Frank White's "All Glory Is Fleeting" - Your Fucking New Favorite CD

If you're anything like me you probably listen to a lot of music. I check out lots of different bands and have a shit ton of albums. But, every once in a while you are lucky enough to come across an album that is simply fucking awesome. That happened to me last week when the new release from Frank White was sent my way.

Frank White is finally releasing a full length album entitled All Glory Is Fleeting. Along with all Frank White fans, we have been waiting for this for a long time. And, let me tell you, it is well worth the wait. The guys come out of the gate swingin' right on the first track and don't let up. "1%" is right in your fuckin' face and will probably become the new anthem for a lot of the Detroit punk rockers. That song and most on this album are bound to make you want to grab your friend, throw a beer up in the air, and sing along. If you are a fan of the popular Frank White song "Live Forever" you will love this album as there are a whole slew of new songs for you to belt out at the top of your lungs.

Last week Frank White leaked a new song off the album with an official stream on Dying Scene, which you can check out here. The track, "Fade Away", features a guitar solo by the band's long time friend Ryan Collins (The Swellers). Actually, they called in quite a few friends to be a part of this album, with additional solos from Mike Supina (A Wilhelm Scream), Pat Supina on the keys (The Mutants) and guest appearances by Matt Wixson, Jeff Supina, Jimmy V and Alex Thorpe. Let's just stick with the cliche sayings here and say that they pulled out all the stops. After taking some time off as a band, they've been waiting a long time for this release and they knew their fans had been too. So they just fucking went for it and it fucking paid off.

And let me take a minute to apologize for all of the "f-bombs" in here. After listening to this CD more times than I can count, Frank White's continuous use of "fuck" throughout all of the songs must have just rubbed off on me. At the end of the album, after a very "Bourgeois Filth-esque" thank you sequence, they even add a fuck you. Probably the perfect way to end the album. (Sorry to the guys in Frank White for the spoiler).

So, if you want to check out All Glory Is Fleeting for yourself, it is being released on Bandcamp on Tuesday, May 13th.
It will be available for download there or if you want a hard copy, head out to the New Dodge on Tuesday, May 20th to pick up a CD. Frank White will be playing that night with The Shell Corporation, Fires In Japan, and a special acoustic performance by Break Anchor. But, even if you want to wait 'til the show to pick up a CD, do yourself a favor and head over to their Bandcamp and listen to the songs before then. You'll be happy you can sing along next week! (Make sure you check out "Get It Right" - It will be in your head all day, but you won't be pissed about it.) Entry to the release show is only $8 and 18+ are welcome. You can get more details on that here.

Congratulations to Frank White on recording and putting out such a good fucking album. We have a feeling this is going to be the soundtrack for a lot of parties this summer!

Five Reasons to See Frank White at The Old Miami

This Thursday night Frank White is taking over The Old Miami and you don't want to miss it! First off, Frank White shows are always a good time. But, if that's not enough reason for you to go, this is your chance to check out some new tunes from the band.

They are currently putting the finishing touches on a new album and it sounds like it's going to be pretty amazing. They even are bringing in a few friends as guests on the record, like Ryan Collins from The Swellers and Mike Supina from A Wilhelm Scream. Thursday's show is the your first chance to hear some of these new songs. On top of that, this is one of the few times Frank White is playing this year. So, if you don't see them now, it might be a while before you do!

In case we haven't given you reason enough to head out to this show, we asked Jesse from Frank White to give us the top 5 reasons you aren't going to want to miss this!

#5: It's a great excuse to go out drinkin' on a Thursday night!

#4: You're guaranteed a better time at the show than anywhere else that qualifies as 'not at the show'

#3: The line up - finally a show where you don't have to skip the opener; the show offers no bullshit from front to back

#2: Whiskey and Friends

#1: Frank White.......why the f*ck wouldn't you be there?!?

Joining Frank White on the bill Thursday night is Due NorthFlamingo NosebleedAadia and The Arrogant Bastards. Doors open at 9 p.m. and it's only 5 bucks to get in the door. The Old Miami is located at 3930 Cass Ave. in Detroit. For more info on this show and to stay in the loop, RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Keep It A Threat 5! - Video with Dougie and Jae!!!

Coming up on Saturday, September 28th there is a festival that is so awesome that we had to tell you about it a little earlier than we normally would. Keep It A Threat 5 is an all day skating and music festival held at Transitions Ramp Park. This event that is in its fifth year (hence the 5) is put on by two great guys, Dougie and Jae. They decided to start this event because, at the time of it's fruition, there were no other fests of this kind in the area and not really any fests at all for that matter.

We met up with Dougie and Jae for a few drinks and to chat about KIAT. Check out what they had to say and we hope you enjoy the soundtrack provided by the fine folks at the Garden Bowl.

