Four Female Fronted Bands In Ferndale

This weekend many women across the world marched together to let the new administration know that we are not going to be silent if we disagree with the direction that this country is taking. Here in Detroit they estimated that around four to five thousand people gathered at Wayne State to march together on Saturday morning. One of those marchers was local musician Jo Champagne from Siamese.

Jo is one of those bad ass women that isn't afraid to support other women. In fact she is hosting an all female fronted four top at The Loving Touch this Saturday, January 28th. She recruited Queen Kwong, Dear Darkness and Kaliedo to perform alongside Siamese on Saturday to showcase the talents of some of Detroit's female musicians. Every one of these projects is female fronted by an amazing woman who isn't afraid to get on stage and command some attention.

We had the chance to talk to Jo about the event and her background as a woman in music. Check out what she has to say and then head up to The LT this Saturday for another weekend of female power and good music!

HID- What inspired you to put a show together that featured all female singers?
Jo Champagne- "Last year we put together a show at The Loving Touch that featured all female led bands (Fawnn, Odd Hours, and Tart). It was one of our favorite shows, so we decided to do it again this year with a different line up. Plus, with the political climate as it is right now, I think celebrating females who kick ass is a great thing."

HID- Why do you think it’s important to showcase female musicians?
Jo Champagne- "Female musicians are often held to a different standard than male ones. It is intimidating, and I feel that is why there are so few of us in the scene. I have been in bands where other musicians would mock how women hold their guitars and belittled my opinions and abilities. I have played wayyy too many shows where I am treated like a girlfriend of a band member, other than a musician myself. We get comments at almost every show we play about how surprised people are that our drummer, Angie, is actually good. Women don't get the same type of respect, and it's incredibly frustrating. I wanted to put this show together featuring strong, powerful, talented females because I want to say “fuck that.” Every band on this bill is one I enjoy for the music, and they just happen to be led by a woman. None of us playing are “shrinking violets” or little kittens stuck in a tree. We will all be kicking, screaming, and making noise."

HID- How old were you when you started playing music?
Jo Champagne- "I have been playing music since elementary school. I started taking piano lessons back then, and eventually went in to musical theater. I started playing in bands towards the end of middle school, and I just never stopped."

HID- When did you write your first song?
Jo Champagne- "When I was very very little, probably about 5, I would record my own songs on cassette with just me singing about whatever was going on in my head. I would fill up the whole tape, and then make another. I started writing piano songs in elementary school."

HID- When did you play live for the first time? When and where and with who?
Jo Champagne- "I started acting and singing in musical theater around age 7. I did play a few concerts on piano around that time too. I first started playing with a band in middle school, and we had our first show freshman year of high school. It was at some really crappy “battle of the bands” gig. This was with a few people I met through my guitar teacher. I had to do a bass solo for some judges, and they were all very serious looking. They had everyone tell them who their favorite musician was. All the other teens were giving very respectable answers such as Miles Davis. I told them mine was Marilyn Manson, ha ha. I didn't win that contest. Obviously. I think my musical theater background comes out on stage. I have to actually feel the emotion of whatever I am playing/singing, and usually it is anger."

HID- Do you think that female musicians are treated different than male musicians? If so how? Why?
Jo Champagne- "YES. We are often treated like accessories. A lot of times others assume that the men in the bands are the ones writing the music, and we just sing or play it. I have no idea why. It is baffling."

HID- What is Siamese working on these days?
Jo Champagne- "Right now we are working on new music. We put out an EP last year, and we are hoping to have a full length out in early/mid 2018."

Tickets for this Saturday's show are $8 and they can be purchased here, Doors for the show open at 8 p.m. and all ages are welcome. Each one of these bands is doing something unique and interesting, so get your 8 bucks worth and come out early to catch all of their sets! You wont regret it!

A Weekend of Music & Partying in Birch Run for Dirt Fest 2015

Well, Dirt Fest did it again this year, they put on an a awesome show! It has become sort of a summer ritual at this point to load up the car and drive up I-75 for the day for this festival. This year's Dirt Fest was a little different than the year's past because it took place over 2 days instead of just 1. This allowed the festival to bring out even more acts than in the past and gave us all an excuse to party a little harder and stay the night in Birch Run.
Friday featured a slightly shorter day of music with HELLYEAH (featuring Vinnie Paul of Pantera) headlining and bands like Fear Factory, Coal Chamber and Jasta (from Hatebreed) playing throughout the day. There was only one stage going on Friday, so there wasn't the constant flow of music like usual, but the names were bigger all day long. We had a super fun time taking over the Dirt Fest instagram for the day too, you can check that out here.

