Win Tickets to See Show Me The Body and Wolfeyes at City Club

Detroit's City Club aka The Leland was originally built in 1927. It was one of Detroit's first upscale hotels. It boasted over 800 rooms, 20 floors and it was one of the first places to have air conditioning. It became infamous in the '50s as the hangout of Jimmy Hoffa and his friends in the Purple Gang. Four people died when the building was being built and over 15 people have killed themselves within its walls, it is regarded as one of the city's most haunted buildings. The Leland now serves as an apartment building and the famous ballroom was turned into a venue/club in 1983. It is by far one of the coolest places to dance your goth heart out.

These days they rarely have events at the space, but this weekend they have a really solid lineup of City Club worthy acts coming to the stage. Show Me The Body, Wolf Eyes, Dreamcrusher and DJ Black Noi$e to the stage this Sunday, April 8th. Tickets to attend the show are $10 in advance and they can be purchased here. We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show. If you would like to enter to win a pair of tickets to this show please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #leland. We will draw one lucky person this weekend and they will get to hang out at this historic haunted club hearing some great tunes with a friend for free!

Echo Fest 2016 Takes Over the Magic Stick this Weekend

This Saturday night Echo Fest will once again bring together some of the best psych rock, experimental and stoner rock bands around. This time around the fest put on by Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor will be bigger and better than before. They're moving venues, making the newly re-opened Magic Stick their new home, and they have packed the lineup with some amazing acts. This year the bill includes Nik Turner's Hawkwind, Timmy's Organism3FT, Mountains and Rainbows, Outrageous Cherry, Holy Wave, Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor, HederslebenThe Deadly Vipers, Rogue Satellites, UUBBUURRUU, Heaven's Gateway Drugs, Nest Egg and Wolf Eyes. If that's not a stacked enough lineup for you, you can head out on Friday night for the pre-party at the Garden Bowl which will feature Dead Leaf Echo, Warhorses and Diagonal

Before the big show this weekend, we wanted to catch up with the guys in Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor. Check out what they had to say in this interview below and get the inside scoop on this year's Echo Fest.

HID- How did you guys come up with Echo Fest? Why did you decide to start putting on this annual event?
Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor- "The original idea around the first Echo Fest was to bring together a handful of like-minded bands in the city. There were not that many "like-minded" bands around at that time and we werent really collaborating with each other. Echo Fest was a great excuse to get all those bands together in one room. As Sisters started touring more we saw strong scenes with Austin sort of being the gathering point of psychedelic rock movement which all sort of started around Austin Psych Fest. We imagined Echo Fest to a be a gathering point for the beginning of a more organized scene in the Midwest. It has taken seven years but now we have bands traveling from as far as Germany, France, Montreal, Austin, and all over the Midwest to play Echo fest. Echo Fest isn't just a place to see great music it is also a place for bands to meet each other and setup future gigs."

HID- Tell us about the bands. How did you choose who was going to be on this year's lineup?SYSV- "Every year has been great but this is our strongest lineup to date. Got word that Nik Turner's Hawkwind was going to be touring so we sent him an offer and sort of built the festival lineup from there. The rest of this year's lineup is a mixture of Echo Fest Veterans and first timers. We really wanted to keep everything fresh while also reminding people what bands have stuck with us to make Echo Fest fun every year."

HID- Who are you looking forward to seeing the most at this year's fest?
SYSV- "Obviously, Nik Turner's Hawkwind, Wolfeyes, and Timmy's Organism are going to be great. I think people will be blown away by Nest Egg from Ashville NC. We toured together at the beginning of the year and they slayed every night. Plus they have never played in Detroit before so everyone is in for a treat."

HID- This year you guys are putting this show on at The Magic Stick. Why did you decide to move there from The Loving Touch?
SYSV- "Got word of the Magic Stick re-opening and the timing was perfect. The loving touch has been great but we were looking to expand and the Magic Stick presented us with the perfect opportunity. We were really struggling with how to grow the festival while keeping it at the Loving Touch considering we were already pushing their available capacity. We just wouldn't have been able to keep the festival cheap if we kept it at the Loving Touch. The Magic Stick has been awesome to work with and have bent over backward to ensure that it will be a fantastic night."

