Win Tickets to Van Halentine's Day VII with The Beggars

For the eighth year in a row, the best Van Halen tribute band in the world will be making a visit to Detroit to celebrate Van Halentine's Day with all the rock and roll lovers. Panama is not a cover band, this is a tribute band, which means if you let yourself believe that you're seeing VH in their peak, you will most likely be able to believe it.

The best part of this year's performance is that they are having The Beggars open the show. This Detroit based rock and roll band is well known for making a room move and will no doubt be the perfect act to get the crowd going before Panama comes out and slays.

Tickets to attend this event are only $15 in advance and they can be purchased here. We also have one pair of tickets to attend the show with a friend or lover. If you would like to enter to win a pair of tickets to attend this year's show, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #vanhalentines. We will draw one lucky person this Saturday morning and they will be on the guest list plus one that night! This year's show takes place on February 10th at 8 p.m. at The Magic Bag.

Mike Stanley Wants to Make You Laugh

Detroit has always been known for our music and over the last few years we have become a major player in the art world, but did you know that we are also have our own growing comedy scene? Detroit has a growing comedy scene in the city, we even have a few comedians that have started to make a name for Detroit on the national level,  one of those comedians is Mike Stanley.

A quick google search of Mike will get you laughing in no time. There are a tons of videos on the internet that you can watch and he has a comedy album called Shiner that you can download here. Mike was a part of the Detroit comedy scene before he started regularly touring on a national level. He will be returning to Detroit to perform this weekend, so we reached out to learn more about the local and national comedy scene as well as his personal journey with comedy. Check out our interview with him and head over here to purchase a pair of tickets to see him perform live at The Magic Bag this Saturday, July 8th! Tickets are only $10 in advance, which makes this the perfect place to take a date this weekend!

HID- How old were you when you started doing standup?
Mike Stanley- "Well, the first time I did stand up I was 11 in Jr. High at our school's talent show. I've always loved it and it was something that was always prevalent in our house growing up. I did a bunch of Steven Wright jokes. What a hack, right!? I should have tapped into my life experiences of drawing Batman and hoping to find discarded porn mags in public parks. I've always wrote but didn't really begin performing until around 03' or 04'."

HID- What was your first gig?
Mike Stanley- "I'm pretty sure my first paid gig was in Canada. Another more established comedian took me there to open for him and they began booking me regularly. I remember being really excited about the pay then coming back across the border and realizing that I didn't really make that much because the exchange rate was different back then, American currency was worth a lot more."

HID- How do you write your material? Do you write it throughout the day or block off a time to write?
Mike Stanley- "Both. I'm constantly driving or flying so the act of actually sitting down to write has to wait until I'm in a hotel for a few days. I usually start with the punchline (the thing I find most absurd/funny) scribble it down, then build the story around it. I like all the different forms stand up. Long form, storytelling, quick fast set-up-punchline twist, one liners, so depending on how in depth the subject matter is, it's directly related to the amount of time I have to spend on the joke to convey the message to the audience properly and make it funny. After SHINER came out (my latest album) I wanted to switch up my style a bit and see how many quick jokes I could hammer out on stage in a short period of time. I like trying new things and riffing on stage too. I'm not a big fan of crowd work. But riffing and adding tags to jokes while on stage helps keep me in the moment."

HID- How do you get over stage fright?
Mike Stanley- "I don't often get stage fright. There's a bit of anxiousness, the wanting to get up and the first laugh out of the way, but I wouldn't say it's fear. I do a lot of pacing before shows. I probably look like a maniac. Hahaha."

HID- Is performing stand up in Detroit different than others cities? How?
Mike Stanley- "It's not really anymore. Surrounding areas, yeah. Detroit itself is dope as fuck now so the shows and crowds (specifically people that come to see me) are open minded and already know what they're getting into. It's when you start getting into the bullshit garbage Trump supporting areas where everyone has a problem. That's a Midwest thing though. It's not exclusive to MI."

