Check out Queen Kwong wsg Tart, George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus and Those Hounds at The Loving Touch

Queen Kwong has been compared to everyone from Queens of the Stone age to Hole. Front women CarrĂ© Callaway is one of those performers that leaves a strong impression on people. In fact, she began her career at 17 by opening for NIN on the 2005 With Teeth tour. The best part is she was hand picked by Trent Reznor himself.

She formed Queen Kwong in 2009 and the band released their latest album Get a Witness this past August. You can check out their tunes here. Or, you can see them preform live at The Loving Touch alongside some of our local favorites this Friday. They will be playing alongside Tart, George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus and Those Hounds. Tickets to get into the show are only $8. Doors are at 7 p.m. and bands start around 9.

George Morris and Friends Do Disney!

This Halloween there are literally a million shows to go to, which is awesome. But, there is one show that is very different from all of the others.

George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus have put together a very Disney Halloween at The Loving Touch in Ferndale on October 25th. They have invited some local artists, including Jesse Shepherd-Bates, Ronny Tibbs, Yorg, and Jessica Wildman, to join them on stage while they perform a slew of Disney tunes. They have also recruited DJ Jezy to play some tunes throughout the night. They are encouraging everyone to come out as their favorite Disney character.

Doors for the show are at 9 p.m. and it is FREE to get in. For more details on the event, RSVP on Facebook here. I do not know about you, but I am a sucker for Disney! So, the real question is do I go as Cinderella or Cruella De Vil?

Fun Times at The Flint Family BBQ! (VIDEOS)

This past weekend Flint Eastwood took over The Crofoot and threw the perfect bash to crossover from Spring to Summer. The Flint Family BBQ featured 8 great bands on 2 stages along with food and games. This was the first year the band hosted the event, but we're  hoping this becomes an annual thing.

Throughout the day BBQ-ers were entertained by a slew of great Detroit area acts, including a few of our favorites like George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus and Blaire Alise & The Bombshells.
With two stages going, the music was non-stop. This was a great chance for us to check out some bands we've been hearing a buzz about and for Flint Eastwood fans to see what other great talent is out there. Although we didn't get to catch everyone on the bill, those that we did see all put on great sets, including Monument, Monument, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Rival Summers, and (of course) Flint Eastwood. It had only been about a month since we saw Flint Eastwood, but somehow they were even better than the last time around. The band's energy was contagious and the addition of the videos in the background made for an even more entertaining show than before.

We had the privilege to catch up with Jax from Flint Eastwood once again as well as with George Morris, but this time with most of The Gypsy Chorus. Check out those videos below to see what's new with them. We were also thrilled to finally chat with Blaire Alise about the band, what she has going on, and her new album For My Darlin'. Take a listen to what she had to say, then give the new album a listen by clicking here.

And last, but definitely far from least, we were able to catch a brand new song from Flint Eastwood's set. They brought all the guns out for this one with a video backdrop and an orchestra! We're thrilled that we captured it on camera and we hope you like what you hear. If so, the next time you can catch them live is at the MO POP Festival at Freedom Hill on July 12th. You can get more details on that here.

Props to Flint Eastwood for putting together such a huge event and for throwing such an awesome party!

Fools Fest @The Loving Touch

Back in the day Christie and I used to book a few shows a year, but we always had a little twist to get people in the door. We had a few friends that were into designing some crazy clothes and we asked them to have models walk in those clothes in-between the bands that we had booked. We called these shows “Fashion Fests” and got a great response. What guy doesn't like looking at hot women strut around while the band is loading on and off stage? What lady doesn't like to check out fashion while out at a show, especially if they could purchase some of those wears after? It was a perfect fit, to say the least. We weren't the first ones to come up with the idea, but we found a way to really make it work.

I was excited to see that someone else has picked this up and is making it work at The Loving Touch this weekend. Detroit Motor Apparel is debuting their new line and calling the event “Fools Fest” on Saturday night. Music will be played by Laura Finlay, Dalinian, Le Voyage, YUM, She Bears, Silent Lions, and George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus. Detroit Motor Apparel will also be releasing their spring line that night.

The doors open at 8 p.m. and the bands start at 9. Make sure to get there early because the first 50 people through the door get a free shirt courtesy of Detroit Motor Apparel and the first 200 get a DMA beer cozy. The Loving Touch is located at 22634 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale. $5 gets you in the door and 21 and over are welcome. To learn more about Detroit Motor Apparel visit there website here.

Find Out Why Jason Stollsteimer from The Hounds Below Can't Wait to Come Home!

This Saturday, March 1st The Hounds Below are returning to Michigan to bust out their instruments and play at The Loving Touch. They have been touring across America for a little over a month and it's time to welcome them back.

We all know that coming back to the mid-west can be both positive and negative. There are so many things I love and hate about the Mitten State and leaving for a while always magnifies those feelings. I asked Jason Stollsteimer from the Hounds Below to tell me the five things he missed most while on tour and the five things that he's not looking forward to coming back to. His witty answers reminded us how happy we are to have him home.