On Saturday gates opened earlier in the day at Noon and fans began to pile in. There was a little bit of rain earlier in the day, but that didn't seem to scare anyone away! The headliner for the evening was Down (featuring Phil Anselmo of Pantera), who also did a meet and greet earlier in the day with fans at the InkAddict booth.
All weekend long vendors and Dirt Fest made sure fans had a chance to meet some of the biggest names on the festival, and fans definitely lined up to take full advantage of these opportunities. Some other highlights of Saturday were Detroit's own Child Bite, Kaleido, and Taproot. And of course it's always fun to hang out with everyone from InkAddict and PRTY Crew Collective!
We have to give a HUGE shout out to the Dalton Brother's, their friends & family, Mike Babcock, and everyone that worked behind the scenes to make Dirt Fest successful again this year. A great time was had by all and we can't wait to do it again next year!

The New Place in Detroit to Eat, Drink & Be Social - Punch Bowl Social

The talk of the town has been a new restaurant and gathering place opening up on Broadway in Detroit. The place is called Punch Bowl Social and the few people that have had an exclusive look inside are already raving about it!

Punch Bowl Social says that they are place for you to eat, drink and be social. Not only do they offer awesome food and drinks, but the venue houses all sorts of entertainment, including bowling, darts, ping pong, vintage arcade games, and even private karaoke. I for one am the most excited about the private karaoke. Although I am a hell of a singer and sound just like Zooey Deschanel in my car, I don't quite have the guts to get up on stage in front of a crowd. In front of my friends after a few cocktails though, sounds like a blast! The food end of things is being referred to as a "gastro-diner" with items such as Mac 'N Cheese, Waffles and a Tender Belly Pork Shoulder Frito Pie on the menu. You can check out some photos of food and drinks PBS will be offering on their Facebook here.

Although there was a VIP party over the weekend, the first day that Punch Bowl Social is officially open to the public is this Wednesday, December 10th. They are throwing a huge bash to celebrate their grand opening, with free food and drink samplings (including punch!) and music from Detroit's own Kaleido. Tickets are only $10 and all proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army. That's a pretty great price for food, drinks, music, and you are even helping others! You can pick up your tickets in advance here.

Punch Bowl Social is located at 1331 Broadway in Downtown Detroit. For more details on this awesome new place, like them on Facebook here or head over to PunchBowlSocial.com/Detroit.

Win Tickets to the Kaleido Release Show with Flint Eastwood!

Detroit’s own Kaleido is finally ready to release their latest album called Unbreakable. You can hear their first single “Watch Me Walk Away” and download a copy here. They have teamed up with Flint Eastwood for the albums release party on Saturday, March 29th. There is nothing more inspiring to me than a strong woman and Christina Criss and Jax Anderson are two of the baddest broads around. They both command the stage in a way that only they can and have surrounded themselves with a team of killer musicians to deliver the full package to Detroit next Saturday at the Majestic. Half Light Music and DJ Godfather will also be performing.

Tickets for the show are available for $12 in advance and can be purchased online here.

We also have two pairs of tickets to giveaway to two lucky readers! This time we have hard copies not guest list spots, so we have to do the drawing a little earlier than normal. I will personally draw the winnners a few days before the show and mail out the tickets along with some fun hipindetroit.com swag. To enter, email your full name and address to hipindetroit@gmail.com with Kaleido & Flint Eastwood in the subject line. The show starts at 7 p.m. and all ages are welcome. The Majestic Theatre is located at 4140 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.

Fun Times at Fort Wayne - Oakaloosa 2013

The first ever Oakaloosa Festival took place this past Saturday at the Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit. The festival featured 2 stages with acts ranging from Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The weather wasn't exactly ideal for an outdoor festival, with storms and downpours happening throughout the day. It kept the crowds away for a big chunk of the day and put quite a delay on the main stage. We opted to go to other indoor shows until about 11 p.m. when we caught wind that Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was about to hit the stage and the rain seemed to be done for the night.

First off, Becca and I had never been to Fort Wayne before and most of the stories we had heard were from local ghost hunters MPI. So, I was pretty spooked out walking up to the festival. Way more buildings than I expected and there were obviously ghosts lurking everywhere... well at least in my mind.

Regardless, we walked up and could hear Bone Thugs on the stage and
we both immediately turned "gangsta". I'm not huge on rap, but who doesn't love these guys??? Even if you only like "1st of tha Month", you have to admit that song is pretty much awesome and you sing it to yourself on the first of every month. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony haven't aged a bit and put on a pretty awesome show. Definitely worth going to just to be able to say we've seen a Bone Thugs concert.

