Dying Laughing Takes an In Depth Look at What it Takes to Be A Comedian

On the surface, Dying Laughing is a documentary about what it means to be a comedian. Directors Lloyd Stanton and Paul Toogood interview a variety of well know comics, including Neil Brennan, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Hart, Jerry Lewis, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Silverman, and Jim Jefferies, to discover what it takes to make a room full of people laugh. The documentary explores what motivated each comic to get up on stage for the first time and what makes them keep coming back. It takes a look at the ups and downs of the business while showcasing what it's really liked to get heckled and booed off stage. It gives viewers an up close look at what it takes to become a "successful" touring comic. If you have ever dreamed about getting up on stage to tell some jokes this documentary is a must see.

But, this documentary also has a deeper level to it. By telling the story of what it takes to be a comedian they give you an interesting look at what it means to pursue your dreams. One of the hardest things to do is to move forward in the face of resistance, but comedians have to keep going, working on their show, and moving to the next town to make enough money to keep their dreams alive. So, instead of sulking on each failure that they experience, they wake up and push the reset button so that they can keep pursuing the next laugh. The film was inspiring because it reminded me that things don't always go as planned, but if you want to succeed you have to keep moving forward and working hard to get to where you want to be. I think it's important to be reminded that hard work doesn't always pay off, but that doesn't mean that you can give up, you just have to work harder. The road to success will be paved with setbacks, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take the journey.

By the time the film was over I was feeling motivated and creatively inspired. I didn't expect to get so much out of a documentary about comedy but by taking an in depth look at what it takes to make someone laugh, but I walked away feeling inspired to keep fighting no matter what setbacks might come my way.

The documentary premieres at Cinema Detroit tonight and runs through March 2nd. You can get tickets to get a dose of inspiration and a few laughs by visiting Detroit Cinema's website here.

Katoi is Down But Not Out

Friday morning we all woke up to the heart breaking news that Katoi had been burned down overnight. The Thai inspired gem opened less than a year ago and quickly became one of the hippest spots in the city. In fact, the restaurant was named Best New Restaurant by The Detroit Free Press  just about a week ago. Police and investigators believe that someone broke into the space and stole cash and alcohol before starting the fire and fleeing the scene. They noted that their was also a similar break in down the street at Nemo's Bar a few hours earlier that night.
The owners of Katoi have already made it clear that the restaurant will be coming back and there are rumors that they will hold some pop ups around town in the interim. Local businesses have also come together to help find employment for the 25+ people who are temporarily out of work. Motor City Wine  hosted a variety of DJs and held an event to collect money last Saturday and a Go Fund Me page has been started for the owners and staff. Lots of Detroiters are also showing their support for the space by leaving five star reviews on the restaurant's Facebook.

Our hearts go out to the owners and staff of what quickly became one of our favorite spaces. We hope that it won't be too long before we are visiting and enjoying all the cool things that Chef Brad cooks up. We look forward to sharing a meal together someday soon and we hope that in the meantime Detroiters can all come together to donate a few bucks to make these hard times a little bit easier!

We're Obsessed with Leather Goods Made by Detroit Based Brand Anthony Neil

This past holiday season I went out of my way to shop local and shop small. Meaning, unless somebody on my list wanted something specific, I kept it real and bought most of my gifts from The Detroit Urban Craft Fair, Etsy, and cool local shops throughout Metro Detroit. I hit up a lot of bazaars and holiday parties and found cool one of a kind things for most of the people on my list. It is sort of magical when you can find unique interesting things from small vendors that will make someone happy because you feel a lot better about the purchase and can be pretty sure that you are not going to ever buy a repeat gift!

This year, during my yearly visit to Brightly Twisted for their insane holiday party, I discovered a new local designer named C'erra E. who owned a leather company called Anthony Neil. She had set up a table for the event and had a variety of clutch purses and other small leather goods for sale at the show. All of her stuff was amazing, unique and very well made so I spent half of the night talking her ear off. C'erra E. hand cuts all her products and hand stitches them in her Detroit studio. She sources really cool fabrics and create one of a kind pieces of wearable art.  She is full of passion and her work ethic and passion comes across in her designs. After the party I reached out to the designer to learn more about her brand. If you into fine leather goods, consider shopping local with Anthony Neil!

