The Suicide Machines are Releasing a New Split with Coquettish!

Today, two ska-punk bands from two different sides of the world have teamed up to drop some new music. Detroit's own The Suicide Machines and Toyko's Coquettish have come together to release a new split titled Gebo Gomi. We had to do a little Googling, but it seems like the translation for that title is either Vomit Garbage or Throw Up Garage, which makes sense once you see the cool artwork for the record. Gebo Gomi is being released by Bad Time Records and is 9 songs total, 4 from TSM and 5 from Coquettish. This split was mixed by Jon Graber (NOFX, Goldfinger, We Are The Union). It goes on sale today and will officially be released on 7/29/2022.

The new tracks are heavy, angry, and somehow still catchy as hell. The Suicide Machines have always been able to capture the perfect amount of anger and joy, something that makes their songs and their energy special. Give The Suicide Machines' new single "Awake" from the split a listen below.

You can purchase your copy of the new split here. You can keep up with everything The Suicide machines are doing here, you can follow Coquettish here and you can follow Bad Times Records here.

Extra Arms Ponders "What Is Even Happening Right Now"

We have always been impressed by Ryan Allen's drive and ability to keep creating. He has been in countless great bands, put out some amazing solo stuff, and played in some of your favorite cover bands (obviously I'm talking about the time we were in that Hole band together, but there are many more). He also runs marathons, is a great dad, and is always tableside supporting one of our favorite local crafters, Jodi Lynn Doodles. He is also a musician's musician. He cares about the craft and all the steps and pieces that need to come together to make something great. We've often thought about Ryan and people like him throughout the pandemic. How are they handling this, are they creating or completely drained right now? Turns out, we all handled it differently, but I'm not surprised that Ryan and his Extra Arms found a way to create, produce, and prepare to release a complete album as soon as the tides turned. On top of all that, it's a great album, just like many of the other things Ryan Allen and His Extra Arms have done over the years. We asked him a few questions about how this album came together, how his son was involved, and how he got such great guests on this album. Check out his always entertaining answers and get all the deets about the album release party at the end of the interview!

Album artwork by Ryan Cady

Hip - Where did you record your latest album? Can you tell us a little bit about the process?

Ryan Allen - Long version: The album was recorded kind of all over the place, which was sort of a new process for us, I guess. Because of COVID, lockdowns, etc. we weren't really able to get in the same room with one another until well over a year after plans were hatched to even make a new record in the first place. But once we figured out how we were going to go about putting this thing together in a socially distant manner, it slowly started to congeal into a record. In October 2020 I went over to our friend Chuck Huber's home studio (Drifting Sun Sound in Ferndale) and laid down all the songs just playing guitar and singing to a click track. No amps or anything were used - we just went straight into Pro Tools and laid things down. Very unsexy but necessary. So it was Chuck and I in a tiny room wearing masks hoping we didn't get/give COVID to one another while trying to do something creative (which I think we were both kind of starved for at that point in the pandemic). Once that was done I sent the scratch tracks, along with more fleshed out demos I made at home, to the rest of the band. At that point our drummer Dan got to work writing his parts to the songs, and would periodically send me videos of himself playing along to the tunes (since he didn't have a home recording set up at the time). I would then strip the audio from the video, lay it on top of the scratch tracks I did at Chuck's, and then we would have some semblance of how the songs were shaping up. I should add that it all sounded like absolute shit, but we were working with what we had. Once Dan and I felt like we shared notes with one another and had the songs mostly figured out, we planned for one day of in-person, masked tracking at Chuck's studio. This commenced in February of 2021. It was pretty weird to do it this way, mostly because A) I hadn't seen Dan in person since March of 2020 and B) We hadn't played the songs together yet. That said, he was super prepared and we were able to get all the drums and rhythm guitar tracked in one day. I should add that this all happened in a living room using couches as sound absorption, with some cats creeping around, fueling ourselves with soda water and trail mix. Once that was done, I started going to Chuck's every few weeks to add more guitars, percussion, and eventually vocals. I also took advantage of the little home studio I had built up during the pandemic to do a bunch of odds and ends at my house. So I was in the basement basically fumbling my way through writing and recording keyboard parts - running things through software but then re-amping everything and pumping shit through guitar effects pedals to make it sound weird. I also recorded a bit of acoustic guitar at my dad's home studio, which was great because he has some really nice acoustics that I'm too poor to own. That whole process was incredibly fun, mostly cos I was just dicking around trying to come up with cool little earworms that we may not have had time for if we were recording in a traditional studio over a short period of time. I was ALSO reaching out to musicians - both friends and ones we just admired - to try and convince them to contribute to the album (more on that below). In the midst of all that, our guitarist Michael and bassist Ryan were working on their own parts in their respective homes. We were working from demos but also coming up with stuff that weren't on said demos. At certain points Michael and I would get together, masked up, to write guitar parts. Around March/April of 2021, we were able to record all of his stuff at Chuck's studio. At the same time, Ryan was recording his stuff at home in his sweatpants. It's funny because I never actually saw Ryan once during the recording process. I think he preferred it this way (haha). We wrapped up this whole process around May of 2021, which coincidentally coincided with all of us getting vaccinated and feeling a little bit better about getting out into the world. So with that in mind, we booked time to go out to Paul Miner's studio in Orange, CA to mix and master the record. This was the first time I had traveled out of state or gotten on a plane in well over a year, so it felt like a really fun adventure while also offering a bit of a slice of normalcy that we were all craving. Michael joined me on the trip, and we had a lot of fun hanging out in the studio shaping the record, going on runs, enjoying the California weather, and even ate BBQ with the drummer of My Chemical Romance one day. Paul took everything we had assembled in our shambolic way and made it all sound fucking killer, as he always does.

