SocraTea is the Best Place to Get a Cup of Tea in Metro Detroit

I love a hot drink. I love holding a hot drink in my hands on a cold day and I love the way it feels when the heat runs down my throat. I live for the first coffee of the day and lately I have found myself drinking decaffeinated tea in the evening just to get the same sensation. I am the kind of person that has to try every cafe in town and my drink of choice is usually some sort of coconut latte. But, those have some serious calories and I can't take the caffeine later in the day, so I have begun getting tea from different cafes to substitute the sensation. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a coffee house in Metro Detroit that makes tea that tastes any different then the stuff I could make with a cheap bag at my house. But, recently I realized that the reason that I wasn't finding what I was looking for was that I was looking in all the wrong places.

If you want a good drink you go to a bar, if you want a good meal you to a good chef, and if you want good tea you don't go to a cafe you go to a tea house. I recently discovered that there is a place in Detroit where you can find over 95 different healthy organic ethically sourced teas that don't taste anything like the shit that you can make with a bag. In fact, after a few sips at SocraTea my concept of what tea could be was completely redefined.

SocraTea is a small independently owned tea house located 5 minutes away from the Wayne State Campus and Cass Corridor that opened its doors in 2012. The space features over 95 different teas that come from all over the world. They have teas that are meant to be drank hot and others that are meant to be drank cold. They brew everything with the exact ratio of tea to water that is necessary to achieve the perfect taste and they make sure that it is the ideal temperature for you to enjoy your drink. They are unbelievably versed in all different types of teas including Black, Pu-Erh, Oolong, Green, White, Rooibos and Herbal. They also have a wide selection of sugars, and creams to add into your drink. This includes vegan options. They were able to talk to me about what I liked and give me a tea that I loved on the first try. I felt like it was the first time I tasted tea and I was more than pleased.
The tea house is open from 10-7 Monday through Saturday and  12-5 on Sundays. They also host pop-ups and feature lots of local artist work for purchase inside the space. They also host high teas for small groups and let a lot of local groups host weekly meetups within the space. You can follow them on social media here to learn more about their community events. I can't believe it took me so long to know that I knew nothing about tea, but now that I know, I am excited to explore more of the flavors that SocraTea has to offer the next time I need a warm fix and I can't handle another coffee.