HID- Why did you name your company Anthony Neil?
C'erra E.- "The brand is name after my father, Neil Anthony, who raised me in our Detroit home. My father is known to be a loving, giving, fun man and a music lover."

HID- Why did you decide to use leather to make your products?
C'erra E.- "Anthony Neil started off as a beauty brand, wanting to make cosmetic bags out of leather so the corners wouldn't tear up so easily like most do."

HID- How did you learn how to work with leather in the first place?
C'erra E.- "I am a self taught leather crafter. I learned by reading, YouTube, I took a few workshops and have been perfecting my craft daily.

HID- What made you decide to design purses and accessories?
C'erra E.- "Designing handbags and accessories was not the initial goal, cosmetic bags were and what has evolve is what we have now. My initial thought was to find a way to get the brand known and that started off with the leather balloon tassel and then I developed the Melinda essentials clutch and continued to build from there."

HID- Where can people see and buy your handmade goods?
C'erra E.- "Our new lovers can purchase leather at Anthonyneil.com, in Detroit Is The New Black and also Viola Boutique.

HID- How do you describe your personal style?
C'erra E.- "My personal style is edgy chic. I love white tee shirts, skirts, dresses with pattern and color."

HID- Why did you choose to launch your business in the City of Detroit?
C'erra E.- "I am from Detroit and was born and raised in Detroit and wanted to create a brand true to what the city has always been, so I launched it in its birthplace."

HID- What designers inspire you?
C'erra E.- "I am inspired by Rebecca Minkoff, Kenzo, Hermes, Etro."

HID- Are their any other Detroit designers or artist that you love? Wanna share them with us?
C'erra E.- "I love the artwork of Rosco Spears, Phil of The Smile Brand, Chris of The Dirt Label, jewelry designer Valentina of Vajze."

HID- Do you think you’ll eventually expand into other products?
C'erra E.- "I will expand the brand. Anthony Neil is a lifestyle leather brand, so there is surely more to come."

HID- Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?
C'erra E.- "Anthony Neil was created for the Edgy, Sexy, Bold & always Inviting. The person who bets on themselves and know they are sure to win, thats who we are for. Anthony Neil celebrates The Power of You."

Stand Up For Planned Parenthood in Detroit this Saturday!

It has been just over two weeks since Donald Trump was sworn into office as President of the United Stated of America, but a lot has happened in those two weeks. Those of us that disagree with Mr. Trump have been consistently disappointed as he has attacked the things that we hold closest to our hearts. From the failed strike in Yemen to the promise of building a wall, he has shown us that we are going to have to fight him tooth and nail to keep the things that we hold most dear.

Personally, a women's right to choose what happens to her body is one of the most important issues that is under attack today. I believe that if women don't have the right to control how and when they have children, they are not really free and they are not really equal, Furthermore, access to reproductive education and contraceptives is vital to a women's life and we need to do everything we can to give everyone access to making the best choices for their families. Donald Trump and his administration have made it clear that they are going to focus on taking away as many of those rights as possible and, to put it simple, we won't put up with this bullshit. The right to choose is non-negotiable. It is a constitutional right and we won't let it be attacked like this.

That being said, the right is planning to hold a protest against Planned Parenthood this Saturday, February 11th. In response to the anti-choice protest, pro-choice supporters are planning to gather to show our support for Planned Parenthood. In case you're not familiar with PP and what they do you can learn more here. They provide vital reproductive services in places where people do not have the access to the care that they deserve. I personally used them for years when I wasn't able too afford healthcare and I donate to them every month because of it. Pro-choice supporters will be meeting at 4229 Cass Ave. at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday. Signs in support of Planned Parenthood and pink clothing to show your solidarity are encouraged. For more information and updates on the peaceful counter protest, follow the event on Facebook here.