HID- Who are your comedy heroes and why?
Mike Stanley- "Well, George Carlin has been and always will be my favorite comedian. I don't know that there's ever been a more important or visceral performer.

Compartmentally, yeah he will have an incredibly well written/delivered piece where he's attacking specific issues, but when all added up it's more of an overview of the trivial social constructs we, as humans have created for ourselves. Religion, Banks, Politicians, Weapons, Racism - All of these things are ingrained into american culture and used for leverage with such reckless abandonment. Carlin had a way of saying "Who the fuck are we? Why are tap dancing around this shit and lying to ourselves? Quit being a fucking idiot!" He would have these brilliant, long form diatribes about politics then a minute later tell the funniest fart joke you've ever heard. There's something to be said about being hilarious enough to deliver on that spectrum.

He would be losing his shit with what's going on today with "President Toupee Fiasco."

I've been lucky enough to do shows with a lot of the comics I've looked up to. Robin Williams, Dave Attell, Jim Jeffries, Chappelle."

HID- Where can we go to find cool comedy around Detroit?
Mike Stanley- "Go to Detroit Comedy Underground on Sundays at the Park Bar. That's the show I started with Billy Zakolski (Motor City Improv) and it's been running for 2 years now. It's really great and I'm really proud of what we've done there. We get comics from all over, New York, LA, Chicago, Down south as well as the best local talent. Channel 4 votes it the best place to see stand up and I'm really proud of what we've accomplished here. It's $7 and doors are at 7:30. We get Comedy Central acts regularly. People that have done sets on Late Night shows. You seriously can't beat it. It's a blast."

HID- Are there any other local comedians we should be paying attention to?
Mike Stanley- "Absolutely. The scene has grown so much over the past two years it's crazy. Bret Hayden, Kyle Forsyth, Blain Hill, Brett Mercer, Ken Witzgall, Heather Jay these are all of the comics that help produce DCU and they're all incredibly funny.

Other favorites are Dave Landau, Laura Witkowski, Melanie Hearn, Josh Adams, Will Green, Robert Jenkins, Pat Seivert, Taylor De La Ossa, Mark Roebuck and Dan Currie, Adam Degi and Wes Ward. These comics are all over Michigan but are regular staples in our room. Check them out and book them on everything!"

Party with White Shag at The Magic Bag TONIGHT!

Tonight White Shag is taking over The Magic Bag in Ferndale for their big record release show! The band is celebrating the release of their new self titled album, which is actually the first full length from the band. You can get a little preview of the album by listening to their song "I Want You" on Rob Reinhart's Essential Music on WDET here. (The song starts at about 1:30:00.) The band has also been doing a lot of podcasts and appearances to get ready for this big release. So make sure you head over to their Facebook here to check those out.

Since White Shag is such a kick ass band, they had to come up with a pretty kick ass lineup to share the stage with them for this big release. They have invited The Beggars and DIRTWOLF to come out and party with them, making for one of the best lineups we've seen in a while! The party is set to start at 8 p.m. Friday night and it's only $10 to get in the door. For more details on this show, head over to the Facebook event page here.

Win Tickets to see Guns N' Hoses - an All Female Guns N' Roses Tribute Band

I'm a sucker for a great tribute band, especially when it's an all female lineup. On Friday, May 1st Guns N' Hoses will be coming to The Magic Bag alongside Stiff Competition. Guns N' Hoses is one of those great tribute bands that really appreciates the music that they play, they do a lot more than imitate the original. The ladies were recently named the best tribute band in New York by the Village Voice and Slash himself recently tweeted his approval after catching a rehearsal. I mean the band's tag line is "Welcome to the Vajungle", that in itself is pretty bad ass.

A Cheap Trick tribute band called Stiff Competition will be opening the show and tickets are only $12 in advance. They can be purchased here. We also have three pairs of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of The Magic Bag. To enter to win, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with Guns N' Hoses in the subject line. We will draw the winners the day before the show and email them details on how to claim their prize.

Check out this video of the ladies playing at the Bowery Ballroom. We guarantee after you see it you'll want to catch the live show yourself!