Up next was the headliner of the festival, Girl Talk. Only, there was a problem. Due to the delays through out the day, it was almost midnight at this point. There's a curfew in Detroit. So some poor guy got the horrible job of coming over the speakers and announcing that Girl Talk would not be performing for that reason. The crowd of a few hundred were not fans of that idea, but after chanting for long enough apparently the festival decided they didn't care about fines. So Girl Talk hit the stage with a storm of confetti and toilet paper. It was loud. It was fun. It was definitely a bigger party than Fort Wayne had ever seen before. Pretty fuckin' awesome.

Despite the rain and the less than desired numbers in the crowd, from what we saw, this festival was awesome. We really hope that the organizers of this event try to make it happen again in the future. It was a great open space for a show, with a really cool atmosphere of history around you and the Ambassador Bridge and Ren Cen in the distance as a backdrop. For the big acts on the bill, the price of about $50 really wasn't that bad and we loved that they mixed a lot of local acts like Kaleido, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas and The Infatuations in there too. Our only complaints would be that the weather sucked and that we didn't get there sooner. But neither of those are the festivals fault! There were plenty of places to park, even free ones. Beer was pretty cheap. It was clean. It was fun. What more could you ask for in a festival? We hope next year Oakaloosa gives it a try again and can make it even bigger and better than this time around.

Win Tickets to The Big Night Out Tour

Whoever is managing Kaleido is doing a great job. Granted they're a great band with a good looking front lady, but this summer alone they are playing Oakaloosa Music Festival, Warped Tour, and the Detroit date of The Big Night Out Tour which features Fuel, Hoobastank, Alien Ant Farm and Lit. All of these are pretty solid bookings for any band, local or otherwise.
Yesterday we announced we are giving away tickets to Oakaloosa, but we also wanted to give you a chance to catch Kaleido on the Big Night Out Tour. We will be giving away two sets of tickets to two lucky fans. This show will take place on July 25 at the Macomb Music Theatre in Mt. Clemens MI. Doors are at 5:30 p.m. and the music starts promptly at 6:30 p.m. Main floor for this show is $37 and balcony with reserved seating is $32.  Tickets are available at here and 18 plus are welcome. This is your chance to see some heavy hitters alongside an up-and-coming Detroit act. To enter, please email your full name and address to hipindetroit@gmail.com. The winners will be drawn at the end of the week and will receive two tickets in the mail before the show. Good luck!

Win Tickets to Oakaloosa!

Festivals have officially taken over the summer. It seems like every month another one is popping up. Some have been epic failures and some have been successful, but so far all of them have been interesting. Festivals seem to be the wave of the future, some are only one day and some last up to a week. Last month Orion Music & More in Detroit featured both rock, metal and EDM music and brought in a variety of people. I think this model is the way to go to make sure that you pack the place and reach a broader audience. Oakaloosa is taking this idea to a whole new level. They have the most eclectic group of artists performing that I have ever seen. Some of the names that interested me include Girl Talk, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, Royce Da 5' 9", Kaleido, Mike Leslie Band, Of Mice and Musicians, The Infatuations, Bizzare, and Doss the Artist. That's right kids this Saturday, July 27, you can see Bone Thugs-n-Harmony at the same festival with Jessica Hernandez, I think that's pretty cool. For a full list of the lineup click here.
This festival will also be held at a very interesting location. They are re-opening an 1840 era army base called Fort Wayne for the event. The fest is even named after a soldier who served at the base. The purpose or theme of this event is rediscovering whats old and forgotten and transforming it into something entirely new. In fact, a percentage of every dollar earned will go toward the restoration of Fort Wayne. They want to return it to its former glory and will do so with your help and support.

Tickets for this event are $45 in advance, $55 at the door and $65 for VIP access. Considering there will be over 12 hours of music this is one of the lowest priced festivals that I have ever seen. But you know we're going to do better than that. We're going to give you a chance to win two tickets to the festival. We have quite a few pairs to give away and we will be mailing them to the winners before the show. To enter, simply email us at hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line 'Oakaloosa'. Please include your full name and address so that we can send you the tickets if you are one of our lucky winners. If you really want to make sure that you're a winner, you can also tweet, Instagram or Facebook us your entry with the hash tag #Oakaloosa. If you help us get the word out about the festival we will enter your name into the drawing twice, giving you doubling your chance of being one of our lucky winners.

For more information about this festival or to purchase tickets in advance, please visit Oakaloosa.com.

