Hamtramck Music Fest 2020 - Podcast & Guide

The Hamtramck Music Fest will take over the City of Hamtramck for the 7th year in a row, during the weekend of February 27-29. This year, the fest will showcase 189 acts at 23 venues throughout the city. There are some new venues on the list this time around, like Bar/Ter, The Film Lab, Port, and even St. Florian Church is getting in on the fun. The church will feature keyboard musicians playing music on the pipe organ at St. Florian, with performances by TradeMark Psalm, Yorg Kerasiotis, and Luis Resto. Another thing that is different for this year's fest is that the kick off on Thursday night will take place at 2 different venues. This time around, it will be at The High Dive and Bar/Ter. (Ant Hall will be hosting Hedwig this weekend, so they won't be taking part in the event. But, that's an amazing show too!)

One thing that hasn't changed about HMF is that it is the best deal around. Once again this year, wristbands for the entire weekend are only $15. They can be purchased online here or at the following locations:
Dearborn Music, Detroit Record Club, Detroit Threads, Dr. Disc (Windsor), Cafe 1923, Encore Records, Flipside Records, Found Sound, Hello Records, Melodies & Memories, Nosh Pit, Paramita Sound, Peoples Records, Rat Queen Vintage, Record Graveyard, Rock City Music, Smalls, Solo Records, Stormy Records, Street Corner Music, Third Wave Music, UHF Records, Underground Vinyl, Weirdsville Records
Once again this year, proceeds from the event will go to the Hamtramck Public Schools’ Music and Art programs. In years past, these funds have provided things like instruments for the marching band, and a new state-of-the-art mixing board and stage microphones for the High School auditorium.

To get ready for this year's HMF, we sat down with a few bands playing and chatted about the event. Our guests on this episode include Sean Donnelly - The Doozers, Jack Mullen - Kimball, Chris Jarvis - Ancient Language, Noah De Leon - Leland Blue, and James Linck. Click play below to give that podcast a listen, and then hit play below that to listen to tunes from all of these artists. (Special thanks to Ghost Light for letting us record this podcast in their space!)

If you would like to see any of these acts during this year's HMF, they will be playing at the following times:
Ancient Language - Friday at 11 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
James Linck - Friday at 11:30 PM @ The Painted Lady
Leland Blue - Saturday at 9 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
The Doozers - Saturday at 10 PM @ New Dodge Lounge
Kimball - Saturday at 11 PM @ New Dodge Lounge

Check out all of the other bands that are playing HMF on the schedule below. And make sure to keep that map handy so you can get to all of the venues! Remember, there will be free shuttles running between the venues, so take advantage of that service and make it to as many of these shows as you can!

Downtown Brown Celebrates the Release of "CaliFlorida" this Thanksgiving Eve

This Thanksgiving Eve, there will be a lot of fun shows and parties happening throughout Metro Detroit, but one of the best ones of all is happening at The Loving Touch. Detroit's own Downtown Brown will be celebrating the release of their seventh album, CaliFlorida. The long awaited album was officially released last month and now the band is on tour in support of the release.

Downtown Brown will be hitting the stage at The Loving Touch this Wednesday night along with The Doozers and The Scapes. Tickets for the show are $12 and can be purchased in advance here. We had a chance to chat with front man Neil Patterson about the new album and Wednesday's show. Hit play below to give CaliFlorida a listen and read ahead to see what Neil had to say!

HID- It has been almost 2 years since we talked to you last. Then, you were getting ready to leave Detroit and our winters. What's been going on in the world of Downtown Brown since we talked last?
Neil- "It's been nuts. I moved to California in 2016 to continue the band in SoCal and make new music. A whole lotta shit got in the way... my dad died, my mom had three brain surgeries (she's ok now), I had to get hernia surgery, and I had a ton of interpersonal turmoil. It took forever, but I FINALLY finished this album and we're currently on a 2 month tour celebrating that."

HID- Tell us about your new album CaliFlorida! Where did you record it? Is there any meaning behind the title?
Neil- "The title is just an inside joke. We started touring in 2007 and always called the sunshine state 'CaliFlorida'. The album was recorded in L.A. and Detroit and features musicians from Sublime, Fishbone, Parliament Funkadelic, Lynyrd Skynyrd ...as well as members of Downtown Brown's touring lineups. It's the most fully realized, best sounding album I've ever made. I'm really proud of it."

