, Willa Rae, Anna Burch, Deadbeat Beat, True Blue, don't and Ladylike are all coming together at Deluxx Fluxx this Valentine's Day to celebrate every woman's true love, reproductive freedom and choice! Tickets to attend the show are $15 and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood. Doors for this one are at 7 p.m. and this is THE PERFECT WAY to celebrate Valentine's Day while helping raise money for a great cause!

We Have the Last Pair of Lizzo Tickets in Town!

If you're a Lizzo fan, you know that she's been going hard AF to promote her new album 'Cuz I Love You coming out on April 20th. She hit up Ellen and Jimmy Fallon last week and put body positivity on the map in a whole new way. She outperformed all of her peers and showed breath control and flute playing skills that are out of this world. Plus, she looked hot AF alongside her beautiful dance squad.

We are in awe of all things Lizzo and apparently, we aren't the only ones because every date on her tour, including three shows in NYC, sold out in a matter of minutes. The last time she played Detroit, she played El Club, this time she is playing St. Andrew's, and from here on out it's going to be arenas. So, this intimate St. Andrew's show is going to be really magical.

Unfortunately, like we said, it is sold out, which means you can't buy tickets anymore. You can however win the last pair from us courtesy of Live Nation Detroit. They were kind enough to hold one pair for us so that we could gift our readers with the chance to get their ass in the door. To enter to win, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #juice. We will draw one lucky name on Monday, February 25th. Don't forget, you can pre-order Lizzo's album here. We already got our copy and we've been listening to "Juice" on repeat for a week!

Win Tickets to Celebrate Valentine's Day at The Dirty Show

The Dirty Show is one of our favorite annual events. For over 20 years, they have been seamlessly mixing raunchy and classy together to create a unique experience that celebrates sex, love, lust, art, and performance. This year's celebration of sex features more art, talent, and local food and drinks than ever before.

The full list of artists and performers can be found here, but the highlights include Glenn Barr, Chris Harder, Diane Diesel, Perle Noire, Roxie D'Lite and Jett Adore. You can also see the very talented Holly Hock, who was featured during our Willis Show Bar event (watch here). This immersive experience is designed to help attendees let loose and explore their naughtier side. You can get as weird as you want, meaning you can keep it pretty mild if you just look at the art and watch some of the burlesque shows, or you can take it to the next level if you walk into some of the more hardcore areas that cater to fetishes of all kinds.

The fun started last weekend, but you still have three more days to enjoy all things dirty this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This is the perfect Valentine's Day date and a great girls or boys night out. Tickets to attend are $40 in advance and they can be purchased online here. You can also pick up physical tickets at Noir Leather, Third Man Records, Found Sound, The Road Show, and River's Edge Gallery. These dates will sell out so don't wait until the last minute!

We also have three pairs of tickets to give away for the Valentine's Day show! If you would like to enter to win the opportunity to take your valentine to the dirtiest place in Detroit this weekend, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #dirty. We will draw three names on Wednesday and they will have tickets waiting for them at the event on Thursday night!

The Hip in Detroit Podcast is Back!

We're back!!! It's been a little while since we've done the Hip in Detroit Podcast, but now we are back and this time, it's DIY! For our first episode, we were joined by Kimball. We've been hearing a lot about this band over the past couple of years, and after seeing them play at Fusion Shows' Birthday party last month, we had to learn more about them. Give the podcast a listen below, then head over and give Kimball's latest EP North Wilson a listen here.

Huge shout out to The WAB for letting us use their new ALEchemy Room to record the podcast! Learn more about this new space at the WAB here.

Astronomicon Brings Your Favorite Pop Culture Icons to Metro Detroit

This weekend, some of your favorite movie stars and pop culture icons will be in town for Astronomicon! Now in its second year, the event is sort of similar to a comic convention, but way cooler. Last year, even big names like Jason Mewes of Jay and Silent Bob were at the event, and this time around the folks at Astronomicon have another awesome lineup. Some of the stars that will be at this year's convention include Bam Margera, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Edward Furlong (Terminator 2, American History X, Detroit Rock City), Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Sid Haig (House of 1,000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects), Jake The Snake Roberts, and many more. You can check out the full list of featured guests here.

In addition to the great guests, there is a ton of other fun to be had too! There will be free play video game rooms, cosplay contests, tattoo contests, free podcasting, Q&A panels, artists, vendors, and more! It is all happening this Friday thru Sunday, February 8th, 9th and 10th, at the Wyndham Garden on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights. Weekend passes for the event are $65, or daily passes are available for $25-$35. You can purchase your tickets in advance here. Keep in mind, many of the special guests at the event do also charge a photo op or autograph fee in addition to admission. So make sure you bring plenty of cash with you! Once you're there, you know you'll want some photos!
