Detroit Music Brings the Community Together to Celebrate the Life of One of Our Own

When you grow up going to shows every day of the week you form a bond with a bunch of strangers that don't necessarily live in the same area, go to the same schools or have the same background as you. You find the freaks that love music as much as you do and you bond over the fact that you would just generally rather be at a show. The musical community of Detroit is a close-knit group of people who look out for each other and support each other whenever they get the chance, even if sometimes that chance comes in the wake of a tragedy.

This week we were all shocked to learn that Michael Krygier who played with bands like Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas and Gold Crayon had passed away.  But,  we were proud when we learned that Ancient Language, Earth Engine, The Imaginatron and his former bandmates in Gold Crayon would come together to play a show in his honor this Saturday.

Ghost Light Bar in Hamtramck will be opening its doors at 8 p.m. this Saturday to celebrate the life of Michael the best way we know how. The bands are charging $5 at the door and 100% of the proceeds will be going to Michael's family to help with funeral costs.  More importantly, this will be a great chance for everyone who is affected by loss to be together and look out for each other.  We all need someone to lean on and there is no one like the friends you made at a show.

We would like to send our condolences to anyone who knew and loved Michael.  We are truly sorry for your loss.

Gold Crayon is another great band that you probably haven't had the chance to see in a while. They haven't really played much since last summer, but we can't blame them. We aren't big on going out in the cold either! They have been working on some new tunes, but in the meantime, we suggest that you head over and give some of their original releases a listen on bandcamp here

Last, but definitely not least is River Spirit. This is another band that you don't have a chance to see every night of the week! The trio was recently included on a Grand Circus mixtape, you can give that a listen here.

Earth Engine Releases Their Debut EP this Weekend at the New Dodge

A couple of weeks ago you may have seen Earth Engine perform some of their favorite Bowie songs at The Loving Touch along with a slew of other Detroit area bands. Well this weekend you can see Earth Engine perform their own songs at their debut EP release show at New Dodge Lounge.

The six piece band consists of Matt R. (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Tim Gregg (lead guitar), Aaron R. (bass and backing vocals), Tom Stanko (drums), Niklaus Landström (keyboards) and John Raleeh (trombone). The band describes their sound as drawing from, rock and progressive/ experimental rock, with shades of neo-rockabilly, jazz, and funk. To hear exactly what that means, listen to their new single "Joy Blue" below.

Check Out Two New Detroit Bands This Weekend at the Lager House!

Saturday night head down to Corktown to check out 2 new Detroit bands that everyone will be talking about very soon. The bands are Orange Atlas and Gold Crayon and they are playing at PJ's Lager House.

Orange Atlas is a five piece that describes themselves as "Urban Psychedlic". They have actually been around for a minute, but just started playing shows recently. They're in the process of recording a new album right now, but they have a bunch of tunes you can check out on Soundcloud here.

Gold Crayon is a new project featuring Gregory Beyer, Steve Lehane, Michael Krygier, Taylor Pierson and Steve Stetson. Although you might know some of these guys from other bands, this is the first show for this band. They don't have any tunes out yet, but they aren't wasting any time. They have already been busy in the studio recording. So be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook page to hear more from these guys.

Also on Saturday's show are Sarah Burton from Toronto and Frank Patrick James with his band. Admission is only $5 and doors open at 9 p.m. PJ's Lager House is located at 1254 Michigan Ave. in Detroit.