Win Tickets to Dita Von Teese's "The Art of the Teese"

This week The Fillmore is bringing something different to the stage. Instead of having a band play or hosting an awards show they are bringing the queen of burlesque, Miss Dita Von Teese to the stage to perform her one of a kind show this Thursday evening.

Von Teese was actually born right here in Rochester Hills, Michigan. She started ballet training at a very young age and has a deep fascination with the films from The Golden Age of Hollywood.  She has been practicing corseting her whole life and boasts a 22 inch waist that can be tied down to around 16.5 inches. But, she is best known for making burlesque popular. Her art of dancing and entertaining is world renowned, and there is truly no one like her.
Her live act is called "The Art of The Teese". It is a full burlesque production that features Dita doing everything from dancing to getting really wet up in a cocktail glass. The show is almost sold out because Dita is a sight that must be seen. Tickets for this one range from $35 to $100. You can purchase them here, but you might want to hurry because this one is going to sell out! We also have one pair of tickets to give away to the show courtesy of the bad ass team at Live Nation Detroit. If you would like to enter to win tickets, please email your full name to hipindetroit@gmail.com with the subject line #teese. We will draw one lucky winner to attend the soon to be sold out show this Thursday morning!

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Wayne's World at Select Theaters this Week

This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most excellent movies of all time, Wayne's World. What started as a sketch on Saturday Night Live, later became a movie that has been quoted time and time again and gone down as one of the best comedies of all time. To celebrate the anniversary of this iconic film, select theatres are showing the movie for two days only. This Tuesday, February 7th and Wednesday, February 8th you can see Wayne and Garth on the big screen once again! In case you need to be reminded why you should head to theaters to see this movie, re-watch the trailer.

Can anyone listen to "Bohemian Rhapsody" without thinking of this movie? Less than 20 theaters in all of Michigan are showing Wayne's World in honor of its anniversary and most of those theaters only have one showtime. So we highly suggest that you purchase your tickets in advance! For a list of participating theatres, showtimes, and advance tickets click here. To see interviews and celebrate Wayne's World's 25th, head over to the official Facebook page here.

Head to Your Favorite Bar to Watch Detroiters and Have a FREE Beer

This Tuesday, February 7th a brand new show is premiering on Comedy Central that is all about two guys in Detroit. The show, appropriately titled Detroiters, stars Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson. Some other big names make appearances on the show too, like Detroit's own Keegan-Michael Key and Jason Sudeikis, who is also an Executive Producer of the show along with Lorne Michaels.

Detroiters tells the story of "Sam (Richardson) and Tim (Robinson), two local ad men who make low budget commercials in Detroit. But the two best friends, much like the city in which they live, aspire to achieve great things." Judging by the clips that have been released on the show's Facebook page, the pair aren't too bright and the show is reminiscent of the movie Dumb and Dumber, except these guys aren't quite as dumb as Harry & Lloyd. See what we mean in the trailer below.

Detroiters premieres tonight on Comedy Central at 10:30 p.m. Since the network is so excited about this show and the premiere, they are hosting premiere parties throughout the city. The best part of these parties; Comedy Central is picking up the tab! That's right, Comedy Central is buying you a free beer at some of the best bars around Detroit. The list of bars that are having premiere parties includes Anchor Bar, The Bronx, Bumbo's, Checker Bar, Donovan's, El Club, the Garden Bowl, Green Dot Stables, Harry's, Honest Johns, Jumbos, Kelly's Bar, Marble Bar, Nancy Whiskeys, Nemo's, Northern Lights, The Old Miami, The Painted Lady, PJ's Lager House, Punch Bowl Social, Queens Bar, The Baltimore, Old Shillelagh and Ye Old Tap Room. Free beers are available from 10-11 p.m. and everyone is entitled to one free beer.

So, if nothing else, this is a great reason to get out of the house on a Tuesday night! If that sounds a bit too ambitious for you, just stay on your couch and tune in at 10:30 p.m. Let's see what these two Detroiters are all about!