Happy New Year, Bitches!!! Complete guide to Detroit New Year's 2012

Well New Year's Eve is here. If you're anything like me, you have no idea what you're doing tonight. Go out? Stay in? Go to a bar? Go to a party? The questions are endless. Luckily we are making the decision a little easier for you. We perused the interwebs and came up with a list of what we think are the best ways for you to ring in 2013.

New Year's Eve Silver Soiree @ The Magic Stick:
$5 will get you in to both the Magic Stick and Garden Bowl. This party includes music from about 18 bands including Amy Gore & Her Valentines, Patrick Davy & The Ghosts, Replicas, Weed Nap and a bunch of others. It's cheap, you can dress up or dress down and let's be honest, The Magic Stick is probably your home away from home anyways. One of the only down sides we see to this is that it is All Ages, but hey, if you plan to kiss someone that's underage at midnight, that detail might be a plus for you!

Slow Jams New Years Eve:
Slow Jams is already your favorite way to spend a Monday night! Why not spend this Monday night, New Year's Eve, at Woodbridge Pub? Your favorite DJs, Erno the Inferno and EastSide Jon, will be spinning some tunes. Rumor has it they may even be joined by some special guests! It's FREE to get in the door, beers are only $2, there's a champagne toast AND you get to spend the night in the classy, yet laid back setting of Woodbridge Pub. Sounds like a good idea to us!

The Ball at The Hall with Kaleido:
While Slow Jams will be a little bit more of a laid back evening, we're pretty sure The Ball at The Hall will be a bit crazier! Kaleido will be taking the stage at St. Andrew's Hall for a huge party put on by Live Nation and 98.7. If you're looking for a little more intense party, this is probably the place to be. Kaleido will put on an awesome show and there will be DJs in St. Andrew's and The Shelter all night long (a little different than the DJs at Slow Jams though). $25 get's you in the door and you might have a chance to score some of that $$$ back because they are doing a  cash balloon drop at midnight.

Nude Photo NYE: Detroit:
So, we don't know a whole lot about this one, but judging by the flyer, we know we like it. Can't really go wrong with a nude picture of Marilyn!  The party's being put on by the guys from Sexual Tension Detroit with music provided by Secrets, Jerry Downey and Dr. Disko Dust. It's happening at The Temple Bar, it's only $5 to get in, and it goes all night long, from 10 p.m. - 4 a.m. Even if you don't want to make this your only stop for the night, definitely keep it in mind for some late night dancing! This party is only for those 21 and up though!

Twistin' Tarantuals New Year's Eve at the New Way:
Well, many of our followers live in the Ferndale area, so this might be a good option for you guys! This Rockabilly Trio will be bringin' out their stand-up bass and greasin' up their pompadours to ring in the New Year with you. Good music, close to home and only 7 bux.

Mac's Bar Goddamn New Year's Eve with The Goddamn Gallows:
Another option if you're looking to see a great band on NYE. The Goddamn Gallows put on one hell of a show and Mac's Bar is a pretty awesome place, but you'll have to trek it out to Lansing for this one. The Devils Cut and The Hunky Newcomers will also be hitting the stage. It's only $10 to get in and 18+ are welcome.

Melvin Davis @ Cliff Bell's:
If you're looking for a little classier New Year's Eve, this is probably your best bet. Melvin Davis & the United Sound will be performing their legendary 60's soul from 10 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. There's only a $20 cover charge, which includes a champagne toast. Or, if you're looking to make a night of it, you can also get a 4 course dinner for the ticket price of $60, which is served from 7 - 11 p.m. Sounds like a fun reason to be fancy for the night!

Of course these aren't all of the parties going on around town, just the ones that popped out at us. Most of your bars will probably be having a champagne toast or you can stay at home and have a bottle of champagne all to yourself! Wherever you end up, we hope you all have a fun, stress free New Year's Eve and we can't wait to party with all of you in 2013!

Congrats to Kaleido!

This past Friday at The Magic Stick, Kaleido unleashed their first EP onto the world and began a whirlwind weekend that included lead singer Christina Chriss preforming on stage Saturday night with Paradime during the Big Sean show and flying out to NYC Monday morning to be on Shade 45 and open a new club in the city. The show was packed! They had two opening acts and a DJ to play inbetween sets and get the crowd ready for Kaledio to take the stage at around 11 p.m. that night. They played for well over an hour and spent another hour and half signing autographs, taking pictures and meeting with their fans.

We were lucky enough to get invited back stage while the band was getting ready to catch up with our friends before they took the stage. There was an air of excitement and nervous energy in the room; after all they had been waiting for this moment for "27 years" as one of the members pointed out. This is a band that is just beginning their journey and we are so happy to be part of it.