HID- You mentioned that this show will feature fuzzed out guitars and "so much delay that time travel might just be possible". Do you think time travel actually is possible? Have you ever traveled through time?
SYSV- "Time travel is possible, even in the science fiction sense of the word. This is of course ignoring the rather pedantic discussion of aging that is the common snark given for such a question. It is very possible to speed up and slow down the forward movement of time with the manipulation of gravity. This concept is refereed to as Gravitational time dilation, which was originally predicted in Albert Einstein's theory of relativity.

Can we create so much sonic delay that we actually hinder or boost gravitational waves?"

HID- Last year you had a crazy 3D show that added to the whole experience. Will there be anything like that this year? Will attendees get any sort of souvenir this time around since they got 3D glasses last year?
SYSV- "Back to rock n roll. Wayne Woodward will be performing live projections and curating lighting for the evening. Armageddon Beach Party will setting up shop to sell their tripped out artwork along with live painting. It's going to be a really fun night, but our main goal was to put the focus on how damn good all these bands are."

HID- Alright, so here's your last chance to convince people. Give us 3 reasons everyone should head to Echo Fest this weekend!

15 incredible bands for 20 bucks
Nik Turner's Hawkwind
Fuck the government.

HID- Anything else you would like our readers to know?
SYSV- "Sisters have been working on a new record which we will start recording at the end of 2016. We will debuting a few new songs at Echo Fest this year. We are really excited and we honestly believe that this some of the best stuff we have ever written."

Tickets for Echo Fest are $20 in advance and can be purchased here. You can also pick tickets up in person at UHF in Royal Oak or at The Garden Bowl. Why not go to the FREE Pre-Party Friday night and pick your tickets up while you're there? Doors for Echo Fest are set to open at 5 p.m. on Saturday with bands starting at 6 p.m. For more info on this event and to stay in the loop the day of the show, make sure you give Echo Fest a like on Facebook here.

Third Man Records has sent three of their up and coming artists out on tour together in support of the label. It has also established Third Man Records as a true underground label.

Tickets for the showcase are $12 in advance, they can be purchased here. We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of Party Store Productions. Let's Build a DIY Skatepark Detroit

Last year we visited a pop up skate park outside the Brewster Projects and had a great time watching all the people take advantage of the free ramps and jumps that local skateboarding enthusiasts had put out for everyone to enjoy. It was fun to see kids come from all over and unite over the fact that they love to skate. Detroiters are essentially turning abandoned lots into the new, hip place to be.

The makers of that pop up skate park want to do it again, but this time they want to build something more permanent. They have thrown together a benefit this Friday, May 23 to raise some money to break ground on a new DIY skate park this summer. They are asking everyone to come out and spend a little cash at Third Street Bar in Detroit to get this thing going. The best part is that there is no cover to come out and meet the people behind the park. Instead of paying a cover, you can use your hard earned money to enter to win raffle prizes. The money that they raise from the raffle will go directly to buying the tools that they need to get started. They will also have Wolf Eyes, Blacker Magick, and Nicky Stix performing for your listening pleasure.

