Record Store Day 2019 is this Saturday, April 13th and there's no doubt that there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of music enthusiasts lined up outside of all of the stores around town. Some will be trying to get their paws on this year's RSD exclusives, while others are there just to take advantage of the sales that most stores are having. To make your Record Store Day a little easier, we made a list of some of the best stores around Metro Detroit and what they will be offering. Some will have live music, some will have great deals, and some will have free food. Decide for yourself which stores have the most to offer.

Third Man Records (Detroit): Detroit's own Bars of Gold will be playing a live set at Third Man Records Cass Corridor this Saturday! The band has a new album SHELTERS being released the day before. They hit the stage around 4 p.m. Later that night, the Freep Film Festival proudly presents "Fire Music" followed by an intimate talk with the creators and subjects of the film. You bet your ass that Third Man will have some awesome releases too, including the TMRxCrosley triple inchophone and six The White Stripes singles preciously unavailable on 3” vinyl.

Trax-N-Wax (St. Clair Shores): This is possibly the biggest RSD bash in the area. There will be 13 bands playing throughout the day, Motor City Juke Joint will be streaming live, and there will be an in-store signing by ABK of Psychopathic Records. Some of the highlights for the day include sets by VNESSWOLFCHILD, Girl Fight, and Leaving Lifted. See the full lineup here. Celebrate 4 Years of Found Sound

This Saturday, July 23rd Found Sound is throwing a party! It has been four years since this amazing record store opened its doors in Ferndale. In honor of their anniversary they are throwing another one of their awesome free shows!

The lineup for this Saturday includes Sros Lords and Pink Lightning. It has been a minute since we've all heard from Pink Lightning, but over the last few months they started playing shows again. They also debuted a new lineup which you may have seen at Corktown Strut a couple of weeks ago. They always put on a great show, as does Sros Lords. This is a great opportunity to see both in one place. Plus, it's free! You can't really beat that!

Doors are set to open at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sros Lords will kick things off at 9 p.m. Found Sound is located at 234 W. 9 Mile in Ferndale.

Happy Anniversary, Found Sound! Here's to many more!

HID's Top 5 Places to Shop on Record Store Day 2016

This Saturday is one of the best days of the year! It's Record Store Day! Music lovers and vinyl collectors will fill their local record stores to get their hands on deals and special releases. Some of this year's highlighted RSD releases include David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World, GWAR - Scumdogs of The Universe, Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bullocks Here's The Sex Pistols, and of course, Justin Bieber - Purpose. The list is pretty wide spreading and has something that everyone will be excited about, you can check it out here.

In the past we've given you a run through of what is going on at pretty much every record store in Metro Detroit. Well, this year we decided to just give you our top 5 picks for record store day! Whether you decide to go to one of these shops on Saturday or a different one, all that matters is that you get out there and support your local record store!

So, without any further ado, here's our top 5...

#5 - Stormy Records - 13936 Michigan Ave., Dearborn
This store is keeping it simple on Record Store Day. It's already a great shop, they'll have some of the exclusive releases, and they aren't doing any holds. Not too much out of the ordinary going on this Saturday, but here's the reason they made our list... their Facebook event said they will have a special thanks for everyone that supports them all year long. What could it be? It's so suspenseful! A discount? A free snack? A tiny toy elephant? The possibilities are endless! But, if you're loyal to Stormy, you definitely want to stop in on Saturday and see what the surprise is!

#4 - Detroit Threads - 10238 Jos Campau, Hamtramck
Detroit Techno Militia is taking over Detroit Threads this Saturday! They are bringing DJs out to perform all day long in the shop. The lineup includes DJ Psycho, Annix, Neil V, Brent Scudder, Izzie, Bileebob, Kip & Bethany as Namizdat, Todd Weston & Ava (Daddy/Daughter Set), Stephen James, DJ Roach, Marshall Applewhite and Ryan Start. The shop is set to open at Noon and will stay open until 10 p.m. They will be bbq-ing out front and the entire day will be broadcasted live on Detroit Burst Radio!

#3 - UHF - 512 S. Washington, Royal Oak
Here's where things get a little tough. The next three stores all have great shows going on throughout the day. UHF has an awesome lineup, with Bastardous playing at 2 p.m., John Krautner at 3, and Voyag3r at 4 p.m. They are already one of our favorite record stores around, and they'll be featuring some great music throughout the day! UHF is sure to have a ton of your favorite RSD releases, so make sure to stay tuned to their Facebook page where they will be posting what releases they have. Opening nice and early at 9 a.m.!

#2 - Found Sound - 234 W. 9 Mile,  Ferndale
Found Sound will be open all day long, but they're waiting to party at night! They have an awesome show lined up, with things kicking off at 8 p.m. The night will include music from Devious Ones, The Cheetahs and Prude Boys! This would be a great lineup at any venue, but pair it with Record Store Day and it's at Found Sound, that is solid all the way around.