We got a chance to discuss where they have been, where they are going and me and Christina’s obsession with Sally Hansen nail decals (you catch her doing her own nails and hair before the show, no divas here). Kudos to the band for killing it on stage and Kristina for looking amazing in that skeleton backed shirt ( I need one!). Check out what they had to say and make sure to download the new self-titled EP on iTunes!

Kaleido is releasing their first EP on November 30th at The Magic Stick in Detroit. We caught up with the band about a month before the show and made a little video to show all of you how they are preparing to play.

Nothing like pizza and bowling to help get your band into tip top shape!

Pizza, Push-ups and Preparing to Rock With Kaleido

Our website was officially launched this past January when we posted our first article about the release party for the second season of Solid Dudes Kitchen. We wrote our post, added our pictures and launched ourselves into the blogging world. Unofficially, the process for launching the site started years earlier and included schooling in writing, video and sound along with a lot of planning and preparation. To the naked eye, Hip came out of nowhere, but to those in the know it was something that all of us had been working towards for years.
I feel that this same unfair tag has been applied to Kaleido. When I was at Motors and Music this year I overheard the crowd talking about the band that seemed to have come out of nowhere. Kaleido performed during Tigers games this summer and Christina Chriss sang the opening anthem for the Pistons this fall. Christina was heard on Sirius 101’s Farrell show and she performs acoustically with Joey Fava (from Kaleido) all over the town.

Kaleido did not come out of nowhere, but instead was the next step in a long process of learning and growth that has fine tuned the talent of those in the band and brought them to where they are today, about to release their first EP. Their success and accomplishments came from hard work and not giving up on their dreams. They are by no means an overnight sensation.

Kaleido was formed in October of 2011 and was originally a four piece consisting of Christina Chriss, Joey Fava, Ronnie Rosolino and Cody Morales. Six months in they also added Jamie Allen Burnham as a second guitarist. As a five piece, they joined Warped Tour this summer and began recording their first EP.

They booked their release show for almost one year after the conception of the band. It is amazing to see what they were able to do in one year. They are scheduled to release their EP and play a live show at the Magic Stick on November 30th. We are excited to announce that we got to catch up with the band and see how they were getting ready for this momentous occasion.

You can check out some of their music here and purchase tickets for the EP release at embarcoentertainment.com. We look forward to interviewing the band and celebrating this release with all of you. Check back before the show for further updates and even a giveaway!

Are You Ready For Some Arts, Beats AND Eats?

Labor Day weekend is always hectic around here and this year is no different. In addition to the many festivals and shows going on this weekend, it's also Arts Beats and Eats.
The festival is in it's 15th year now and has over 200 performers on 10 stages, over 100 local artists and best of all- tons of food! Arts Beats and Eats will be going on Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.

As for the beats part of the weekend, there are quite a few bands worth checking out. A few of the bands we can't wait to see are: Mayor Hawthorne, G Love & Special Sauce, Morris Day & The Time, The Sights, Kaleido and The Twistin' Tarantulas. You can go here to see showtimes and a list of the other bands playing.

The art will be located in the same place again this year, in the southern part of the festival. For the eats, there will be a lot of the old favorites present, but some new ones as well. Plus, BBQ alley! For a full list of the food that will be served, you can go here.

A few years ago they added an admission fee to get in to Arts Beats and Eats, but luckily it was only $3. However this year, it will be $3 until 5 p.m., when it will become $5. The admission fee does go toward good things at least, like Art Advocacy and different charities.

Hope to see you all around this weekend!

The Scenery Tonight At Rack And Roll!

I was so excited when The Scenery got added on to Dirt Fest this year, but August 11 is still a week away. For some that may be too long to wait to see them play live. The good news is if you do not have plans tonight (Saturday), you can see them and pick up there new EP, “It’s Only Weather”, which is being released at the show.
The show is at Rack and Roll today, August 4th at 8 p.m. The Scenery will be playing alongside Kaleido, A Hero Falls and Fighting Lights. Tickets are only $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Rack and Roll is located at 13632 Sibley Rd Riverview Michigan. The show is all ages and there is beer and liquor available for purchase for those that are 21 and over.

I ran into Jennica, one of the 5 members of the band (Jennica Wahl, Anthony Daraban, Mike Freeland, Russle Hatfield, and Matt Daraban), on Thursday night and she told me that there is a lot in store for this show including lights and maybe even a little balloon drop! If you are free Saturday I highly suggest that you consider spending your evening with this wonderful band!