As Dougie, Jae & Sadie mentioned, this year's lineup is pretty amazing. It includes Against the Grain, Dead Church, Snakewing, Axe Ripper, The Gutter Ghouls, Golden Torso, The Armed, St. Thomas Boys Academy, Frank White, Teenage Rehab, Murder Party, Voice of Addiction, Bad Assets, The Flaks, Desiring Dead Flesh, Stale Phish, and of course, Aggro or Die! and The Dewtons. 18 stellar bands for a measly 13 bucks. Plus, you can skate while you are there and you BMXers can even ride too! All ages are welcome to Keep It A Threat and doors open at 10 a.m. with music starting at Noon. The fest goes all day 'til about 11 p.m., but you should probably just drag your ass out of bed early for a change. We're sure it will be worth it! For any other details you might want to know, head over to the Facebook event page here.

A Homecoming for 1/5 of A Wilhelm Scream this Saturday!

This Saturday at the Magic Stick Black Iris Booking is bringing a show to town that we are thrilled about. A Wilhelm Scream will be hitting the stage as they wrap up their summer tour with The Flatliners and Such Gold. Although the band reigns from New Bedford, MA, their amazing guitar player, Mike Supina, comes from Metro-Detroit and is an old friend of ours. Even though Mike's roots are here in Michigan, A Wilhelm Scream rarely plays in the area and actually seems to be out playing countries around the world more often than they do here in the U.S.  So this is a real treat.

The punk/hardcore five piece has a new 7" out that is available on this tour. The album features their new single "#1". You can check it out below.

Saturday's show is only $12 and Frank White will also be playing. The show is open to all ages and doors are at 8 p.m. Black Iris is also throwing an after party downstairs at the Garden Bowl with S.N.A.F.U. and Slaves to the Pavement. That show will start immediately after the show upstairs (probably around midnight) and is free. Coincidentally, Saturday night is also Christie from Hip In Detroit's 30th Birthday and we will be partying it up at both of these shows. So if seeing some awesome bands and one of the best guitarists to ever come out of Detroit wasn't enough reason for you to come out to this show, celebrating the birth of one of the ladies of Hip In Detroit is all the reason you need. For all of the details on Saturday night visit the Facebook event page here.

Get Ready to be Blown Away by Against The Grain and Surrounded By Snakes This Friday!!!

This Friday marks a show and a party that we have been counting down the days 'til at Hip In Detroit. Against The Grain is releasing their 3rd full length album Friday, May 31st at The Magic Stick. Joining them that night will be Beast In The Field, Frank White, The Amino Acids, The Swingin' Dicks and SNAFU.

We were lucky enough to get an advanced copy of the new album, Surrounded By Snakes. It's so fucking good. I realize that's quite the simple explanation, but it's the first thing that comes to mind after listening to this CD. Most bands could only hope to put out an album as good as ATG's previous full length Motor City Speed Rock. The fact that this band has followed that up with an even better album in just a year's time is amazing. Some of the songs on Surrounded By Snakes aren't quite as fast as other Against The Grain songs, but there's still enough speed-rock on the album to balance it out and keep the die hard ATG fans satisfied. Although some of the songs are slightly slower (for this band at least), many of them have chorus lines that crowds are bound to pile up for and shout along to, which is an added bonus. Every show will be even more of a party than they have been in the past.

Check out the music video for the title track "Surrounded By Snakes" and some footage we got of "Last Breath" during the Blowout.

In anticipation for this album and show we wanted to catch up with the band to get the inside scoop on the album, see what the band has been up to and what's next for these guys. Drummer Rob Nowak was nice enough to answer all of our questions. Here's what he had to say.
Hip In Detroit- How would you describe Against The Grain to someone who has never heard you before?
Rob- "Hey Christie, thanks for taking the time to ask us some stuff! ATG is a musical speed-ball of whiskey slammin' speed rock that delves into some sludgy-fuzzy-rock n roll every now and then."

Hip In Detroit- Tell us about the new album! Where did you record? How did you come up with the name? Where did you get some of your inspiration for this CD?
Rob- "The new album is a continuation of all things loud, heavy, and fast all based around rock and roll. It was written in 2 months, and recorded at The Tempermill in Ferndale with the talented Tony Hamera over 3 days. Drums and bass were recorded live (10 of the 12 tunes first take) on analog.
This album's music is a little more based around the song writing and less fast as shit all the time as our previous record. CD drops May 31st, record (out on Self Destructo Records) drops July 12th.
The album title comes from the selfishness you see when you're out on the road. These last two years we've been out on the road pretty much non-stop. We've met some of the greatest people in the world, but we've also seen a lot of backstabbing and selfishness by other bands. There are bands out there that are entirely about themselves, and won't do anything that doesn't benefit for themselves. We wrote the song after a stream of some bad run-ins. We are not about that. We are about community, friendship, and good times. One hand washes the other."

Hip In Detroit- Who in the band writes the songs? Is it a group effort or is there a mastermind?
Rob- "Our songs are always started off by one person, then the rest finishes. Everyone in ATG writes at least 2 songs per album, but we all know what were good at writing. Chris and Kyle write most of the lyrics. It's very organic though. Every song, every person has a little bit of say, that's why our albums can have 12 songs, all written by 5 people. Usually starts with a riff."

