Win Tickets to See Flint Eastwood at The Fisher + An Interview with Michigander!

This week Flint Eastwood will be making history. For the release of her latest EP, Broke Royalty, Jax Anderson and friends will be taking over the lobby of The Fisher Building for the night. This DIY album release party will take place inside the beautiful 20 foot skyscraper that was designed by Albert Kahn and erected in 1928. It is one of the most regal spaces in Detroit, a space fit for a Queen.

A few weeks ago we had a chance to chat with Jax on our Podcast, if you missed that interview you can listen to it in full for free here. Jax went in depth about her musical journey thus far and praised a lot of the artists that she has worked with on the way. From Passalacqua to her latest collaboration with Tunde Olaniran, Jax has a impressive list of close friends that she is calling on to take the stage with her before she performs Broke Royalty for the first time in Detroit. Many of us are already familiar with Tunde and SYBLYNG from past release parties, but this is the first time that we have heard of Michigander, a Grand Rapids artist that is coming to Detroit to open the show.

We reached out to Michigander to learn more about the man behind the music before he takes the stage to open this monumental Detroit  show this Friday. Check out what he has to say and read below to find out how to win a pair of tickets to attend this one for free!

HID- First album that remember purchasing or receiving as a kid?
Jason Singer aka Michigander- "James Taylor's greatest hits on cassette."

HID- Top three guilty pleasure bands/artists?
Michigander- "I am not a Chainsmokers fan, at all, but that track they did with Coldplay has been on repeat. Katy Perry, but only the Teenage Dream album and probably Ellie Goulding. I think I've seen her live 2 or 3 times."

HID- The one thing you have to do or see in Grand Rapids?
Michigander- "Well deffo would suggest going to The Pyramid Scheme for a show. It's honestly one of the best venues in the Midwest. I'd also suggest getting coffee at LightFast or Ferris and Mac and Cheese from Electric Cheetah."

HID- First song you learned to play?
Michigander- "'Seven Nation Army' was the first song I remember actually taking the time to learn. I was a huge Jack White fan growing up since age 13."

HID- Who bought you your first instrument?
Michigander- "I actually found an Yamaha guitar in my dads closet when I was a kid. That's sort of how it all began."

HID- Favorite venue that you have ever played in to date and why?
Michigander- "We got to do a gig at Royal Oak Music Theater once and that was pretty surreal. I've seen so many of my favorite bands there over the years and to walk in the same places they did was swell."

HID- What are you most looking forward to about touring with Flint Eastwood?
Michigander- "I honestly am so excited to hang with Jax and her crew. They have always been so kind and gracious to me. It'll be so great to spend quality time with them all. I really look up to Jax, so it's seriously an honor to be able to tour together."

HID- Biggest reason someone needs to see you play live?
Michigander- "Because it's basically the only place you can hear more than a few of my songs."

If you would like to get to know Jason better, come out and see him and his band, Michigander open the Flint Eastwood Broke Royalty EP release party at The Fisher this Friday, April 14th. Tickets are $15 in advance and they can be purchased here. Tickets will be $18 the day of the show and they are sure to sell that place out at some point in the night. Don't Miss Hip In Detroit's New Podcast Featuring The Queen Herself, Jax Anderson

Over the last few months we have invited a variety of Detroit's movers and shakers into our studio at Podcast Detroit to chat with us about all of the hip things that are happening in and around the City of Detroit. Thanks to the generosity of our show's sponsor, M-1 Studios, we have had some interesting conversations with people who work behind the scenes and we have invited some of the city's biggest up and coming acts to chat with us before releasing their next album or playing their next show. This month we have the privilege of taking it to the next level because we have the honor of interviewing one of the city's most influential and inspiring artists right before the release of her new EP and a few weeks before what we anticipate to be one of the most talked about events of 2017.

Hip in Detroit has invited The Queen of Detroit, Miss Jax Anderson a.k.a. Flint Eastwood into the studio to talk to us about her latest EP Broke Royalty which is coming out on April 14th. That is the same night that she will headline at The Fischer in Detroit alongside Tunde Olaniran, SYBLYNG. and Michigander.

The first single off the new album is called "Queen". It was released a few weeks ago and you can check out the music video and the track here,  Her next single "Push" will be released this Thursday, March 23rd, so keep your eyes on social media and give it a listen before you tune in to hear us chat with the Queen herself this Sunday, March 26th at 6 p.m. We plan to go deep and find out everything we can about the new album and what we can expect at the big release show.

Mark your calendars for the live broadcast on Podcastdetroit.com at 6 p.m. this Sunday and head over to Fusion Shows website to guarantee your spot at the huge album release show on April 14th. Tickets are $15 in advance and I can't see any scenario where this one doesn't sell out. We can't wait to take you deep inside the mind of what we consider to be Detroit royalty.

Passalacqua Presents ‘The Baptism’ a short film created by The Right Brothers Featuring SYBLYNG & Hygienic Dress League

Passalacqua, The Right Brother, and Syblyng (a.k.a. Jax and Seth from Flint Eastwood) are three groups of people that have been blowing my mind lately. They are some of the most talented, creative, passionate, and hardworking people that I have ever met. They are reinventing how I think about music, art, community, and Detroit.

They released a new video this week for the song "Baptism" off of Passalaqua's upcoming album Church. The video was shot here in Detroit and features real live footage of the water protest that took place in the city on July 10th. The video is very powerful for so many reason. You have to see it for yourself to understand what I mean.

The punk rocker and activist in me almost cried when I finally watched the finished product. I don't want to comment on the video too much because I think that it is one of those pieces of art that we all need to interpret for ourselves. Kudos to everyone who worked on this project, you are the future of music, art, and Detroit.

If you liked what you saw, you should check out a few other videos that The Right Brothers put out this year, including "Get This Money" by my favorite artist James Linck and "Lights On Rider Anthem" featuring Doc Waffles, Eddie Logix, James and more. That song gets stuck in my head for days every time I hear it.

Passalacqua Takes Detroit to Church

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to a beautiful house in Hamtramck to preview a few tracks from Passalacqua’s upcoming album Church. This album is the combined work of Detroit hip-hop duo Passalacqua and the real life family duo SYBLYNG a.k.a. Seth and Jax Anderson (of Flint Eastwood). They have been collaborating on this album for over two years and wanted to have an official get together to discuss the music and answer any questions that attendees might have.

The listening party and subsequent album release party, which will take place this Saturday, July 26th, were the brainchild of Assemble Detroit, “a movement that organizes young people in Detroit to continually re-imagine the way the city could be rebuilt.” The party will be the first event held at Eight & Sand, home of The Detroit Bus Company. Opening for Passalacqua will be Tunde Olaniran and Open Mike Eagle. Dante Lasalle, Charles Trees, and Nothing Elegant will also perform.
The album is one of the best pieces of music that I have heard to date. The beats are enticing and the lyrics are thought provoking. It was an honor to hear Brent, Brian, Seth, and Jax talk about the process of writing and recording this album. It was also mind blowing to watch the preview of the first video that will be released for the song "Baptism". It was filmed by The Right Brothers and you can see the trailer for the video below.

Tickets for this event are available for $10 presale here. The warehouse is located at 3901 Christopher in Hamtramck. The party is officially called Revival. We promise, you're going to love this album, this lineup, and this event. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE DETROIT!
