Celebrating Women in Hip Hop

Ever notice that it is a lot harder for a female artist to get recognition for her music if it isn't bubblegum pop? People seem to be taken aback when a woman can get on stage and play guitar or spit out a verse. Here in Detroit we have so much female talent that people have finally taken notice and begun to give these artists the respect that they deserve. There is a growing female hip hop community out there taking over stages and making people listen.

In 2009 The 5e Gallery started hosting weekly events that celebrated women in the arts. They have been meeting every Tuesday for 5 years and this Saturday they are hosting a party to celebrate where they have been and where they are going next. This event will feature a performance by Miz Korona, DSSense, Mahogany Jones, Insite the Riot, NiqLoveRhodes, Abstract Jazz, Keys Blake, Jaci Caprice and DJ Lynda Carter. They will also have a live painting & graffiti showcase featuring Nicole Carter, Riku, Nemiki, Help & Mary Pepper. The gallery will also be debuting their documentary film at this event. To top it all off, the night will feature the galleries first B-Girl Battle, the winner will receive a $500 cash prize.

This will be an evening to celebrate women in the arts and possibly win some money if you have the skills to do so. Tickets for the event are only $10 and can be purchased in advance here. The 5e Gallery is located at 4605 Cass Avenue in Detroit.
