Lost River Celebrates Bowie Month with Bowie Themed Cocktails and Pierogi

On January 8th, the legendary David Bowie would have been 74 years old. Sadly, he passed away five years ago, as of January 10th. In honor of this iconic man, Lost River has declared the entire month of January Bowie Month. The tiki bar is celebrating by offering Bowie themed cocktails to-go all month long. The menu includes:

The Jean Genie
Cynar, Arak, Papas Pilar Blonde, Falernum, Fresh Squeezed Lime, Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit, Hibiscus Cinnamon Syrup

and

Space Oddity
Butterfly pea flower infused Caña Brava, Rum Fire, Fresh Squeezed Lime, Banana Simple Syrup, House Made Coconut Cream and Bitters

These cocktails are served in a sealed 6.8 oz. recyclable glass bottle and are $14 each.

If you want something tasty to eat along with those cocktails, they are also offering the "Life on Mushrooms Pierogi", featuring mushrooms, spinach, Bulgarian cheese, and potato. The pierogi come frozen along with instructions on how to cook them at home, because frozen pierogi wouldn't be very good. (At least we don't think they would be, but who knows?) The Life on Mushrooms Pierogi are available as part of a Bowie Month Pierogi + Cocktail Package, which includes a pierogi dinner and 2 cocktails of your choice. Other than the Bowie Month special cocktails, there are a lot of other cocktails and drinks to-go available, including some specials created by Shannon Mustipher. Check out the full menu here.

Lost River is located at 15421 Mack Ave. in Detroit. The bar is open for to-go orders on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Remember, the Bowie specials are only available during Bowie Month, a.k.a. January. So, don't wait! Place your order online by visiting LostRiverTiki.com

The Dr. Wants You to Eat Good Sushi

Sushi has always been one of my favorite foods, but ever since I went vegan, I have been underwhelmed by my options. It turns out that most sushi places only offer a few vegan rolls and they tend to be pretty basic. This means that despite being one of my favorites, I haven't enjoyed much sushi over the past two years and I was really starting to miss it. So, I ventured out to see if I could find someplace that would make me something that would make my mouth water the same way that salmon avocado used to, that's when I found the doctor.

Dr. Sushi is a local Detroit catering company that has been popping up at restaurants and bars all over the city for the last 6 years. Nick George, a.k.a. Dr. Sushi, began his journey as a prep chef in a sushi bar before venturing out to create the first sustainable sushi business in Metro Detroit. His approach is to source high-quality sustainable fish and locally grown seasonal fruits and vegetables to bring his customers the freshest and most eco-sustainable sushi that they have ever tasted. His cuisine also caters to vegetarian and vegan eaters by offering up lots of options that aren't on any other menu in town. This includes 2 of the best rolls I have ever eaten. One featured avocado, sweet potato, cucumber inari, and onion, and another that featured avocado with lemon habanero kosho. Each bite of sushi was PACKED with flavors that I have haven't tasted before. Dr. Sushi was by far the best sushi that I have ever had, vegan or otherwise.
There are three different ways that you can try Dr. Sushi for yourself. The first option is to attend one of his monthly pop-ups around town. The next one that he has scheduled will take place on July 12th at Lost River in Detroit. You can follow them here to stay up to date on their pop up events. The second way is to hire him to cater to your party or event. They can deliver some sushi trays, hangout and make them for your guests, or prepare an entire 5-course meal for your friends if you have the money and space. The final way that you can try their food is to attend one of their sushi classes. They have one at Brooklyn Street Local this Wednesday, July 10th and they run them all around town throughout the year. You can even reach out and book your own class for you and your friends if you want to learn together. You can find out more about Dr. Sushi's classes here.

Last Chance to See "Lost River"

It's no secret that Ryan Gosling was in Detroit a couple of years ago. People were reporting sightings of him throughout the city and every girl in the Metro Detroit area was hoping to bump into him. While he was in town he was busy creating his directorial debut, Lost River

Lost River
is a mysterious story of a dark underworld and a secret underwater world. The film itself has received mixed reviews, but some of the best movies of all time receive bad ratings from critics. Whether you like it or hate it, there is always something cool about seeing a film that was made in Detroit and spotting some of our landmarks throughout the movie. You can even spot a few, like the now demolished Brewster Projects, in the trailer.

Lost River is currently playing at Cinema Detroit, but time is running out if you would like to see this film in a theatre. This is the last week it will be playing there. Showtimes for the rest of the week are as follows:

Friday, May 8: 9:30
Saturday, May 9: 9:30
Sunday, May 10: 7:30
Monday, May 11: 7:15
Tuesday, May 12: 9:30
Wednesday, May 13: 9:30
Thursday, May 14: 7:15

Tickets to see Lost River at Cinema Detroit are only $9 and can be purchased online here. Cinema Detroit (previously the Burton Theatre and Cass City Cinema) is located at 3420 Cass Avenue in Midtown Detroit.
