The Ladies are Representing at GalStock this Saturday

In 1991, the world watched male representatives from the Republican and Democratic parties disrespect Anita Hill in such a disgusting and dehumanizing way that it inspired an unprecedented amount of women to run for office the following year. We saw the same phenomenon in 2018, after the election of President Donald Trump. Last year ushered in a new year for women, one in which 127 women hold seats in the United States Congress, 25 women hold seats in The Senate and 102 women in The House of Representatives. Women are making waves in the workplace and demanding fair treatment, fair payment and fair treatment in every aspect of their lives including the local music scene.

Detroit's music scene is one of the most female-dominated in the industry. We have amazing women like Virginia from Party Store Productions, Ramona from Black Iris Booking, and Melody at Small's booking a lot of the best local events and female artists/acts like Bevlove, Tart, Zilched, Sweat, The Lucid Furs, and many more tearing up stages across town. We have feminine power running through every aspect of our music scene, but we rarely recognize it. Something that GalStock is hoping to change.

GalStock is a new event coming to Detroit this Saturday, May 11th. The one night only party will feature live music made and played by women. There will pop up shops from a variety of female-owned companies and there will be visual and artistic performances from a variety of female identifying artists. The purpose of the night is to celebrate women and that is what the organizers are hoping to do. Supercoolwicked, Double Winter, Tiny Jag, White Bee, DJ StaceyJ, Yukiko, Milfie, Afe Marie, Problematic Black Hottie will all be performing at the event. Tickets to get into the party are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and 100 % of all proceeds from the night will be going to some seriously worthy charities. These charities include March of Dimes, Girls Rock Detroit, and Black Sheep Collective.

You can find out more about the first GalStock here and you can make your calendars for 8 p.m. this Saturday so that you can come out and celebrate all that is female at Tangent Gallery. This event was organized and planned by women to showcase women and raise money to support organizations that uplift women, there is no reason not to come out!

UFO Factory Re-Opens Its Doors This Weekend

This Friday night, UFO Factory will re-open its doors after being closed for over a year. In the summer of 2017, the nearby construction of the Elton Park apartments and mixed use building caused extreme damage to UFO and its foundation, so much so that the venue was forced to close its doors. Immediately, fans of the club rallied behind UFO and against the nearby developer, Soave Enterprises. Now, just over a year later, UFO is still standing, it's just surrounded on three sides by a new building. The important thing is, it's still standing and the doors will be open once again.

The venue is back and better than ever and they are ready to celebrate their re-opening this weekend. Looking at UFO's schedule, the party isn't stopping anytime soon either! They have great shows lined up for the foreseeable future. But, it all starts this Friday night, October 26th with PROTOMARTYR, Deadbeat Beat and Double Winter. Cover for this show is $15 and doors are set to open at 9 p.m.

Then, on Saturday night, its all about Motown and Soul at the NY Night Train Soul Clap and Dance Off with DJ Jonathan Toubin. This edition of the dance party is Halloween themed, so costumes are encouraged. Cover for the party is $15 and tickets can be purchased in advance here. There will be a $100 cash prize for the best dancer, so no matter what costume you decide to wear, make sure you have your dancing shoes on!

Sunday, karaoke will return to UFO Factory and so will Laika Dog! Laika Dog will start serving up their delicious dogs and tots beginning at Noon and their re-opening party runs until 10 p.m. As always, they will have meat and vegan options, you can get more info on the menu here. At 8 p.m. the karaoke starts too! So grab some dinner at Laika Dog, then stay and sing your heart out. For all of the details on karaoke, click here.

The rest of the week of full of a ton of fun events too! Monday night, Prude Boys, Jenny & Jackie, and Werewolf Jones will hit the stage. Tuesday night, the MC50 party moves to UFO after the recording session at Third Man, for the official after party. On Halloween, you can party the night away with Something Cold. Then, Craig Brown, John Salvage, and Eliza Godfrey help you head into the weekend on Thursday night. The party keeps going into next weekend and on and on forever. Check out all of the upcoming events at UFO Factory by visiting their Facebook page here.

So, make sure you make it out to UFO Factory as soon as you can for one of these great shows. But, don't worry, they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

Win Tickets to See Double Winter Open for Palms at Marble Bar

Its been recently brought to my attention that a lot of people don't realize how important opening acts are. Admittedly, I myself forgot how important and valuable they are so I made a promise to start getting my ass there early. Opening acts are bands on their way up. Opening bands are usually newer and have something different or interesting to offer. They are there to get the crowd going and if they are really good, they are there to gain some fans and become headlining acts themselves someday. If you really want to know whats happening in music, you go see the opening bands. A lot of times those bands might have even been chosen by the band that you are there to see, so there is a good chance you are going to dig them.

That's why we are encouraging you to head up to the PALM show at Marble Bar a little earlier to see Detroit's own Double Winter on Monday night. We recently saw them open for Handgrenades and they were really good. Tickets to attend the show are $12 in advance and $14 at the door, you can purchase them online here. Or, you can enter to win a pair of tickets to the show courtesy of Party Store Productions. If you would like to enter to win, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #gotothewholeshow. Then, make sure that if you win, you get up to Marble Bar early and enjoy the whole show to get more music for your money!
