Tonight and tomorrow night there are two more excuses for you to head to Small's dressed like a goblin or a ghost. But, even if you're not in the mood to dress up, these are a couple shows you don't want to miss.
Tonight at Small's check out The Independents with The Gutter Ghouls, Break Anchor, and Cbj. The Independents are a Horror Punk Ska band that is sure to get you in the mood for Halloween. They have been around since 1992 and shared the stage with bands like Ramones, Cheap Trick, and Misfits. They're currently finishing up a tour that has taken them across the country and back again over the last year. This show is only $10 to get into if you wear a costume or $12 if you don't. For those of you that wear a costume, there will be a costume contest with a $50 gift certificate to Hardline Tattoo Co. as the Grand Prize.
Friday night, if you aren't going to Creepy Cheapy, you HAVE to make it out to see Queens of the Static Age. This Misfits cover band used to be a Halloween ritual, but they have taken a break for a few years. Featuring members of Fordirelifesake, The Suicide Machines, The A-Gang, and more, this band will make you feel like you are seeing the Misfits themselves, but they may be even a little better. Joining them for the night are Can I Say (Dagnasty), also featuring members of The Suicide Machines, The Grande Nationals, and Left In Ruin amongst others, and Rawdogs, who show up dressed to impress and ready to rock out at every show, not just at Halloween. It's only $5 to get in the door and there's not a discount for wearing a costume, but why not? It's Halloween bitches!

Coming up on Saturday, September 28th there is a festival that is so awesome that we had to tell you about it a little earlier than we normally would. Keep It A Threat 5 is an all day skating and music festival held at Transitions Ramp Park. This event that is in its fifth year (hence the 5) is put on by two great guys, Dougie and Jae. They decided to start this event because, at the time of it's fruition, there were no other fests of this kind in the area and not really any fests at all for that matter.
We met up with Dougie and Jae for a few drinks and to chat about KIAT. Check out what they had to say and we hope you enjoy the soundtrack provided by the fine folks at the Garden Bowl.
Who doesn't love Rockabilly music? You might not listen to it all the time, but I don't know anyone that's ears don't perk up when they hear a twangy guitar, especially if they see a stand up bass along side it on stage.
This Thursday, September 12th, there is an amazing Rockabilly show at Small's. Black Iris Booking and the Detroit Psychobilly Alliance are bringing in The Chop Tops from California. Joining them on the bill are locals The Gutter Ghouls, Cash O'Riley & The Downright Daddies, and The Flat Heads. Actually none of these bands consider themselves just Rockabilly. The Chop Tops classify themselves as "Revved-Up Rockabilly", while The Gutter Ghouls are Psychobilly, The Flat Heads are Punkabilly, and Cash O'Riley & The Downright Daddies, well they're the only ones that call themselves Rockabilly. So maybe they are all slightly different, but all the "billys" fall into the same category in my book and they're all awesome.
Tickets to this great show are only $12 and all ages are welcome. Lucky for you, we are giving away 2 pairs of tickets! To enter to win, just email us at hipindetroit@gmail.com with "The Chop Tops" in the subject line and your first and last name in the body of the email. If you want a second shot at entering, post about this show on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Make sure to tag us though so we can see it! We will be drawing our two lucky winners on Thursday morning.
This is going to be a super fun show, and ladies, we're sure there will be quite a few studs with pompadours there too. Well, at least we hope there will be! We're also sure you're going to love The Gutter Ghouls, so make sure you get there early to catch them. And plan on getting a little wet during their set... don't worry you'll see what we mean!
This Saturday all of the bands you want to see, that aren't playing at Bled Fest, are playing under one roof at P.A.N. Shop. And, lucky for you, P.A.N. Shop is much closer to home and doesn't give a shit if you bring beer in. Saturday's lineup includes The Hangdowns, SUB, Worship This (OH), Worlds Scariest Police Chases (PA), The Gutter Ghouls and Snakewing. Quite the diverse mix of bands, made up of some of the best guys in town!
P.A.N. Shop is always a good time, but we have a feeling that this show is going to be extra crazy. Last time we caught Worlds Scariest Police Chases was down the street at Toepfer House. They actually took part in a PBR Chugging Contest that we put on that night. Now they posted on Facebook that they are "sponsored by PBR"... we're just going to go ahead and pretend we had something to do with that. You can check out the video from that fun night below.
Those guys have also been playing some shows with Anti Flag lately, so maybe this will end up being the un-official official Bled Fest after party...
On top of these out-of-towners, we're sure Snakewing will be amazing, as always and The Gutter Ghouls will be super entertaining. Plus, since we caught S.U.B. at the Blowout for the first time, we've been looking forward to seeing them again. We haven't checked out The Hangdowns or Worship This yet, but if they are included in this lineup, they must be good!
If you've never been to P.A.N. Shop before, it is located at 22641 Van Dyke in Warren. It can be hard to spot, so keep an eye out for the address on the west side of the road. Remember to park in back of the venue and BYOB. Also keep in mind that the guys that run P.A.N. are super cool and don't need to do what they do. So don't be a dick! They even keep the bathroom clean! What venue does that!?!? Thanks to the guys over at P.A.N. for doing what they do and putting on great shows.
Saturday's show starts at 8 p.m. and it's only $5 to get in. For all of the other details, head over to the Facebook event here. Get ready to party this Saturday everyone!!!
This weekend south Warren is the place to be! Tonight, the P.A.N. Shop in is having a kick-ass show. The lineup includes Break Anchor, Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Gutter Ghouls and The Flaks. And this show is actually the release party for Break Anchor's 7" that we have been eagerly anticipating.
Unsinkable Molly Brown is a punk rock band from Toledo. Jay told us that we should check them out, and he's right. You should probably listen to him, too. So far they have not disappointed, plus they have a girl singer for an added bonus. They are definitely a good fit to be playing with Break Anchor and the others.
The Gutter Ghouls and The Flaks are both local punk bands that have been making a name for themselves around here. So this should be an awesome party of a show!
If you've never been to P.A.N. shop, here is a perfect opportunity. It's located at 22641 Van Dyke in Warren and you can learn a bit more about it here in our interview with Jesse from the shop. The show tonight is $5, BYOB and doors are at 8 p.m.
When I hear "City Club" I automatically think of fishnets, pleather and goth girls dressed in next to nothing. I must admit, I have never actually been to the place. So stereotypes and word of mouth is all I have to go by. However, after Friday night, I will no longer be a City Club virgin. Rather than a night of industrial music and dancing though, I will be venturing to the Leland for an awesome show.
This Friday night Break Anchor will be playing at City Club with 6 other bands, including Poison Tongues, Dead Words, Aggro or Die, Live to Kill, Explicit Bombers and The Gutter Ghouls. This is the first show like this being held at City Club in over 10 years. It sounds like it's going to be a regular thing again though, if all goes well! We've even heard talks of Bill Bondsmen having their album release show there. Needless to say, we are always up for more venues and more shows! So we're really looking forward to Friday to see what this place is all about and what it's like as a venue!
For those of you that don't know, City Club is located in the Leland Hotel at 400 Bagley St. Doors will open at 8 p.m. on Friday. Since there are 7 bands playing, I'm guessing it will go pretty late. It's only $5 to get in, which is a steal for 7 great bands. So we hope to see you all down there on Friday night. It will be a new adventure and new venue for some and a walk down memory lane for others. Either way, it should be a blast!
