Ancient Language Releases "In A Different Light" at The Loving Touch

It's not always easy to keep a band going. Some make it 20+ years, while others fizzle out after a year or two. As important as it is for fans to stay loyal, it is just as important for bands grow as musicians and keep putting out great music. Sometimes that means switching things up a little bit, and that's one thing that Ancient Language has done over the years. What started out as a solo act, then became a duo, has now become a full band that has grown both literally and musically.

For over a year now, Ancient Language has been playing as a full band. Earlier this year, they released their first full length together, entitled HYGGE. Now, Ancient Language has created more new music and they are getting ready to release it to the world. This Saturday, they will be celebrating the release of their latest 7"In A Different Light on Jett Plastic Recordings. The release show will take place at The Loving Touch in Ferndale, where they will be joined by Radio Wire Empire, Asklepius, and The Wayburns. Tickets to see these four great acts live are only $7 and can be purchased in advance here.

We are also giving two lucky readers a chance to get into this show with a friend for free! To enter to win a pair of tickets, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #AL in the subject line. We will draw two winners on Saturday morning and will send them details on how to claim their prize.

Doors will open at 8 p.m. on Saturday and the music will start promptly at 8:30. So don't get there late! For more info on this show, click here.

Kimball Releases New Music and Plays The Loving Touch

It's no secret that there are a lot of great bands in Detroit, but every once and a while we cross paths with a band that we are absolutely wowed by. Kimball is one of those bands. They just released their debut EP North Wilson last week, and we've listened to it straight through quite a few times now. Probably more times than we should admit. Kimball classifies themselves as Indie Rock, but we would definitely include Alternative Rock in that description. Although the band has only been playing together for about two years now, their sound far exceeds what you would expect to hear based on that time period. They have a sound that you would hear on airwaves on college campuses across the country, and we're sure it won't be too long before that's a reality. They were already featured on WDET's Modern Music with John Moshier recently. You can give that a listen here. You can also give Kimball's new EP a listen below.

North Wilson has already been released digitally, but this Friday night Kimball will also be releasing the EP on CD as well as a new 7" at their release show at The Loving Touch. The record is being released by none other than Detroit's own Jett Plastic Recordings and will be available on limited edition colored vinyl. Joining Kimball for the big release show are The Doozers, Remnose and Who Boy. Cover for the show is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. You can purchase your tickets in advance here. You can also enter to win a pair of tickets to the show by emailing your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #kimball in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get in the door with a friend for free that night courtesy of Hip in Detroit and Fusion Shows.

Doors are set to open at 7 p.m. on Friday and all ages are welcome.

Win Tickets to the Trash Brats "Out of the Closet" Vinyl Release Show

The Trash Brats have been a part of the Detroit music scene since the late '80s. It's been about 30 years that they've been rocking out and during that time they have released several albums, singles, and EPs. But, of all of them, one of the most popular still today is their 1996 release Out of the Closet. Although it has been over 20 years since the album was released, it was never released on vinyl, until now.

Jett Plastic Recordings has released a ton of great music for Detroit bands and national acts alike. This Friday night it releases the first ever vinyl pressing of the Trash Brats' Out of the Closet. In celebration of this release, the band will be performing live at Small's along with David Bierman Overdrive and Dirty Copper. This will be an amazing night of music that you don't want to miss! Tickets to this show are only $13 and can be purchased in advance here. If you're feeling lucky, you can also enter to win a pair of tickets from us! Just send your name over to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #trash in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Friday morning and they will get in the door that night with a friend for free.

Troy Gregory Releases "Xaviera" at Ghost Light

Jett Plastic Recordings has been putting out some awesome records over the past few years, from both local and national acts. Their releases have included everyone from Detroit's own The ILL Itches to Macaulay Culkin's band The Pizza Underground. We recently had the chance to catch up with Jett Plastic owner and founder Jarrett Koral on our podcast, where he talked about the label's past and upcoming releases. He told us that 2018 would be the biggest year yet for Jett Plastic, with a ton of releases expected.

One of those big releases is Troy Gregory's first vinyl record Xaviera. The album will actually be a double album, which you can get a little preview of hereTroy Gregory has been a big part of the Detroit music scene for years now, with involvement in other projects like The Witches, Prong, and The Dirtbombs. For his current solo project, Gregory performs with his band, Super Birthday, who will be performing with him this weekend at the release show. Also performing at the release show are The Idiot Kids and Cosmic Light Shapes. It's all happening this Saturday night at Ghost Light in Hamtramck.