We reached out to one of the organizers, Derrick Dykas, and asked him to answer a few questions about the project. Check out what he had to say below and feel free to stop by this Friday to support a great cause. Skate or Die!
HID- How old were you when you started skateboarding?
Derrick Dykas- "I got my first skateboard from my dad on my 12th birthday in 1996. So, long enough to have irreversible damage to everything on my body. But, I think I've still got some good years ahead of me."
HID- Tell us about the benefit that you are having this weekend to build a skate park. How are you raising money and how much of the money will actually go to the skate park?
Derrick Dykas- "I can't wait for the benefit, I've already got six months of work into this project and we haven't even broke ground yet. But it's a free show with three great artists that I've grown up skating with. People might think it's weird that Nick (Nicky Stix) will be on stage rapping just before Wolf Eyes go on, but that's skateboarding. There is no mold, no formula, no rules. But we will have a ton of stuff we will be auctioning and raffling off. A little something for everyone whether you skate or not. So we decided to not include a door fee and just depend on donations, raffle tickets and t-shirt sales to bring in money that we will use on tools to build the park. I've got a $3,000 list of tools that we are going to need to get stuff done. Lack of proper tools is why the stuff we built last year at The Brewster Projects fell apart, we stretched materials too far and didn't have the proper materials. We shouldn't have to sacrifice quality because we are doing it ourselves."
HID- What motivated you to get behind this project?
Derrick Dykas- "This project should motivate anyone who takes pride in where they live and skate. It's got the potential to be one of the best DIY parks in the state, Midwest and country. As long as we can keep money coming in, we can build whatever we want and not have to worry about the city taking it from us."
HID- When will the skate park actually be up and running?
Derrick Dykas- "We hope to open the park on June 21st (National Go Skateboarding Day) with a huge party. I'm sure stuff will get skated once the cement cures, because I'd like to reward the volunteers that are there building, and not the people who just show up when we are done. Those guys are the worst."
HID- What kind of music do you like to listen to while you skate?
Derrick Dykas- "I don't usually listen to music when I skate. I understand why people do it, it's just not for me. I can't stand skating with headphones on and more often than not, I'm skating with my friends and want to enjoy their company."
HID- Anything else that you want our readers to know?
Derrick Dykas- "I just want to thank everyone in advance. I can't do this by myself and I'm extremely thankful for any help along the way. From Roula at Red Bull, Garrett and Kevin at Assemble, Sue at Park and Rec, and everyone who has helped us this far and in the future. I've got big ideas for this park and hopefully we can win everyone over with the finished product. Come check out the party, say "hi", check out some great bands, and have fun. This summer is going to be full of it. Hold on to your dicks."

The Third Street Bar is located at 4626 3rd Street in Detroit. Doors are at 8 p.m. and the party goes 'til 2.

BERSERKER Takes Over Ferndale

Over the last few years the festival seems to have become the new way to see music live, multiple stages are used to provide a non-stop music listening experience. In the past year, Metro-Detroit has been host to a lot of festivals including Movement, DIY, Pig & Whiskey, Orion, and many more. This week The WAB and The Loving Touch will open their doors to a new festival called Berserker.

Created by Shawn Knight from Child Bite, this event is meant to bring together a different crowd of music lovers. I had a chance to talk to Shawn in person about what motivated him to try his hand at booking a festival and he said that he felt there was something missing in the current music scene. There was no longer a festival that looked like The Michigan fests that he grew up attending and he wanted to change that. He wanted to book something that was a little more heavy and showed off a different side of the Detroit music scene. After putting in a lot of time and hours he has created a very solid lineup of some of the best louder, heavier, and crazier bands in Michigan and even some from out of town.

Berserker is being billed as “a bunch of fucked up punk/metal/noise-making weirdos taking over 3 suburban Detroit bars during the shittiest month of the year”. I have to say, this description turns me on and makes me think that we are all in for a good time. The stages will be located upstairs in the W.A.B., downstairs in the front room at the W.A.B. and next door at The Loving Touch. The festival will kick off on Wednesday, February 5th and all ages are welcome. The show will start at 7 p.m. each night and there will be a heated outdoor beer and merch tent. A four day pass for the event is somehow only $20, but a single day pass is $15. You're better off just getting the four day pass and going to more than one night, which you will want to do when you hear the line up. The schedule is as follows :

Wednesday, February 5th - Kickoff Night!
OLD GODS (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan)

***Free pints of PBR from 7 p.m. 'til 9 p.m.! (Weds. ONLY! Follow the instructions on Facebook here!)

Thursday, February 6th:
MACABRE (Chicago Death Metal Legends)

Friday, February 7th:
WOLF EYES (Ann Arbor Noise Wizards)

w/ TV Freaks (ON), Arbogast (IL), Bad People (NY) & Sperm (NY)

Saturday, February 8th:
RINGWORM (Cleveland Hardcore champions)

Tickets can be purchased in advance here or you can purchase them fee free at The WAB., UHF, Found Sound, and Stormy Records. We are really excited about this one and congratulate Shawn for coming up with such a cool idea to get us off our couches and out on the town during this shitty winter season.