Short version: We recorded it at Drifting Sun Sound in Ferndale, as well as a little bit at home, and then mixed and mastered it at Buzzbomb Studios in Orange, California. Lots of time passed between when we started it and finished it, then more time passed from finishing it to releasing it, and we all got older in the process. The end. :)

Hip - How if at all has COVID/Lockdown/ the weird world we live in influenced your writing, your music, your attitude towards music?

Ryan Allen -Well if you just read everything above, you can certainly see that COVID had a HUGE impact in how this record came together. Some of the songs were actually written in a small window of time between our last album coming out in November of 2019 and the whole world shutting down in March of 2020. I had actually been writing a lot around then, and when COVID happened, it only influenced me to keep writing more and more. I wrote more songs for what ended up on our new one, but also wrote multiple solo records and EPs that have come out, have done some fun little side projects, and just kept myself busy in general. It's probably way too much music for any single person to care about or keep track of but it kept me sane and motivated through a truly insane and anti-motivational time in pretty much everybody's lives. So in that sense, COVID made me fall even more in love with music that I already am/was. Not only did it influence me to write more and gave me new things to write about, but it pushed me to try new things, to learn how to make better-sounding home recordings, and to feel that freedom of just releasing something whenever the fuck I felt like it. I certainly missed playing live and having band practice, but ultimately I tried to channel that restlessness into creativity rather than just check out completely.

Hip - What did you miss most about playing live/seeing live music?

Ryan Allen - I think more than anything I missed the release you get from playing and singing your heart out for 40 minutes in front of living, breathing human people. I mean, let's face it, the older you get the more of a drag it is to play live music. The loading in and out of equipment can be aggravating, the waiting around can be mind-numbing, and the anxiety that I get over worrying if people are going to show up can kind of kill the fun sometimes. But nothing compares to finally being able to get up on stage, plugin, and just rip through a set with your volume and energy maxed out. That's an adrenaline rush like no other, in my opinion.

Hip - Your album bio says some of the artwork was done by your son Emitt, can you tell us a little about that? Does he have a favorite track? What is it like sharing music with the next generation?

Ryan Allen - Haha, yes it does. He got into photography a little bit during the early days of the pandemic. We bought him a camera and would go out and take photos at Cranbrook or wherever we were hiking or walking around that day. I wouldn't say he's stuck to it, but we did have him help us out a little bit when we took some photos for the artwork. I'm not sure which ones he took that were used, but he helped with the set up and just having him around making us laugh was enough to merit giving him some credit on the album. For what it's worth, I think Extra Arms and Nirvana are the only rock bands he likes. He's more into, like, Juiceworld and Ski Mask the Slump God, or whatever the fuck. But that's cool by me - he is 100% his own person and I would rather he be into his own shit than having me force-feed him, like, the new Spoon album or something. Maybe he'll get into that stuff in time, but aren't you supposed to hate what your parents like? I remember HATING Paul Simon's "Graceland" until one day it all just clicked and I fell in love with it. But even then I wouldn't admit that to my parents. I had to wait till many years later to come clean about loving "The Boy in the Bubble" and "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes". But yeah, I always play him my new songs and he loves them because he's a good boy that loves his dad, even though he probably wishes I could rap instead of play guitar. I CAN rap pretty good, though, for what it's worth.