Cover for Saturday's release show is $7 or if you wear a full cosplay costume to the show, cover will only be $4. You also have a chance to get into the show for free if you email us at hipindetroit@gmail.com with #troy in the subject line. We will draw one lucky winner on Saturday morning and they will get in the door that night with a friend for free.

Doors are set to open at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the music will start at 9. 18+ are welcome.

Hip in Detroit Waxes Poetic with Jarrett From Jett Plastic February 4th!

Flyer designed by the extremely talented @monsterfreedesign
Technology has rendered many of the things we once loved obsolete. I have a box of tapes that I have no way to play and a few shelves of CDs that I can't bring myself to part with, but the truth is that both items are relatively useless in this new digital age. One of the only things that have survived the changing times is records. Music fans that prefer vinyl will go out of their way to get their favorite albums on record even though it might be one of the most inconvenient ways to listen to music. They know that there is simply nothing like it.

Jett Plastic Recordings is a record label built by someone who simply loves records. Jarrett Koral is a passionate music lover and collector that has built a small album empire right here in Detroit. He has put out records from lots of bands, including The Idiot Kids and the infamous Corey Feldman. So, we have asked Jarrett to sit down with us live on PodcastDetroit.com on February 4th at 6 p.m. to talk about all things vinyl. We can't wait to hear his story and share it with all of you! If you have any questions that you would like to hear us ask Jarrett live on the air, please email them to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #askjarrett. You can tune in live on the 4th at 6 p.m. by clicking here. You can find out which studio we are in on that day by following us on Instagram here and you can listen to all of our previous podcasts by clicking here

JettBlast Fest 2017

Local record label Jett Plastic Recordings is gearing up to celebrate their fifth anniversary.  The boutique label boasts a pretty solid lineup, including acts like Caveman & Bam Bam, Trout, The Idiot Kids and The ILL Itches.  They even put out music from Corey Feldman!  But. that is not the most impressive, part, the most impressive part is that this label is owned, managed and run by someone who is still under 21!  Jarrett Koral is a sort of diamond in the ruff. He is someone who loves and appreciates rock and roll and understands the magic of vinyl.  He has a wicked ear for good shit and he is the kind of kid that you see out at every single show supporting local music.  So, it's fitting that he is going to bring a bunch of musicians together for the celebration.

Next weekend he will be hosting a two-day festival at PJ's Lager House that will feature 18+ bands and a ton of new release from a bunch of the bands on the roster. JettBlast Fest will take place from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th. Day passes are $10 in advance and weekend passes are $18 to $44.  You can purchase advance tickets here. But before you do, take a second and read our interview with the man behind the brand, Jarrett.  Check out what he has to say about the label, the show and the future!

HID- Why did you decide to have a festival?
Jarrett- "I haven’t really booked shows locally except for a few release shows and even then I didn’t have full control over the lineup. So, for the fifth anniversary of Jett Plastic, I wanted to celebrate it right! After getting about five bands added onto the show, more bands asked to be involved.  Eventually, this culminated into this two day, eighteen band festival! It’s been a ridiculous amount of work, but it also allows me to have all my favorite bands play and to get bands to play who don’t normally play local shows, or in the case of The ILL Itches, bands who haven’t played in a few years!"

HID- Why did you name your festival JettBlast Fest?
Jarrett- "I’m trying to think of an answer to this one, but I really don’t know. It sounded really cool and it looked good on paper!"

HID- How did you choose the lineup for this fest?
Jarrett- "I’m proud of every band on this fest. Most of the bands playing have released/are releasing records on Jett Plastic, so it really is a family affair! It’s also only $10, which is crazy considering there are nine bands per night and the show begins at 6 p.m. (until 1 a.m.!). I’ve put a ridiculous amount of work into this and I’m sure it’ll pay off! The ILL Itches are playing their first show in more than a year, Tyson Meade is in from Oklahoma (I’m playing bass with him!), Black Merda are playing a rare Detroit area show, Rocket 455 are playing, Troy Gregory, Choke Chains (Tom Potter of Bantam Rooster), The Britemores, All Seeing Eyes (feat Johnny Walker of the Soledad Brothers)…and those are only seven of the bands playing! This lineup truly is stacked and I’m really excited for these two busy, albeit wonderful, nights."

HID- Who are the bands that are coming from out of town?