#1 - Weirdsville - 61 Macomb Pl., Mt. Clemens
Yeah, we know, Mt. Clemens is a bit of a hike for some of you, but Weirdsville is making it well worth the trip. Not only will they have a great selection of RSD releases, but they are offering all sorts of bonuses. They're opening their doors up early, at 9 a.m. The first 15 people in line will receive a RSD promo bag. They will also have free coffee and doughnuts (while supplies last). Once you get in the doors all used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and DVDs are 20% off, which is worth coming out for even if you don't want a special RSD album. On top of that, if you spend $75 or more (which shouldn't be hard to do), you will receive a FREE 2016 Weirdsville Record Store Day shirt! As if all of these deals aren't enough, there will also be live music from Emily Rose, Those Hounds, and more! Sounds like an awesome day! Great deals, live music, and free doughnuts is why Weirdsville is our number 1 pick for Record Store Day 2016!

Record Store Day 2015

Record Store Day 2015 is this Saturday, April 18th! The event was created to get people in to their local independent record stores and also to promote the culture of records and these stores. Over the past 8 years it has grown immensely, with tons of exclusive RSD albums being released every year and record stores holding all sorts of events, basically making a party out of it.

The Metro Detroit area has some great stores, many of which have promotions and events going on this Saturday for RSD. Here's a list of a few of the stores with activities going on this Saturday.

Flipside Records:
Doors open at 10 a.m. with Free Promos, 20% Off All Used Music, Video Games, DVDs/Blu Rays & MORE! There will also be live music from Charming Relative , Remnose & 1592!

UHF Records:
This shop will also have in-store performances in the afternoon from Moonwalks, Danny Kroha and The Muggs! There will also be a Third Man Records Roulette Wheel on site. Anyone that purchases 3 records from TMR will get a chance to spin the wheel and win records, tickets, merchandise, and more! Head over to UHF's Facebook page on Friday after 4 p.m. to see a list of what RSD releases they will have in stock.

Lo & Behold:
Lo & Behold in Hamtramck is doing things a little different for RSD. They have teamed up with Girls Rock Detroit for a Meet & Greet. The event will feature a Children's Jam Session, Folk Songs & Stories, performances by Molly Jean, Tony Paris and Dave Morrison, a raffle drawing and food and drinks. The Girls Rock crew will be on site spreading the word about their first Rock N Roll Summer Camp too. The fun happens from 2-7 p.m.

Stormy Records:
It's all about the music at Stormy Records! They will have some RSD selections in stock, but they are focusing more on the great used records that they sell every day. They have some that they have been saving just for this day and they will also have 4 crates of $2 "solid rock n roll titles".

Weirdsville Records:
Our good friends from HYPE Screen Printing will be in house slinging shirts to anyone that spends $75+! The store will also offer 20% off all used vinyl, cassettes, CDs and DVD, Those Hounds will play live and Andy Garcia is DJing throughout the day!

Melodies & Memories:
Get to this shop early and you will get a free doughnut and some orange juice! Sounds like reason enough to make this your first stop! Jett Plastic Recordings will be on site with their special RSD release, from Macaulay Culkin's band The Pizza Underground. Kenny Tudrick will also perform live.

Found Sound:
Found Sound will be hosting a hell of a show at the end of Record Store Day! The lineup includes The Beggars, Duende!, Deadly Vipers and The Scrappers. The music starts at 8 p.m. and goes to Midnight, and admission is always FREE!

There are quite a few other record stores throughout Metro Detroit that aren't on this list, but these are the ones that we heard were going above and beyond the normal RSD releases. Speaking of RSD releases, for a full list of what is being released click here. You can even download a pdf of the list here. Wherever you end up this Record Store Day, the important thing is to get out there and support your local record store. Afterall, they are the best stores around!

Record Store Day 2014 Is Finally Here!!!

There's something about the way a record sounds that makes it different than any other music recording. It's like it is the way music is supposed to sound. That's part of the reason why this form of media has become hugely popular again over the years. Plus, records just look cool. The sleeves, the different colors of vinyl, albums make great collection pieces. Some might argue that it's just a trend, but you don't see many 8 tracks around and this cassette tape revival doesn't seem to be as successful. Not to mention, there's not a whole day dedicated to CDs or MP3s, but we all know there is one for Records! And that day is coming up this Saturday!