HID- This Wednesday night you're celebrating the release here at home. Why should everyone come out to the show?Neil- "Because we're gonna put on a great show in celebration of everything we have to be grateful for; our friends, our health, our home, and the fact that we still get to do this shit after 17 years of being a band."

HID- Since it's the night before Thanksgiving, what's your favorite Thanksgiving side dish?Neil- "Yammmsss"

HID- Any tips on how your fans can get through Thanksgiving day with their families after partying too much with Downtown Brown the night before?
Neil- "Pedialyte. Gatorade. Stay hydrated, folks. Take a nap. Watch the Lions.

HID- Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?Neil- "I'm just super excited to play music with my friends in our hometown. I didn't know if this album would ever get finished ...but it did. I have so much to be thankful for. I'm not in jail and I love my Mom. Life is pretty decent."

Doors will open at 8 p.m. on Wednesday night. For more info, click here.

This Saturday night, Kimball will be taking over the Ghost Light in Hamtramck for their 7" release show! The new EP is being released by Jett Plastic Recordings and will be available on limited edition colored vinyl. This is the first 7" for the band and it will feature three songs, "GUNS", "Weave Teeth", and "North Wilson". Although this release is a milestone for the band, they're not done yet. Catch Handgrenades at The Belt this Friday!

The Skip is a cool outdoor bar located in the alley of the Z Garage parking lot Downtown. The small semi outdoor space features artwork by Shepard Fairey and strong cocktails including a frozen French 75. It's the perfect place to have a cold outdoor drink in the middle of the Summer. It's also a really fun place to check out a live show.

This Friday, The Skip will be welcoming Handgrenades to their stage alongside The Doozers and Sam Morykwas. This outdoor performance is one of the few times that the band will take the stage in Michigan in 2018. If you haven't noticed, they don't play around here as much as they used to, so when they take the stage its definitely more of a treat.

The music will start at 7 p.m. this Friday. It is FREE to come out and watch them perform and drinks run around $7-$10 a piece inside The Belt. You can find out more about the show by clicking here.

Kimball Releases New Music and Plays The Loving Touch

It's no secret that there are a lot of great bands in Detroit, but every once and a while we cross paths with a band that we are absolutely wowed by. Kimball is one of those bands. They just released their debut EP North Wilson last week, and we've listened to it straight through quite a few times now. Probably more times than we should admit. Kimball classifies themselves as Indie Rock, but we would definitely include Alternative Rock in that description. Although the band has only been playing together for about two years now, their sound far exceeds what you would expect to hear based on that time period. They have a sound that you would hear on airwaves on college campuses across the country, and we're sure it won't be too long before that's a reality. They were already featured on WDET's Modern Music with John Moshier recently. You can give that a listen here. You can also give Kimball's new EP a listen below.

North Wilson has already been released digitally, but this Friday night Kimball will also be releasing the EP on CD as well as a new 7" at their release show at The Loving Touch. The record is being released by none other than Detroit's own Jett Plastic Recordings and will be available on limited edition colored vinyl. Joining Kimball for the big release show are The Doozers, Remnose and Who Boy. Cover for the show is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. You can purchase your tickets in advance here. You can also enter to win a pair of tickets to the show by emailing your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #kimball in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get in the door with a friend for free that night courtesy of Hip in Detroit and Fusion Shows.

Doors are set to open at 7 p.m. on Friday and all ages are welcome.

Check Out Kimball with The Doozers and Patty Hype

We've been hearing a lot about Kimball over the last couple of months. They are five piece band from the Royal Oak area that our friends have been raving about. The band describes their sound as a "laid back feel similar to Bon Iver and Alt-J with the upbeat energy of Hippo Campus". Give their debut release Guns a listen below to decide for yourself. Keep an eye out for new music from Kimball this spring too!

If you want to check Kimball out live, head to The Loving Touch this Friday night! They will be opening up for The Doozers and Patty Hype. Cover for this show is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. You can also enter to win a pair of tickets to the show by sending your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #LT in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get in the door with a friend for free that night.

This is a great chance to see some bands you may not have heard of yet! Check out songs from The Doozers and Patty Hype, then make your way to The Loving Touch this Friday night!