Jarrett- "Tyson Meade is in from Oklahoma, who is the singer of one of my favorite bands, the Chainsaw Kittens. Deadly Lo-Fi are in from Georgia, All Seeing Eyes are in from Cincinnati…and one of my favorite bands, the explosive Brother O’ Brother, are in from Indianapolis. These bands rule."

HID- What records will your label be releasing at this fest?
Jarrett- "I’ll be releasing a bunch of new records at the fest! Really excited about this because it feels like one big release party! Will finally have Tyson Meade’s “Kitchens and Bathrooms” out on vinyl (lead singer of the Chainsaw Kittens from Oklahoma), the new 7” by The Idiot Kids with two great new tracks (one of which is a Neutral Milk Hotel cover), a new 7” by Black Merda (70s soul-funk pioneers from Detroit), a compilation of David Bowie covers featuring Brother O’ Brother, Shane Devon and Tyson Meade (I actually make my first vinyl appearance on this), and finally a compilation LP featuring ten unreleased tracks by bands playing the fest, including The ILL Itches, Brother O’ Brother, The Idiot Kids, Choke Chains, All Seeing Eyes and loads more! Super, super excited about all of these…plus, all these bands are playing the fest!"

HID- Why did you decide to host your 2-day event at The Lager House?
Jarrett- "The Lager House was the first place I saw a local show at, so I really wanted to take it back to where it began. PJ has been a great ally to the local music scene, and I’m really excited to work with him and the Lager House staff on this show. Lager can also accommodate two different stages so I needed the festival to be at a place that I can do quick changeovers. From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., there’ll only be about thirty minutes of total silence. Live life loud!"

HID- Why does Jett Plastic only release tapes and records?
Jarett- "I’ve always been dedicated to physical media, be it records, tapes or CDs. Now that I’m into this pretty much full time, I realized that physical media really is the way to go. Vinyl, simply put, is a lot more fun to play than a standard MP3. I still listen to music in the car or on the computer, but sitting down to play a record really is a wholly romantic experience. Vinyl was the first format that I really got into, so to go back to that, I just feel so much warmth."

HID- How does a band get signed to your label?

Jarrett- "There are plans to finally open a Jett Plastic storefront in the next year so after this festival, I’ll be slowing down quite a bit. I’m also in college full time so juggling all these things is difficult sometimes! During this ‘down time’, I don’t know exactly how many records I’ll be releasing. I’m always accepting submissions through the label site (www.jettplasticrecordings.com) and via e-mail. I’m always up for supporting local music and I love hearing new things, so please have at it!"

HID- What is your dream band to land on your label?
Jarett- "Tiny Tim."

HID- What does Jett Plastic have coming up in the next year?
Jarrett- "Oh boy! Full-Lengths from The Idiot Kids, Tyson Meade, Chainsaw Kittens, Troy Gregory, Crystal Drive and Billy Davis! Not to mention new 7”s from Brother O’ Brother, White Mystery, Fruit of The Loom, Ultimate Ovation and so many more. I’ve been busting my bum over here trying to get all this music out…2018 is going to kill! I’ll also hit the fiftieth release sometime in 2018, also the sixth year of Jett Plastic!"

HID- Tell me something about Jarrett that most people don't know.
Jarett- "My favorite local show I’ve ever been to was The GO with Redd Kross at the Lager House. Wolfman Band opened and for a tween (I was maybe thirteen?), the rock and roll that night helped mold me into the mini-mogul I am today. Also, my two favorite animals are alpacas and sloths, my favorite color is green, my favorite movie is The Mask, my favorite band is The Beatles, my first show was a KISS farewell tour in 2000 at Pine Knob, my favorite TV show is/was Twin Peaks and my favorite author is Ray Bradbury."

HID- Is there anything else you want our readers to know?

Jarrett- "I love local music and I love being involved in the scene. Every bit of support counts when it comes to local music, and Hip In Detroit helps make that happen. Really looking forward to 2018 and to continuing this little dream of mine. Keep on writing, keep on collecting, rock ‘n’ roll hoochie coo."

New Music from The Idiot Kids on Jett Plastic Recordings

Over the past year you've heard us talk about The Idiot Kids quite a bit. We're big fans of this band, which means we're super excited that they're releasing a new single! The new record is being released on Jett Plastic Recordings and will feature two new tracks, “Skeleton Boy” and “Bonfire” on white or pink 7" vinyl. You can check out the song "Bonfire", which was premiered by Deep Cutz, here.