Hip - You have a few guest appearances on this album. Can you tell us about them and how they came to fruition?

Ryan Allen - We do! I basically spent weeks reaching out to anybody who I could think of and asking them to play/sing on some of the songs. We got some rejections, some non-responses, and some things fell through, but we ultimately amassed a great cast of cameos that adds a special extra element to the record. We are super grateful we were able to get some more known folks like Matthew Caws from Nada Surf, Bob Nanna from Braid, and Gregory Macdonald from Sloan to do a little something on the album. But we're also really stoked that our friends like Scott Allen, Chris Hatfield, Matt Jones, and Lily Paul were able to contribute as well. It makes the album feel almost like a bit of a party. Honestly, it gets boring hearing the same 4 people do the same stuff on an album. With female vocals or wacky synth stuff we can't play, or even adding a saxophone, we were able to add elements to spice things up and keep it feeling fresh for both us as a band and the listener as well.

Hip - Is there anything else you want our readers to know?

Ryan Allen -We'll be having a release show on June 10th at UFO Factory in Detroit, joined by the Casket Lottery, Kind Beast, and 84 Tigers - all amazing bands. Then we'll be up in Flint the next day at Flint City Hard Cider joined by Singing Lungs and Sleepology - also great bands. We hope to play here and there throughout 2022 to promote the record, so hopefully, the world stays somewhat stable and we can play these new tunes in front of people without too much stress or anxiety. So yeah, we're looking forward to hopping back into the saddle and rocking for the people soon!

The new album is called "What Is Even Happening Right Now?" It will be released on Forge Again Records on June 3rd, 2022. It will be celebrated with a release party at UFO Factory on Friday, June 10thThe Casket LotteryKind Beast, and 84 Tigers will also be performing. Tickets are $10 in advance and they can be purchased here.

New Music: Lullabies In An Ancient Tongue from Gerard Smith

Last month, Gerard Smith released his third solo album Lullabies In An Ancient Tongue. For those that may not be familiar with Gerard, he is also the founder and a member of the Detroit Celtic rock band Bill Grogan's Goat. This new album is comprised of songs that didn't quite fit the Goat's sound, as well as new music that Smith created during Covid. The songs were recorded at the relatively new Tuxedo Avenue Recording Studios in Roseville and this is actually the first full length that was recorded there. Smith brought in several of his friends from the Detroit music scene to make this album happen, including Paco Higdon on guitars and keyboards, Justin Velic on Drums, and Tom Phillips on Bass, among many others that made guest appearances on tracks throughout the album. The sound is eclectic, with elements of Celtic music, jazz, and rock. Hit play below to give Lullabies In An Ancient Tongue a listen for yourself. If you like what you hear, make sure you are following Gerard Smith on Facebook to stay in the know on what he has coming up next.

Check Out Summer Like The Season's New Music Video + Interview with Summer Krinsky + a Show This Friday!!!

Have you heard Summer Like The Season yet? They have dropped a few singles and playing around town pre-Covid but we weren't aware of their amazingness until they released a video for their new single "Root Mean Square" off their upcoming first full-length Hum. We loved what we heard, so we reached out to learn a little more about the band. Check out what Summer Krinsky from Summer Like The Season had to say, watch the new music video, and come out to see Summer Like The Sason play @ Trumbullplex on July 9th.

HID- If you could tell yourself one thing on March 1st, 2020 what would it be?
Summer Krinsky- Buy GameStop, I can't tell you why but that company is going places. You’re gonna really care about a lady named Carole Baskin for a few weeks, and you should probably just start meditating now.

HID- What was the inspiration for your first full-length album Hum? Is there a special meaning behind the title?
Summer Krinsky- I was thinking of the simplest musical sounds we make, humming, tapping fingers, heartbeats, etc., and got this phrase looping in my head, “it started with a hum.” When I write music I really like to play with acoustic and electronic texture so I started imagining a song that starts with a hum and builds into a layered electric soundscape. As we were tracklisting the album it was pretty clear that the song “Hum” should be the title track. In a way, it turned into a thesis statement, here is a taste of all of the wild sounds and lyrical themes that this album will explore. From a different angle, each song has something to do with identity and amplifying the littlest sounds we make.

