Hip in Detroit's Picks for the Weekend: October 4-6

Friday, October 4th - Break Anchor @ The Parliament Room at Otus Supply: It has been over a year since Break Anchor has played a show. This Friday night, the beloved band will return to the stage at The Parliament Room at Otus Supply in Ferndale. Will it be for one night only? We sure hope not! Break Anchor will be joined by S.N.A.F.U., Pancho Villa's Skull and Take Weight. Cover is $12 and 18+ are welcome. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. 

Saturday, October 5th - Detroit Dogventures: The shelter at Detroit Animal Care and Control reaches capacity monthly. There are always over a hundred dogs in their care, either at their facilities or in foster homes. And, although Michigan is considered a no-kill state because of the low euthanasia rates across the state, that doesn't mean that all shelters are no-kill (hopefully, you get our drift). If you can't adopt a pet at this time, you can still help the DACC by fostering, doing a sleepover with a dog, or by taking a dog out during Detroit Dogventures. This Saturday, head to DACC and the Friends of DACC will set you up with a dog to take out on the town for the day. The Friends have paired with Detroit area businesses to set up dog-friendly locations to take the dogs on field trips for the day. Make the day for one of these dogs, and hopefully someone you cross paths with will go adopt him or her after seeing them out and about! The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the DACC building is located on the I-75 service drive at 7401 Chrysler Drive (in the old Michigan Humane Society Building). 

Saturday, October 5th - Nightmare @ The Senate: This Saturday, watch two nightmarish movies at the Senate Theater for Nightmare at The Senate. At 4 p.m., watch the classic Tim Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Then, at night things get a bit scarier with A Nightmare on Elm Street at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for each show and can be purchased here. 

Saturday, October 5th - Devious Ones Record Release & 100th Show @ Outer Limits Lounge: Saturday night, Devious Ones will be celebrating the release of their new 45 and it just so happens to be their 100th show too! The band will be performing at Outer Limits Lounge in Hamtramck along with Indonesian Junk and Toeheads. Cover is only $8, doors open at 8 p.m. and 21+ are welcome. Give the new tunes a listen here.

Sunday, October 6th - Face to Face and Lagwagon @ St. Andrew's Hall: Wrap up your weekend with a great show, when Face to Face and Lagwagon hit the stage at St. Andrew's Hall. The two bands just kicked off their tour together last week. They will also be joined by MakeWar. Tickets are $29.50 and can be purchased in advance here. Doors are set to open at 6:30 p.m. and all ages are welcome.

Win Tickets to See Face to Face at El Club

Face to Face is about to hit the road for a summer tour and they are kicking things off right here in Detroit on Wednesday, May 16th. They will be hitting the stage at El Club along with Detroit's own Young Hunger and Rawdogs. This is sure to be a kick ass night of music that you don't want to miss!


For about two decades now, Face to Face has been releasing music and rocking out for their fans. They got their start back in the '90s with their first album Don't Turn Around being released in 1992. Probably their most popular release though, was their third album which was self-titled. It included songs that fans love, like "Walk the Walk" and "Ordinary". The band took a short break in the mid 2000's, but have been back at it and going strong since 2008. They always put on an awesome show, so make sure you don't miss them when they come to town this week!

Win FREE Tickets to See Face to Face This Wednesday

When I was 15 my Dad bribed me into getting better grades at school by promising to take me to see No Doubt in concert at the end of the year. This was right after Tragic Kingdom was released and No Doubt was at the height of their success. They played a huge sold out show at the Palace with the most legendary lineup of openers that I can remember. The show was with Rocket From the Crypt, Face to Face, Weezer and No Doubt. It’s rare to see a huge show like this with such a solid lineup.
All four bands found their own success and have continued making music and touring. Since this first encounter I have seen every one of these acts preform again, except for Face to Face. I have never been able to catch them and watch them play, but I have over-listened to their 1996 self-titled album for the last 15 years in anticipation of seeing them again one day. I feared after their split in 2004 that I may never get my second chance to see them, but thankfully the girls at Black Iris Booking are always on top of their game and are finally bringing these gentlemen back to Detroit this Wednesday, June 19.

Face to Face will be headlining at the Magic Stick along with Teenage Bottlerocket, Blacklist Royals and Joshua Black Wilkins. This show is $20 in advance and $23 at the door. I personally believe that this show is worth every penny, but thanks to Black Iris booking we are able to give two people a chance to bring a friend and see the show for free.