Hip In Detroit- So, you recently shared the song "Last Breath" off the new album and said that Kyle wrote it about killing his step-dad. What's that all about? Or do we not want to know?
Rob- "You don't want to know."

Hip In Detroit- You guys are getting ready to head out on a pretty extensive tour. Where will you be heading? Any dates/towns you are especially looking forward to?
Rob- "We plan on playing every major city this year. We want to be road-dogs. No sense in staying here, or you'll all get sick of us! We're in this for the long haul.
I'm excited for our dates with The Swingin' Dicks, The Hookers, and Angry Samoans. It's always fun to tour with another band. Denver, Madison, Green Bay, Chicago, PA, SLC, So-Cal, TX. All always great to us. Excited to see a lot of our old friends too! Now it's to the point where every city we're looking forward to spending time with a few friends we've made. It's awesome."

Hip In Detroit- You booked the entire tour yourself which must have been quite the feat. Any advice or dos and don'ts for other bands working on booking tours?
Rob- "In the beginning it's about making friendships and long-standing business relationships with clubs, bands, and promoters. Be prepared to lose your ass and expect nothing to go as planned. It's a big ball to get rolling, hold in there and have fucking fun. Treat other bands with respect because in the beginning we all started because we're all music fans!"

Hip In Detroit- Are there any must have items that the ATG tour van has in it at all times? What's the one thing you guys can't live without while you are on the road?
Rob- "We're pretty fucking minimalistic actually. We don't have AC in the van (even out west!), no tablets or anything. Give us some good grub here and there and an iPod. We get REAL tour weird after a couple days haha. We shoot hoops and shit during days when we're bored. Go out to eat here and there. Good brews and friends. BBQs with friends are major moral boosters."

Hip In Detroit- Tell fans what to expect at the album release show on May 31st.
Rob- "Your hearing to be impaired."

Hip In Detroit- What's next for ATG?
Rob- "More releases and touring. Some exciting big tours we're currently working on. Vinyl!"

Hip In Detroit- What would be the ultimate goal for Against The Grain? Touring with someone? Getting signed to a certain label? World domination?
Rob- "To have a party sub back stage at every show waiting for us. 3 kinds of meat."
Against The Grain's release show on Friday is being presented by Black Iris Booking. Doors for this All Ages show open at 7 p.m. and it's only $6 to get in. The CD is only $4. So 10 bucks is getting you one of the best CDs put out this year and you get to see 6 kick ass bands. You can't really beat that! There will also be raffle tickets available at the door for $1 to win one of the 5 test presses of Surrounded By Snakes on vinyl.

Speaking of winning... the ladies of Hip In Detroit and Black Iris Booking want to give you the chance to win your way into this amazing show. We are giving away one pair of tickets to get in on Friday. So, whether you are too broke to spring the $6 each to get in or if you just want to try your luck, here's what you have to do. Head on over and "share" the ATG poster that is on our Facebook page here. One lucky person will get in for free with a friend. We will be picking the winner Friday morning! Good luck!

Frank White Tonight @ The P.A.N. Shop!

There are so many awesome shows going on tonight, you're going to have some tough decisions to make! In addition to the shows at The Loving Touch and Paycheck's, the P.A.N. Shop will be having a great one, too.
Tonight, Frank White will be having another reunion show at the P.A.N. Shop. Getting to see them again and hear their hilarious ramblings in between songs could never be a bad thing. They are working on a new EP right now, but until we get to grace our ears with some new tunes, you can listen to all their other ones here, or even buy some sweet merch here. The lineup tonight also includes C.B.J., Aadia (IN) and The Flaks.

If you've never been to a show at the P.A.N. Shop before, you can learn more about it here in our interview with Jesse from the shop. The guys there are awesome and always fun. Get ready for some drunken ridiculousness and get to Warren early tonight because it's only $5 before 9, $7 after. The show starts at 8 p.m. and as always it's BYOB- can't go wrong with that! The P.A.N. Shop is located at 22641 Van Dyke in Warren.

The Return of Frank White!

Saturday night you have a chance to see one of the greatest Detroit Punk Rock bands from our generation. They've taken a break for a few years now, but it's true... they're back. The big reunion show is at the Toepfer House and we can't think of a better place to have this. Great people, great atmosphere and BYOB. If you haven't been there yet, this is the perfect excuse to go.

Frank White played a show a couple of weeks ago to get warmed up for the big reunion show. It was awesome. They haven't missed a beat while they were away and they're dialogue during the set will crack you up... Well, hopefully. If you aren't familiar with Frank White, or if you want to brush up on the songs so you can sing along, they have a bunch of tunes up on bandcamp.

The line-up for Saturday's show is awesome. On top of Frank White, it includes The A-Gang (whom you can also see at our 1 Year Anniversary Show), Fires In Japan, Matt Wixson's Flying Circus and this is the last show for the Marshall Cardinals. A big night that you don't want to miss! 5 Bucks will get you in the door and as always it is BYOB. Toepfer House is located in Warren off Van Dyke between 8 & 9 Mile at 8741 Toepfer. See you there!