HID- What do you miss most about playing live?
Summer Krinsky- The energy in the room when a set is really connecting with someone. There’s pretty much nothing in the universe that can beat that feeling.

HID- When do you plan to return to the stage?
Summer Krinsky- Our first show back is July 9th at Trumbullplex and then we are playing a single release show for our second music video on July 31st at The Pleasant Underground!

HID- What does your creative process look like? Do you start with music and add lyrics? Do you start repeating a phrase and write a song around it? Give us a look inside your creative flow!
Summer Krinsky- It’s never the same for each song, but often a musical idea will start with hearing a sound I like in the world and sampling it to play within a DAW. Some of the songs on the record were written entirely on guitar, some started as just drums and singing, but most, like this single, began by hearing a sound like water trickle down a sewer grate in a rainstorm while loading out from a show in Duluth, MN.

HID- Where did you find the mice that starred in the new music video? Why did you decide that they were the right animal to tell your song's story?
Summer Krinsky- The dollhouse that we shot the music video in has always been at my grandparent’s house. My cousins and I used to have sleepovers there, spending countless hours imaging stories for those mice characters. It’s been a really heavy year, and most of the music is fairly serious lyrically– so I wanted to make music videos that were light and would make people smile. The song “Root Mean Square” is about seeing a relationship as a whole, but the music video is about some action figures breaking into a mouse house to jam, taking a mouse hostage, the other mice turning into dinosaurs to reclaim their jam room, and a burgeoning romance sparked by a mutual disapproval of violin smashing.

HID- Is there anything special you want us to know?
Summer Krinsky- Full album comes out September 3rd. Stay tuned for more music video single releases leading up to that!

Win a Copy of The Idiot Kids New EP "Nothing"

Album and t-shirt designs Kasper Ray

It's been a really long time since we got to announce a new release from a local band that we loved. It's also been a really long time since we got to do a giveaway. Thankfully, one of our favorite pre-pandemic bands to see live has decided that it's time to release an EP that's catchy as hell.

Today, The Idiot Kids (Jon-Mikal Bartee - Vocals/Guitar, Andrew Maslowsky- Drums/Backing Vocals, Nicholas Zambeck - Bass) are dropping a new four-song EP called Nothing. To celebrate the album and to reconnect with the band, we had a quick chat with lead singer and writer Jon-Mikal Bartee. Please read what he has to say and then head to the bottom of this post for details on how you can win a prize pack that includes the new EP, a shirt, and more!

Live photos Erick Bucholz

Hip- Let’s start with, how have you been doing? Tell us a little bit about how you are!
Jon-Mikal Bartee- I’m doing well! Very excited to be releasing new music.

Hip- Do you miss live music? Performing? If so, what do you miss the most?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- I miss performing more than anything! We recorded these songs in February of last year and we were very excited to share them and start planning a tour, but then everything shut down. It was devastating because performing live is very cathartic for me. The thing I miss most is the shared experience of performing live with friends.

Hip- How has COVID influenced your creativity?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- The uncertainty of the pandemic at first was overwhelming but it forced me to focus more on writing since there was no option to play shows. There was a need to create just to stay grounded. It gave me a lot of time to experiment. I recorded a bunch of demos that I might not have had it not been for isolating at home.

Hip- When did you write this new EP? What was the inspiration?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- These are all songs that I needed to write at different times in my life as sort of diary entries. Written very quickly on the spot and then fleshed out over time. Some dating back to 2011 when we started the band. Stylistically all these songs have more of a pop feel to them. That’s why I felt they all worked well together as an EP.

Hip- Why this music? Why right now?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- These are some of my favorite songs that we’ve done. I’m releasing them now cause I honestly just don’t want to wait any longer. I’m really proud of these recordings.

Hip- What does "Nothing" mean to you? Why is it a central theme of the album?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- “Nothing” was one of the first songs I ever wrote. It’s a sort of nonsense song that’s about screaming out frustrations with things you can’t control. The whole EP deals with coming to terms with and accepting yourself for who you are.

Hip- What is the quiet game?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- The title comes from a children’s game where everyone has to be silent and the first one who makes noise loses. I wanted to write a song where I fully and unapologetically embrace my queerness. Growing up in the church as the pastor’s kid, I had to keep quiet about who I was. So “The Quiet Game” is me making noise.

