Wakey Wakey for Some Eggs and Makey Detroit!

Over the last few years Detroit has established itself as a creative mecca. Thanks to places like the Red Bull House of Art and Library Street Collective we have had an influx of new artists moving to town to create. Sometimes one of the biggest obstacles for DIY artists and makers is the ability to get access to the tools that they need to create. That is where TechShop Detroit comes in.

TechShop Detroit describes itself as, "a vibrant, creative community that provides access to instruction, tools, software, and space." This includes CNC prototyping tools, industrial sewing equipment, textiles equipment, laser cutting equipment, electronics, welding machines and machine shop equipment.  The shop runs on a membership based system and once you join you are free to come and create anytime that you want.  To learn more about the shop you can visit their website here or you can come by and check it out in person this Saturday, May 6th at the second annual Wakey Wakey Eggs and Makey open house.

For the second year in a row the shop is inviting Detroiters to come eat, drink and learn more about the space. The open house will start at 10 a.m. and run through 2 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees will enjoy tours of the area's largest DIY workshop, a member project showcase, free brunch, games, demonstrations and more! Yeah you read that right, free brunch! This includes a pretty solid breakfast spread and bottomless mimosas! They will be doing free tours of the space every half hour and all ages are welcome to attend.  In fact this event is super kid friendly, so pack them up and bring them out!

  1. I've been a member since March 2012 (two months before the Grand Opening). I love the opportunity TechShop gives to creative folks, or those that want to become creative. I have a few of the same tools at home, but this place has tools that I would never dream of purchasing on my own, such as a water jet cutter, laser cutters and engravers, welders and even an auto lift! I used to change my vehicle's oil on my back in the driveway, but not for the past five years!
