The Tricycle Collective Helps Families Buy Back Their Homes

In the immortal words of  Madonna, "music makes the people come together".  Music is also a great way to get people to come together for a cause. This Wednesday, September 30th The Tricycle Collective is bringing Mic Write, Britney Stoney, and Ryan Spencer from Jamaican Queens to the stage to help raise money for local families in need. This event will mark the end of an online campaign to raise money for 20 local families to buy back their homes.

25,000 properties will go up for auction and be sold to the highest bidder during the Wayne County Tax Foreclosure online auction. Many of the homes are occupied by families who will eventually be evicted form their homes. The Tricycle Collective is trying to raise awareness and let people know that it is easy to help these families keep their homes. Many of these houses will be sold for around $500. In fact, last year the collective raised around $5,000 in total and with that money they were able to help 10 families buy their homes back in full!!!

This year they are aiming higher. Their online campaign hopes to raise $20,000 and they are very close to reaching their goal. The party will help put them over the top because all proceeds from the night will go directly to families.

Britney and Mic Write will be performing solo sets and Ryan will be doing a DJ set. The event invite even teases that an unannounced international surprise star will also be making an appearance and performing during the event.

The event will take place at The Jam Handy in Detroit at 7 p.m. this Wednesday. They are asking for a $10-$20 donation at the door. The Jam Handy is located at 2900 E Grand Blvd. in Detroit.

See a Different Side of Tunde Olaniran at Art X Detroit

Tunde Olaniran is always up to something. He is always writing a new song, shooting a new video, or guesting on a new track. He is a hard worker and an intelligent man, as well as one of the most creative artists we've ever had the pleasure of watching perform. He is one of the few artists in Detroit that keeps us on our toes and never ceases to amaze us with what he is doing next. This time around, Tunde is dropping some hard core inspiration and activism on us.

Tunde can proudly add distinguished author to his resume because he recently had a short story published in a new book by Kresge Literary Fellow Adrienne Maree Brown called Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. This book is a collection of science-fiction stories from various authors, including science fiction writers like LeVar Burton and Tananarive Due and journalist and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. All of the short stories in the collection were written by "activist-writers who are actively involved in building movements for social change".
Co-editors Adrienne Maree Brown and Walidah Imarisha used this book "as a way to uncover the truths buried in the fantastical – and to inject a healthy dose of the fantastical into our search for truth".  We are intrigued and we are looking forward to reading it.

But, first we want to go to the Art X Detroit party to celebrate the book's release! This Saturday, April 18th The Garden Theater in Detroit will play host to a reception party and book signing from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. This event will feature a live reading, visual art, a performance by Mic Write, DJ's  Mike Medow and VJ Oren Goldenberg, and a performance by Tunde Olaniran himself. Tunde will perform live as well as conduct a  "sci-fi quintet" featuring harpist Ahya Simone. I'm sure that Tunde has a lot of surprises in store for this event.

The best part is that it is FREE to get in and ALL AGES are welcome to come out and explore the possibilities together. The Garden Theater is located at 3929 Woodward in Detroit.

Kopelli Album Release Party

This Tuesday, February 4th Lawrence ‘Kopelli’ Young will release his first solo project called Gentleman Jack at The Grasshopper Underground in Ferndale. You may recognize this name from his work with Cold Men Young, he was also the brains behind the first hip hop showcase at The New Dodge during last year's Metro Times Blowout. This latest project features production from The Olympicks, Jay Norm, and Doc Illingsworth, with guest performances from Ryan Spencer (Jamaican Queens), Mister (Passalacqua), Mic Phelps and Mic Write (Cold Men Young).

Microphone Phelps, Mic Write, Macs the Realest, and, our favorite, Passalacqua will also be performing on Tuesday night. The best part is that this entire night of fun and good music is FREE to you. Instead, they ask that you bring a canned good along to donate to R.A.W.S (Ravers Against World Starvation). It's just another way to give back and be thankful for all that we have. The Grasshopper Underground is located at 22757 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale.