Hip- What's next for The Idiot Kids?
Jon-Mikal Bartee- Hopefully we will be able to play shows again soon. I want to get out and start playing again by the end of summer/early fall. We have a lot of new material and I’m excited to get back in the studio and get another album out.

If you would like to win a prize pack from The Idiot Kids please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com. We will draw 1 lucky winner 1 week from today and we will connect them with the band to set up a convenient way to get their goods.
We loved the new EP's upbeat vibes and we think you will too, make sure that you give it a listen!

Who Boy is Back with New Music

Like most bands, Who Boy has been relatively quiet since COVID hit. Before the pandemic, they had just released an EP entitled ONEHUNDRED 100 and they were ready to play the tunes live. They had shows lined up and plans for the year. They were even on the bill for MOPOP. Obviously that all changed. Shows were cancelled, MOPOP was cancelled, and things got pretty quiet for the band.

Well now Who Boy is back and they have some new music! The band just released a new single called "Yellow Check" this week. The song is an ambient track and is completely different from anything that they have released in the past. Give it a listen by clicking play below.

If you like what you hear, head over and follow Who Boy on Facebook and Instagram. They plan to release another new song in a couple of weeks! We had a chance to check it out and it is a good mix of the new and the old Who Boy. So we think you will like what you're going to hear!

Sam Morykwas Wants to Show You What Electric Green Sounds Like

After years of hard work and perseverance, Sam Morykwas released his first full-length album last week. He spent a lot of time fine-tuning each track to make it sound exactly the way he heard (and saw) it in his head. Once he locked down the perfect color for each song (we'll let him explain that to you) he was ready to let everyone else hear what he sees. The final product is his new album Electric Green, a 13 song masterpiece that will get stuck in your head after the first listen.

We sat down for a virtual interview with Sam to talk about his new album, his Wednesday listening parties, and what's happening at The Eastern Market, where he is currently the marketing director.  Check out what he had to say and then give Electric Green a listen, we think you'll love it!

A message from Sam:
"Please, listen to Electric Green from front-to-back the first time through! The album is designed to be played in order, but easily breaks into pieces once you’ve heard the whole project."

Ladysse Has a Much Needed Dose of Dopamine For You

Dopamine is known as the feel-good neurotransmitter—a chemical that ferries information between neurons. The brain releases it when we eat food that we crave or while we have sex, contributing to feelings of pleasure and satisfaction as part of the reward system. Ladysse's new single "Dopamine" elicits the same kind of pleasurable reaction when you hear it for the first time. It's depressing, uplifting, and catchy as hell. It's exactly the kind of track we needed to dance our way through this extraordinary different summer. We reached out to Stephanie aka Ladysse to see how she handled the lockdown and how she deals with depression. Give her latest single "Dopamine" a listen and check out what she's been up to below!

Listen to Dopamine

Here are five quick questions with Ladysse:

Hip- How did you pass your time during a lockdown? How did you cope with everything slowing down?
Ladysse- "Quarantine was a bit of a blessing in disguise for me because it forced me to stay home and focus on a bunch of new music projects that my brain is usually too scattered to finish! One of my producers and I started a little side project that made writing feel like a zero pressure, just for fun, creative exploration and it’s EXACTLY what I needed."

Hip- Red nails, red pants, red outfits. Why red?
Ladysse- "Red is my absolute favorite color! Haha, it makes me feel strong when I wear it. I think everyone has that color that makes them feel like they own the world. Red is that for me:)"

Hip- What's your favorite summer activity?
Ladysse- "Being outside! I always feel so alive and inspired by nature so I want to be out in it as much as possible. I live in such a beautiful state and I can’t wait to get out on some more hikes, kayaks, bike rides, whatever it is, get me outside and give me a fruit popsicle and I’m all set haha!"

Hip- Your new song is about depression. Have you ever been depressed? How did you get your dopamine back up? Any suggestions for someone who might be feeling down right now?
Ladysse- "Oh man, yes I have definitely struggled with depression a few times in my life. I feel like it’s something almost everyone has in common at one point or another. I’m kind of known as a “talker” so I am usually the one to reach out to my friends first when I’m feeling down. I have an amazing support system of people that are always there to listen. I’ve also become a huge listener of comedy podcasts! Small town murder is my current favorite. Sometimes I’ll put an episode on and walk to a park and just cry/ laugh. Haha, that sounds a lot more emo know that I type it! Most importantly, I think the best thing to do is reach out to someone you trust. Find your safe space where you can let some tears out. Try working out or dancing in your room. Anything that makes your heart feel lighter. Find that thing and let yourself FEEL your feelings."