To celebrate this big release, The Idiot Kids are having a record release show at PJ's Lager House on Saturday, June 10th. This will be your first chance to pick up the new 7", and the best part is that you get one for free when you pay the cover charge. That means $8 not only gets you in the door, but also gets you the new 7" straight from Jett Plastic and The Idiot Kids. That's a pretty excellent deal, especially considering that this is a pretty excellent lineup! Joining The Idiot Kids for the evening are Caveman & Bam Bam, Duane The Jet Black Eel, and Trout, who also has a new release on Jett Plastic Recordings.

Lucky for you, we are also giving away some guest list spots to this show! We are giving away 2 pairs of tickets to this show, and since you get a 7" with paid entry, that means you'll get the record too! If you would like to enter to win this contest, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #idiot in the subject line. We will draw two lucky winners the morning of the show and they will get in the door with a friend that night and will get the new 7" from The Idiot Kids.

Doors for this one are set to open at 9 p.m. on Saturday. If you want to give The Idiot Kids a listen before the release show, head over to their bandcamp here. Whether you like punk rock, garage rock, or anything in between, we're sure you will love this band!

Party with White Shag at The Magic Bag TONIGHT!

Tonight White Shag is taking over The Magic Bag in Ferndale for their big record release show! The band is celebrating the release of their new self titled album, which is actually the first full length from the band. That's pretty shocking since you've heard their name a thousand times and have seen them playing around town for years. The album is being put out by Jett Plastic Recordings. You can get a little preview of the album by listening to their song "I Want You" on Rob Reinhart's Essential Music on WDET here. (The song starts at about 1:30:00.) The band has also been doing a lot of podcasts and appearances to get ready for this big release. So make sure you head over to their Facebook here to check those out.

Since White Shag is such a kick ass band, they had to come up with a pretty kick ass lineup to share the stage with them for this big release. They have invited The Beggars and DIRTWOLF to come out and party with them, making for one of the best lineups we've seen in a while! The party is set to start at 8 p.m. Friday night and it's only $10 to get in the door. For more details on this show, head over to the Facebook event page here.

See Tyson Meade and Billy Davis in Detroit this Weekend!

This weekend music history will once again happen in Detroit! The godfather of alternative rock, Tyson Meade, will be making two very special appearances in Detroit, one with another legend!

Front man of the Chainsaw Kittens, this man and his band made a huge impact on the music scene and alternative rock as a whole. Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan are just a couple of the big names that site this guy as an inspiration. Now Meade is heading to Detroit after over 20 years for one amazing weekend.

First, Jett Plastic Recordings brings Meade to Assemble Sound for an acoustic recording session with the amazing Billy Davis on Friday night. Davis played with Little Richard, is the guy that taught Jimi Hendrix how to play guitar, and was invited by Elvis to come to Graceland to play with him. His career is absolutely amazing! Having Meade and Davis in the same place is absolutely awesome, but to witness them recording together is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Admission is free to sit in on the recording and after the performance there will be a Q&A session. This event is set to start at 7 p.m. and space is limited.

Then, on Saturday night Tyson Meade will hit the stage at the super intimate UFO Factory! Meade will be joined by a Detroit band and a few awesome locals will be opening the show. The lineup for the evening includes The Idiot Kids, the new band Trout, and Candide. Cover to this awesome show is only $7 and 18+ are welcome.

We are also giving away 2 pairs of tickets to the UFO Factory show! If you would like to enter to win, send your name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with #TysonMeade in the subject line. We will draw two lucky winners on Saturday morning and they will get to attend the show with a friend for free!

Don't miss these two awesome opportunities this weekend!

This Wednesday night there's a show happening and it's one of the best kind of shows, a FREE show! On top of it being free, it's also an awesome show. As part of the on-going Timmy's Taco Nights at Kelly's Bar, this Wednesday the bar will feature sets by two Jett Plastic Recordings artists. The lineup for the evening includes one of our all time favorites, The ILL Itches, alongside Kind Of Animal.

The ILL Itches are a band you've heard us talk about quite a few times over the years. Recently they've had a bit of a lineup change, but don't worry. They will still be playing the songs you know along with some new songs. Check out some of their tunes here.

