We Tried Outdoor Yoga at Port and It was Awesome

Working out is an interesting thing, it can be so intimidating, but it can also be addicting. I personally enjoy working out in a group setting because it pushes me to try harder, do better and learn new things. But for a lot of people, it can also be really scary to get hot and sweaty around a group of people that you do not know, especially if you are a beginner. For these reasons, I find myself sticking to routines and classes that I know I can handle which prevents me from learning new techniques and finding new ways to get fit. So, I decided that it was time to push myself to try something new.

I have always wanted to try a group yoga class so when I found out that Port in Ferndale was offering free donation based session on Saturday and Sunday mornings I decided that I was going to bring a mat and see what it was all about.

The classes are taught by Samantha Mee, a local woman who has quite a following. The routine was around an hour long and Sam did a great job at walking all of us through it. She explained everything that she wanted us to do and helped those of us that got confused along the way. She also made adjustments for people who needed things to be easier or harder. But, the best part about the whole thing was being outside in Ferndale on a sunny Sunday. It was fun to hear the birds, the cars, the people, and all of the sounds of the small Metro Detroit city and make mornings so special. I understand why people like to do yoga outdoors, it is a different experience and it is amazing. In fact, I went to the class angry and after one hour in the sun focusing on my breathing I left on the top of the world. I was nervous to try something new and after trying it, I definitely want to go back.

Port yoga takes place at 11 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday all summer long. It's free to attend with a $5 suggested donation for Sam for taking the time to practice with everyone. We highly suggest trying this class this summer, it is always good to get out there and do something different!