Hip- If you could talk to your 15-year-old self, what advice would you give her?
Ladysse- "I would tell her to stop arguing with her parents about not wanting to practice piano and just do it because it will pay off someday;)"

New Music From Boudoir Noir

Boudoir Noir released their latest EP called Endless Dawn this week. The sensational sounds of Maria's voice pairs perfectly with Beni Schlatter's drums and Graham Rockwood bass to create a seductive musical dance for you ears. When you see them perform live, Maria's stage performance mimics the music to create an out of this world visual experience that takes the art of performance to another level. Boudoir is a band that you experience, not just music that you listen to.

Download the new album and spend a few minutes reading our latest interview with Maria about the album and the upcoming release shows. Then, mark your calenders to celebrate the release the way it was meant to be experienced, live and in person. Boudoir Noir has put together one of the sexiest lineups of the summer. They have teamed up with Rarewolf, The Old Adage, and Odd Hours to create a one of a kind night that will be as cool to watch as it is to listen to. This will be a treat for your ears, eyes, and minds.

HID- Where did you record the EP?
BN- "We recorded everything in our home studio. Then we went to 54 Sound in Ferndale to mix it and had it mastered in New Jersey by Joe Lambert."

HID- What was it like working with Tunde Olaniran?
BN- "An absolute blast! Tunde has creativity spilling out of his ears. He is an absolute focused, creative force of energy in the studio. He was also the only person my cat would let pet her, so that says a lot in my book."

HID- Why did you name the new EP Endless Dawn?
BN- "Endless Dawn represents a never ending chance to begin again. It's also about connecting to the never ending source of light and energy, if you want to take it to that level. This album was a chance for us to start over musically and explore a new sound that resonated with us more, in this new stage of our lives."

HID- Your live shows are very physical. How do you prepare for your live shows?
BN- "I love doing yoga before a show. It helps me to center, to get out of my head and come back into my body. It also reminds me that music is a gift that should be shared, and it's not about my ego."

HID- How did you learn to dance with the Egyptian wings?
BN- "I learned from the academy of YouTube, meaning I watched YouTube videos and danced in front of a mirror. Ha!"

HID- Who does all your visuals for the EP and the website? The pictures are beautiful!
BN- "The EP graphics were done by my lovely cousin Shelby Harmon. Since we were little we always talked about ways to collaborate her art with my music, so it was a thrill to make that happen. Our photos were done by the wonderful Spilt Sugar. She's also an amazing silk aerialist dancer, so she knows how to beautifully capture the movement of artists. We're working on finding a venue with the right ceiling to have her dance with us at one of our shows as well."

HID- Where will the EP release party take place?
BN- "At Soggy Bottom Bar in Flint on June 17th, then we're doing a Detroit show on July 16th at Northern Lights Lounge.

HID- Who is opening the show?
BN- "In Flint it's Alexander Lynch and Phosphor Elephants. In Detroit it's RareWolf, Odd Hours and The Old Adage."

HID- Do you have any special looks planned out for the release show?
BN- "We definitely have some things up our sleeves. *Wink, Wink"

HID- What fests are you playing this summer?
BN- "We're playing Hell's Half Mile fest in September, Detroit RiverDays on June 24th, The Blue Water Fest in Port Huron and we're also working on playing the Detroit fests like DIY Street Fair, Arts Beats and Eats and Dally, if they're having it this year. We'd also love to play Theatre Bizarre. Our live show would go perfectly there."

HID- What bands have you been listening to lately?
BN- "I love this question! I'm in love with all of the Detroit bands that are kicking ass right now: Valley Hush, Ancient Language, James Linck, BevLove, all the bands playing our shows with us and so many many more."

HID- Is there anything else you would like our fans to know?
BN- "We have some amazing scented soy candles that I make in an engraved wine glass. They smell incredible, and they're the perfect thing for a night in your Boudoir. They're available on our website- www.boudoirmusic.com and at our shows."

NEW MUSIC: Detroit's RareWolf Drops New Track "Manimal"

Detroit has an ever evolving music scene. Sometimes the embers from the ashes of one band spark the fire of another.  RareWolf is a new band that was formed when all three members' former projects came to an end. One of those members, singer Lauren Long, is an artist that I have been following for awhile now. She sang in Seven Birds One Stone and did the best Amy Winehouse cover that I have ever seen at Creepy Cheapy. She has one of the sexiest, sultry voices I have ever heard and you can hear her passion for music when she belts out a tune.