Kind Of Animal is duo based out of Ann Arbor. The band features Max Hernandez (guitars, synthesizers, vocals) and Daniel Ackerman (guitar, synthesizers, vocals). The have songs that range from "historical sci-fi power ballads to lounge lizard disco tunes". You can check out their latest album Stucco Mapways here.

Wednesday's show is set to start at 10 p.m., but the tacos will be served up around 7:30. 21+ are welcome to attend and once again, admission is free! No need to enter to win tickets to this one! Kelly's Bar is located at 2403 Holbrook in Hamtramck. Get there early for the eats and stay late for the bands and the drinks!

Blaire Alise & The Bombshells - Tonight at UFO Factory!!!

The talk of the town this week has been Blaire Alise. She has her big album release show tonight and earlier this week it was announced that she signed a contract with Carlin Nashville. We've been big fans of Blaire for awhile now, first with Smudge Candy and then even more so with Blaire Alise and the Bombshells. Yes, it's true that she is only 18 years old, but that doesn't matter to us! The girl has talent and she works her butt off, and we're thrilled she is getting recognized for it!

Tonight Blaire Alise & The Bombshells will be releasing their newest album Just Another Day, a 4 song EP. The release show is at the UFO Factory and cover is only $7. Also on the bill are J. Walker & the Crossguards and Blood Stone with Jarret Koral (Jett Plastic Recordings) DJing throughout the night. This is Blaire's last show in Detroit for awhile, as she's heading out to New York for school in the fall. So come out to UFO tonight, pick up the new album, and wish Blaire Alise well before she heads to the Big City! It all starts at 9 p.m.

Congratulations, Blaire! We're so excited for you and can't wait to see what you do next!

Record Store Day 2015

Record Store Day 2015 is this Saturday, April 18th! The event was created to get people in to their local independent record stores and also to promote the culture of records and these stores. Over the past 8 years it has grown immensely, with tons of exclusive RSD albums being released every year and record stores holding all sorts of events, basically making a party out of it.

The Metro Detroit area has some great stores, many of which have promotions and events going on this Saturday for RSD. Here's a list of a few of the stores with activities going on this Saturday.

Flipside Records:
Doors open at 10 a.m. with Free Promos, 20% Off All Used Music, Video Games, DVDs/Blu Rays & MORE! There will also be live music from Charming Relative , Remnose & 1592!

UHF Records:
This shop will also have in-store performances in the afternoon from Moonwalks, Danny Kroha and The Muggs! There will also be a Third Man Records Roulette Wheel on site. Anyone that purchases 3 records from TMR will get a chance to spin the wheel and win records, tickets, merchandise, and more! Head over to UHF's Facebook page on Friday after 4 p.m. to see a list of what RSD releases they will have in stock.

Lo & Behold:
Lo & Behold in Hamtramck is doing things a little different for RSD. They have teamed up with Girls Rock Detroit for a Meet & Greet. The event will feature a Children's Jam Session, Folk Songs & Stories, performances by Molly Jean, Tony Paris and Dave Morrison, a raffle drawing and food and drinks. The Girls Rock crew will be on site spreading the word about their first Rock N Roll Summer Camp too. The fun happens from 2-7 p.m.

Stormy Records:
It's all about the music at Stormy Records! They will have some RSD selections in stock, but they are focusing more on the great used records that they sell every day. They have some that they have been saving just for this day and they will also have 4 crates of $2 "solid rock n roll titles".

Weirdsville Records:
Our good friends from HYPE Screen Printing will be in house slinging shirts to anyone that spends $75+! The store will also offer 20% off all used vinyl, cassettes, CDs and DVD, Those Hounds will play live and Andy Garcia is DJing throughout the day!

Melodies & Memories:
Get to this shop early and you will get a free doughnut and some orange juice! Sounds like reason enough to make this your first stop! Jett Plastic Recordings will be on site with their special RSD release, from Macaulay Culkin's band The Pizza Underground. Kenny Tudrick will also perform live.

Found Sound:
Found Sound will be hosting a hell of a show at the end of Record Store Day! The lineup includes The Beggars, Duende!, Deadly Vipers and The Scrappers. The music starts at 8 p.m. and goes to Midnight, and admission is always FREE!

There are quite a few other record stores throughout Metro Detroit that aren't on this list, but these are the ones that we heard were going above and beyond the normal RSD releases. Speaking of RSD releases, for a full list of what is being released click here. You can even download a pdf of the list here. Wherever you end up this Record Store Day, the important thing is to get out there and support your local record store. Afterall, they are the best stores around!