Come out to the show this Saturday and say "hello". George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus will be opening the show. Doors are at 8 p.m. and it's only $8 to get in.

Jason Stollsteimer -  The Hounds Below
5 things I miss about Michigan while on tour:
1. The snow
2. My friends and family
3. My weekly rotation of Ferndale restaurants (Anita's Kitchen, The Emory, Imperial and Mae's)
4. All the great Michigan bands
5. Thursday night Scrummage Karaoke at the New Dodge

5 things I miss about tour when in Michigan

1. Not having snow in December/January/February/March/ETC (I'm confused about what I like)
2. Driving across the US/Canada with my brothers in arms (Adam Michael Lee Padden + Will A. Shattuck)
3. In-N-Out Burger
4. Hanging out with all the people we meet on the road
5. The constant adventure of living on the road

Black Friday with Blaring Division at Hatchy's

This past Friday night after I got my fill of stellar deals and shopping, I headed over to Downtown Utica to get my fill of beer and good tunes. I've lived in the Sterling Heights/Utica area my entire life, but I've never really made a habit of going out in Utica. On the rare occasions that I did go out down there, it was usually just to The Shamrock for some incredibly delicious fried food and a beer. Other than that, not really my place. If you aren't familiar with Downtown Utica, it's about 4 blocks long with about 7 bars, a library, a couple random shops, and a sweet lazer tag joint. One of the handful of bars is Hatchy's.

Prior to Friday night I had never been to Hatchy's. I always just had it in my mind as a random sports bar that was probably full of douchey guys, most of which I went to high school with. Recently I started seeing flyers and Facebook invites pop up for shows there though, which I thought was super odd, but definitely peaked my interest. Well, on Friday there was a lineup there that I couldn't pass up, especially since it was so close to home.

The night started off with The ILL Itches, whom I arrived just in time to see. I may have a slight obsession with this band and I'm pretty sure all of the guys in the band are super creeped out that I pop up at 95% of their shows. But, it's for good reason. They're great. Regardless of what type of music you are generally into, you will like this band. If you haven't seen them yet, they have a few shows coming up, but you'll definitely catch them when you come to our two year bash.

Next up was The Jet Rodriguez. I have to admit, I think every time I have seen this band has been because I am there for someone else on the bill. That has to change. Great band. A little more mellow than I am typically into, but super talented. And the drummer sings on some of their songs. That's always fun and impressive.

Third to hit the stage was George Morris & The Gyspy Chorus. I just have to say, this band has really grown over the past couple of months into a cohesive unit. When George first added a full band, I was unsure about it. But, now it's hard to picture it just being him. Great band, great songs, and Helena is always fun to watch. Gotta love when girls can rock out with the boys!

The headliner on this show was Almost Free. One thought kept running through my mind throughout their set; Why the fuck don't I go see this band more often??? They are one of the most talented and underrated bands in the Detroit Scene right now. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO CHECK THEM OUT! They have two albums available as free downloads on their bandcamp and their latest, The Mirror Stage, is available for under $4. Well worth it.

So, needless to say, this was a solid show. Huge shout out to Blaring Division on a great night and for venturing out of the box and trying out this new venue. Just to fill you in a bit on Hatchy's, it's a 2 level bar with the music venue on the 2nd level. It was a beautiful room with brick walls and great exposed wood beams. I kind of felt like I was at a ski lodge of some sort by the looks of it. Plenty of spots to sit and see the band, but plenty of standing room too if that's your thing. It kind of felt like a cross between Foran's Grand Trunk and The Pike Room. Super comfortable, clean, nice, and just all around a cool place. Plus they had a pretty decent beer selection and PBRs were only $2, like they should be. It's right off M-59 and Van Dyke, so it's not too difficult to get to if you are coming from Detroit or Ferndale. Definitely keep an eye on Hatchy's Facebook page to find out when they have another show coming up and go check it out for yourself. Better yet, if you're in a band, think about booking your next show here!

Win Tickets to Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas' First Annual Thanksgiving Show!!!

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas have spent the year traveling around the U.S. and making a name for themselves and they are coming home to celebrate this Thanksgiving. They have announced their First Annual Thanksgiving Show that will feature them playing alongside The Sights and George Morris & The Gypsy Chorus. Not only is this a great lineup, but it promises to be the first of many Thanksgiving shows to come. Don't be the person who wasn't there for the first one and miss out.

Jessica is a self proclaimed band geek who spent a few years writing and recording the DIY route before she was signed to major label with her band The Deltas this past year. We are anxiously awaiting the release of their first full length, but in the meantime we have been enjoying their live album recorded at The Magic Bag last year. You can check that out here.

This show is all ages and is only $10 dollars. That's $3.33 a band, which with a lineup like this, is more than a deal. This event will take place at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27th and we have three sets of tickets to giveaway to get some of our readers into the show for free. To enter, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com. We will choose three winners and email them a few days before the show. Tickets for this event can be purchased here.