RareWolf is a very different project for Lauren, so it sparked our interest when she sent over their first track. I took a listen and loved it. It's poppy, it's dancey, and her voice is still full of passion. Push play on the band's first track "Manimal" and read ahead to learn more about the band. I have a feeling that you will be seeing and hearing a lot more from this band in the future.

HID- Who is RareWolf?
RareWolf- "The band consists of longtime friends Lauren Long (vocals), Brian Loch (pad/instrumentals), and Joe Garofalo (keyboards). All three members grew up locally, and are passionate participants in the Metro Detroit music community. RareWolf blends our infatuation of electronic music with sonorous vocals to create a juicy, bouncy sound as thick and as sweet as honey. Although there are many variations, the traditional recipe for "RareWolf" is: 1 part pad synth, 1 part smoky vocals, 1 part heavy-effect keyboard, a dash of city-pop, 2 pinches of booty shaking, and 1 cocktail of choice."

HID- How long have you been playing together? How did you meet and decide to form the band?
RareWolf- "We started RareWolf in January of 2015, and played our first show together in August 2015 at B One Ballroom in Keego Harbor. We were all in previous projects, and had musically crossed paths before. Lauren and Joe were both members of the Indie Pop band Seven Birds One Stone, and Brian was a member of Dinosaur Twins. We played our very first Seven Birds show with Dinosaur Twins, and have been supporters of each others musical careers ever since.

When our previous projects came to an end, we were all hungry for a new music outlet. That's when the magic happened. The three of us connected and decided to experiment with a style of music that we all had a common love for, but never the opportunity to fully pursue in the past: Electronic music.

We played live shows from August until November, and then decided to take some studio and practice time to get comfortable with our new set up and record our first few singles. Now, our singles are recorded and our set kicks a$, and we are back on the scene with shows scheduled throughout the spring summer and many more on the way!"

HID- How do you describe your sound?
RareWolf- "We think we bring a fresh sound to the Detroit music scene by playing a fun and upbeat brand of synth pop blended with hip hop style beats and powerful vocals."

HID- Tell us a little bit about the first single Manimal.
RareWolf- "Our first single, "Manimal" blending elements of dance and synth pop. We think it is the perfect song to blast on your stereo system when your cruzin' to a party on a Friday night with your friends! We will get your blood pumping and your ride bumping with this lusty, high energy tune!"

HID- When will we hear more new music from the band?
RareWolf- "We just recorded a new song called song "Hotel" at 37 Studios with Matt Dalton. We will be releasing "Hotel" this spring and will shoot a music video for it this spring or summer. We are continually recording in the studio and will release a video with each song we put out! 37 Studios is also where we recorded "Manimal"."

HID- Will you be playing any live shows?
RareWolf- "Yes! We have some spring and summer shows lined up, and are continuously adding more shows to the schedule. Here are a few:

We will be playing with Chicago based band "North by North", as well as "The Zots" and "Mountain Club" at PJ's Lager House on 5/4 at the venue's new location on Moran Street in Detroit.

We are playing "Whateverfest" in Scripps Park on 5/8.

And, we are playing at The Phoenix Café on 5/14 with "Lost in Artificial Reality", a synth-pop band from Paris, as well as "Maya Mereaux", "Kitty Kush", "Telephon 9", and "Dos Lopez".

We are also playing the "Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival" held in Bay City on 9/22.

HID- Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
RareWolf- "We would like everyone to know that YOU are what keeps the local music scene alive! YOU as in the fans, the supporters, the community, the musicians, and the venues. We are all pieces of one big, giant, grinding machine that work together to reach a common goal, and that goal is expressing ourselves through the power of music and creative energy. We thank you for coming out to shows and festivals, for following our social media, and for smiling and getting down to our music. As the members of RareWolf, we would like to commend all of the hard working musicians in the area! Detroit's artist and musician community grows every day and is so inspiring. We are fans of so many local acts, and show our support whenever and however possible. Whether it be by featuring other artists in our songs or videos to introduce you to other local talent we love and support, or by heading out to a new band's show to check them out, we will always be active members in the local Metro Detroit music community. Please help us by communicating with us about what you would like to see, hear, or experience at a show! We welcome and would appreciate your feedback."