We Are Twisted Fucking Sister: The Movie

Twisted Sister is one of those bands that both intrigued me and kind of scared me as a child. Every time I heard their hit song "We're Not Gonna Take It" I couldn't help but get up and dance and belt out the powerful lyrics. But, when I saw their music videos I could not understand why these men were rocking bigger hair and better lipstick than any of the women I knew. I was a "good Christian" girl and I just didn't get it. Years later, I fell in love with this band after hearing front man Dee Snider on The Howard Stern show in the late '90s. Dee was so charming and so bad ass during his chat with Howard that I had to go back and give the band a listen. I not only fell in love with their music, but I finally understood the history and significance behind their no bullshit cross dressing persona. They are one of those bands that did something different and interesting. So interesting, that documentary film maker Andrew Horn decided to make a movie about the band.

This documentary, We Are Twisted Fucking Sister, tells the story or the rise and fall of Twisted Sister, and is getting rave reviews across the board.  It premiered in other places over the last few weeks and it will premiere in Detroit this Friday, January 9th at The Magic Bag in Ferndale. This sneak peak is also a fundraiser for the film, you will be one of the first people to lay eyes on the film if you head out this Friday! Doors for the show are at 8 p.m. and the movie will start at 9 p.m. Tickets for this special Brew & View are only $7 dollars in advance and can be purchased here. We also have three sets of tickets to giveaway thanks to our friends over at The Magic Bag. To enter to win these tickets, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with Twisted Fucking Sister in the subject line. We will draw our winners on Friday morning.

Win Tickets for a Night of Comedy at The Magic Bag!!!

We all know that MTV isn't what it used to be. What was once a channel you could turn to to find your favorite new band, is now full of reality shows and sitcoms. But, the shows aren't all bad, and they are all very addicting. You have to admit, there has been a time or two that you have caught yourself watching "Catfish" for hours on end.

Well, this Friday you have a chance to catch a funny man that you may have seen a time or two on MTV. His name is Giulio Gallarotti and he is best known for his appearances on MTV's "Totally Clueless", "Girl Code" and for his stand up comedy. He performs on stage nearly every night in different clubs throughout New York City, but he is making the trek to Michigan to perform at The Magic Bag in Ferndale for one night only. He isn't even on tour, he just must love Michigan that much!

Joining Giulio on stage is Ricky Velez, another young stand up comedian that is making his name known. He is a native New Yorker who also performs frequently in the city, but has played on both coasts and at quite a few places in between.

Feast Your Eyes on the Funniest Videos Around @ The Found Footage Festival

This Wednesday at The Magic Bag you have a chance to check out what might be the best film festival of all time. It is called The Found Footage Festival and it features some of the most amazing videos ever captured, EVER!

The Found Footage Festival has been around for quite a while now. This is actually the 7th round, with the first in 2004. Personally, I had never heard of this amazing event until my friend mentioned it to me this weekend. Here is the basic jist, curators Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher collect awesome videos that they find at garage sales, thrift stores, etc. or that people find and send their way. They share many on their website here, but they also take their videos on the road and share them with audiences across the country. Some are super funny while others are just straight up bizarre. During their tours they provide commentary and updates on the stars of their videos. If you check out their site, you will find that the videos are reason enough to head to the fest. But, the fact that Joe & Nick will also be at the event is quite appealing. Part of the reason I say this is because these are the guys that pulled off the hilarious Kenny "K-Strass" Yo-Yo Master pranks, along with Kenny of course. This is one of my all time favorite videos. If you don't know what I'm referring to, do yourself a favor and check out a clip below.

And, because it is the Found Footage Festival, here is one of the best videos that I found through the Found Footage site.

If you are ready for a night of comedy gold and some of best productions ever made, you can pick up your tickets for the FFF here. Tickets are only $10 in advance or $12 the day of the show. It is all happening this Wednesday, December 17th at 8 p.m. and 18 and up are welcome. The Magic Bag is located at 22920 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale. For more details on this event, click here.