Record Store Day 2014 is on Saturday, April 19th. The day is actually about getting out and supporting your local record store, but if it weren't for records this day wouldn't exist. On record store day fans line up at their local shop to pick up exclusive Record Store Day releases and get great deals on everyday albums. Some of the exclusive releases this year include Between The Buried and Me - Colors_Live, David Bowie - 1984 Picture Disc, Chiodos - R2ME/Let Me Get You A Towel, a Circa Survive and Sunny Day Real Estate Split, another Split from Clutch and Lionize, The Cure and Dinosaur Jr., Green Day - Demolicious, OFF! - Learn to Obey, and The Ramones - Meltdown with The Ramones. Even Katy Perry is getting in on the Record Store Day action with a release! You can check out the long list of albums here.

In addition to all of the great records being released this Saturday, many of our local record stores have in store specials and events going on. Here's a list of some of the happenings that stuck out to us.

Hello Records - 1459 Bagley, Detroit: This mostly used record store is offering an awesome deal for their customers. You can get 50% off their entire stock and their $1 Singles will be 3 for $1! Plus they will have DJ Dez and Jeedo X live in the store along with Black Milk. If that isn't enough, they will also have food in the shop from St. Cece's and Motor City Brewing Works! Sounds like a party!

Weirdsville Records - 36 New Street, Mt. Clemens:
This shop will have
a bunch of the Record Store Day releases and on top of that they are offering 20% off all used vinyl, CDs, DVDs and cassettes. They'll also have some awesome in-store performances from Emily Rose, Caveman Woodman & Bam Bam Moss and Tobin Sterritt. On top of all of that, if you spend $50 or more, you'll snag a free shirt too!

UHF - 512 S. Washington, Royal Oak: It's no secret that UHF is one of our favorite record stores. But, besides that, they have some great reasons for you to head out to their shop on Saturday. They will have a ton of the exclusive releases and performances by Voyag3r, Oscillating Fan Club, Feelings and Caveman Woodman. That Caveman sure is getting around on Saturday!

Record Graveyard - 2610 Carpenter St., Hamtramck:
This store might not have the glitz and the glam that some of the others are offering up on Record Store Day, but they have an awesome used collection! Plus, they are offering 20% off everything with a coupon you can grab here. Can't beat that!

Found Sound - 234 W. 9 Mile, Ferndale:
This is another shop that's doin' it up big time on Saturday. They will have some of the RSD releases and live music. Jeecy & The Jungle, Zombie Jesus & The Chocolate Sunshine Band, Scott Masson and Wicker Chairs will be performing in the store, while Pancho Villa's Skull will be playing outside the store throughout the day!

Flipside Records - 41 E. 14 Mile, Clawson:
Flipside will always hold a special place in our hearts as it is one of the only record stores still around that we went to as kids. They will be offering 20% off their collection of used LPs, movies, video games and systems, cassettes, and most toys. Plus they will have a bunch of free stuff they are giving away throughout the day. You can check out the freebies they are offering here.

Stormy Records - 13210 Michigan Ave., Dearborn: The folks over at Stormy Records want every day to be record store day! They pride themselves on bringing you some of the best music every day of the year. So, this Saturday they will continue to do that, but will have some of the RSD releases. Better yet, they will have some awesome used collectible vinyl that you probably won't be able to get your hands on anywhere else!

There are quite a few other great record stores out there too! So wherever you go, we hope you pick up some great new albums and some good old ones too! Shop local and support your local record stores! Happy Record Store Day!!!

Mountain Babies - "Shouts" - New Music Worth Checking Out

We receive a lot of music at Hip In Detroit that people ask us to check out or do a review on. It's really hard to follow up on it all, but sometimes we get something that sticks out from the rest for one reason or another. That's exactly what happened last week when we were sent a link to the new Mountain Babies album Shouts.
Mountain Babies is a folk band/musician from the Port Huron area. I phrase it as "band/musician" because it's actually one guy, Dave Peters, who sometimes has other musicians play or sing with him, but it is mainly just him. He has a great voice and an amazing sound. Shouts is by no means his first release, but this is the album that put him on our radar.

The album consists of 7 songs, each with a slightly different sound. Some are upbeat while others are a bit more off kilter with a somewhat eerie feeling. The topics this singer/songwriter covers in his lyrics range from love to anger to nature, and some even have a storytelling element. Even if you aren't a person that gets into lyrics, the music end of it is great. Plus, Dave's voice has quite the range, he even reminded me of Johnny Cash at a couple of points. Perfect album to check out if you are feeling a little more chill or looking for something out of the ordinary. Definitely worth a listen and we think quite a few of you are going to like what you hear.

Shouts is available now as a "Name Your Price" download on Mountain Babies' bandcamp here. It is also being released on cassette today by ZZZTapes. This is the same label that has released albums from Touch (of North America) and SNAFU, amongst others. If you are interested in picking up a tape, head over to zzztapes.com or you can grab one at Found Sound in Ferndale.

Happy Anniversary Found Sound!

This must be the time of year for great minds to give birth to great ideas. We mentioned the other day that Toepfer House is turning 2 on Friday. Well, this Saturday everyone's favorite Ferndale record store is turning 1 year old! Found Sound will be celebrating 1 year of existence with one of their ever so popular free shows as well as some deals for their loyal shoppers.

First off, the shop is opening at 11 a.m. and will be giving out free cookies to the first 100 people through the door. We're not sure exactly what kind of cookies their giving away, but it's a cookie and it's free... just take it. All day long they are offering 10% off all new merchandise and 25% off the used stuff (and they have a pretty large collection of good used stuff if you've never been there). Once 8 p.m. rolls around, the shop will hold host to a show featuring the legendary Andre Williams, Oscillating Fan Club, Sheefy McFly, J. Walker & The Crossguards and Caveman Woodman. This sounds like the perfect show for before, after, or when you need a break from Pig & Whiskey.

Even if you can't make it to the show, head over during the day and buy yourself some records. You've worked hard all week! You deserve it! And while you're there make sure you wish the shop and the guys that work there a Happy 1st Anniversary. We hope they have many more to come!

Ferndale Pride is Almost Here!

This Saturday in Ferndale is going to be a crazy one! In case you don't already know, June 1 is Ferndale Pride Day! If you're not sure what that is, Ferndale Pride strives to recognize and promote pride for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and ally communities. Each year they have a festival to celebrate and promote diversity in the community. The festival includes tons of events like the Rainbow Run, food, music, bar/club events and lots more!

The festival officially begins at noon on Saturday with a rainbow balloon release, which is the finale to the run. The Rainbow Run is organized by the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce and is expected to bring in 1,000 participants. You can run or walk in it through Ferndale's neighborhoods. For more info on the run and to register, you can go here.

The street festival part of the day will take place on West Nine Mile and will go until 9 p.m. Some of the musicians that will be performing that day are My Pal Val, Chris Anthem, and All Day Monday. Feel free to bring the kids! There will be a children's activity area for them to have some fun as well. You can also catch a few speakers at 2:30 p.m. on the main stage. The speakers will include Jason Krzysiak and Ann Perry, Pleasant Ridge City Commissioners that were leaders in passing a human right's ordinance recently.

Speaking of music, if you need a little break from the festivities and want to head inside for a bit, you should check out the benefit at Found Sound. Starting at 6 p.m. there will be a show benefiting the Ruth Ellis Center, which is an LGBTQ shelter in Detroit. They are the only mission specific agency in the entire midwest that are dedicated to LGBTQ youth so it's a great cause to support. The event is sponsored by the Seaholm Gay-Straight Alliance and will feature some pretty great bands. The Flaks, Fires in Japan, Five Star Hotel, Matt Wixson's Flying Circus and Carmel Liburdi will all be playing. Just a warning, this is a school-sanctioned event, so leave the booze outside, no substances allowed. Cover for this show is only $5 and all proceeds go to the Center.

Saturday should be a great day full of support and lots of fun. Ferndale Pride only comes once a year so go crazy!

Record Store Day 2013 Is Almost Here!!!

This Saturday, April 20, is Record Store Day 2013! Record Store Day started in 2007 by a group of independent record store owners and employees who wanted to spread the word about the unique culture that surrounds the stores. On this day every year independently owned record stores come together to celebrate with artists and special releases.

In recent years record stores have started to pop back up and it's awesome! There are a decent amount of stores in the metro Detroit area that are participating this Saturday. UHF, Flipside, Found Sound and Hybrid Moments are just few of our favorites. To see the full list of participating stores, click here.

The stores will also have some special performances in celebration of the holiday.

UHF in Royal Oak will be open from 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. and will have performances by Timmy's Organism and The Henchmen. They have also ordered 'a shiite load' of every limited edition Record Store Day release that is offered. UHF will also have a pop-up shop at Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s show at the Majestic that night.

Found Sound in Ferndale will have performances by Passalacqua, FAWN, Pink Lightning, Lord Scrummage and Daher-Malis Duo. The store will have extended hours all weekend, opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday and staying open late for the performances. There will also be tons of special RSD releases available. Found Sound is not just celebrating on Saturday though. They will have shows the rest of the weekend, too. There is a jazz performance at 7 p.m. on Friday and a screening of the film "Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park" at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to the free shows going on, there are of course all of the special releases. A couple of the ones we are looking forward to are The Hounds Below/Flint Eastwood/FUR/Fawn 4-way split and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s Patterns EP that includes 2 special remixes. Click here to see a full list of all the special Record Store Day releases.

These are just a few of the awesome things to look forward to at Record Store Day 2013! You can always visit the official website here for more info.
